I suppose it’s worth warning you from the get-go that this is as much an opportunity for me to rail just a little against the mediocre 2009 crime thriller The Lodger as anything. But with that said, I promise I’ll try to make it seem like there’s a point to the whole affair so that the rant is more than just thinly-veiled. Ideally, I’d like it to be veiled in, like, thick curtains of some …
I recently bought a new wireless router. The old one was dog-slow and really unreliable – a problem since I use my 360 for Netflix a lot. Or, rather, I would, had I been able to get a reasonable signal. Instead weeks would go by when Netflix wouldn’t work at all; the rest of the time it minimized the picture quality to just above intolerable. Through sheer laziness I’d put off the purchase for almost …
Joined by Jon Peters, Jonathan Sharp (with a little input from Chris Lye; someone’s got to control the situation!) sat down with Tap to chat about Guild Wars 2’s professions: their inception, strategy, and design choices; whilst also taking the time to answer a good handful of questions solicited from the Guild Wars 2 Guru community. Hit the jump to find out how we got on.
Star Wars: the Old Republic is just not working for me and besides Baldur’s Gate, I’ve never really found any Bioware games of interest. The latest trailer released demonstrates very sandy gameplay footage of Tatooine, where we follow a Sith sorcerer as he quests grumpily around the desert. The most striking thing for me is the horrendous HUD, a skill bar that’s jam packed (yet he only ever uses one lightning based skill) and a horrendous speeder that …
He doesn’t really need help, precisely, since he’s got five books out, two movies nearing production, a show on the Travel Channel, and a fluffy hairdo, but you should help him all the same.
June 9 has arrived, meaning my considerably more successful brother Marcus is celebrating the release of his fifth novel, The Two Deaths of Daniel Hayes. Go! Go buy it!
Then come back and read the series of amusing anecdotes below.
I don’t tend to talk about much other than MMOGs here in the Tap silo. I’m sure I drive you all mad; they’re my vice you see. Today though I’ll make an exception and discuss the latest Nintendo console. Briefly, I might add, considering I was more excited when having my tonsils removed than watching Nintendo’s announcement…
E3 is upon us and besides all the usual PR nonsense, nothing has really caught my eye so far (although, I must admit the new Tomb Raider has potential). The latest trailer of From Dust has surfaced and it’s absolutely stunning, but I wouldn’t go as far as to say it “Looks literally too amazing to exist,” like Destructoid have. Let’s get some perspective here; Emma Stone looks too amazing to exist, From Dust just looks …
Review by Brandon “Dix” Perdue L.A. Noire Developer Team Bondi & Rockstar Games Publisher Rockstar Games Released May 2011 Available for PS3 (version reviewed), Xbox 360 Time Played Finished all cases, including 3 DLC cases (20+ hours) Verdict: 4/5 Thumb Up One of the best detective games to date…but not quite the stuff dreams are made of.
Well, it’s been a long time in coming, folks, but here’s the latest installment of my “monthly” feature column for the IGDA.
I had a weird experience with this column. Beyond weird. One might even call it… surreal. And it’s still going on; still hasn’t been fully resolved. May not be. Despite a strong desire to explain I think it might be best to leave it at that; suffice to say that what you read below is not the original version of this column, and while I’m perfectly satisfied with what’s there, the whole “road not taken” dilemma does resonate. Anyway, it’s a story that’s probably only interesting to me, so consider yourselves lucky to not be regaled with it. Enjoy the piece!
Review scores don’t matter! So says Randy Pitchford, King of Gearbox and inheritor of 3D Realms’ sloppy seconds. With Duke Nukem Forever finally gold after fourteen years in development, the studio prez is on the PR trail for a little preliminary damage control. Not surprisingly for someone as unoriginal as Pitchford, his approach is… review scores don’t matter.
A great deal has been said about the final Guild Wars 2 class reveal. Undoubtedly the Mesmer, it is a class synonymous with Guild Wars and one of the most original within an MMOG…
Since the Rapture didn’t happen on May 21st as it was supposed to, a lot of people’s plans got messed up. The decision to tell your mother in law what you really thought of her turns out now to have been ill-advised. All those porn sites you signed up for, thinking you wouldn’t have to pay, are now on your credit statement. And of course all the repenting you got on with. Total waste. The …
Review by Lewis B Brink Developer Splash Damage Publisher Bethesda Released May 2011 Available for PC (version reviewed) Xbox 360 and PS3 Time Played “Finished” campaign mode and all challenges up to ***. Rank 15 (20+ hours). Verdict:5/5 Gold Star The finest team-shooter since Team Fortress 2. Need I say more?
Today is my birthday – thirty-six, if you must know – and my brother Marcus (whose fifth novel comes out on June 9, don’t forget!) loaded me down with a mountain of treasures, including CD Projekt’s latest, The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings. I own the original Witcher, on account of a Steam sale, but I never got more than ten minutes into it. Many a positive review of this sequel landed it on my …
Ah, it’s that time of year again. The sun is shining, the birds are singing and those long barmy summer nights fill with the sounds of laughter and the aroma of someone else’s barbecue. And for three days at the beginning of June, you’ll be able to hide away from all of it. Secluded from the dangers of pollen or killer bees, gamers around the world will find forums, blogs and live streams beaming the …
