While everyone out there was getting psyched about the Resident Evil 2 Remake, and Kingdom Hearts 3 finally on the horizon, I was still lingering over one bit of sad news happening in gaming this week. On January 30, 2019, the Wii Shop Channel will close down… Forever.
Personally I wasn’t really sold on much of what Nintendo had to show about the Wii U at E3. Granted, I wasn’t sold on the Wii at this point in its life cycle either, and I ended up quite liking it, mostly.
But as news continues to seep out to us about Nintendo’s next console, I’m starting to see some serious red flags about how Nintendo thinks this is going to work.
So it turns out Nintendo consoles are rather popular. I know, pretty wacky right? After all, almost 90 million Wii consoles have been sold around the world and despite a troubled debut year the 3DS has shifted more units within eight months than the DS did in twelve. But enough of those sales figures. Who are we, Nintendo shareholders? The real news is how many Miis are living on all those waggle and three dimensional consoles. …
Review by Amanda “AJ” Lange The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess Developer Nintendo Publisher Nintendo Released Nov 2006 Available for Nintendo Gamecube, Wii (version played) Time Played 55 hours Verdict: 4.5/5 Gold star! …a game I highly recommend for fantasy lovers. … However, it is not flawless.
Chalk this one up to another prediction Steerpike got wrong. Microsoft’s motion sensing Kinect hardware has moved a stunning eight million units in 60 days… far, far more than the company’s prediction (one that I at the time thought bombastic, absurd, and unbelievably out of touch) that it would move three million units by the end of 2010.
No shooting, maiming, or blowing things to bits. No beating anything to death with a shoehorn and arms will not be used for bludgeoning. Codemasters is releasing F1-2010 on 22-September for all the major platforms (PS3, XBox 360, PC, Wii, PSP, Mac) which is in itself notable coverage and must have taken forever to get working. While there have been mods for F1 in rFactor, this is the first major purely F1 branded product since …
How do you solve the problem of updating one of the most revered console franchises of all time and making it relevant for a whole new generation of consoles and gamers? Personally I’d suggest the best way would be to just not bother, avoiding desecrating the memory in the process, but Activision would clearly disagree. According to Eurogamer, Activision are all set to reveal GoldenEye at this years E3, which kicks off in Los Angeles …
Review by Lewis B Dead Space: Extraction Developer: Visceral Games Publisher: Electronic Arts Released: EU October 1st 2009 Available for: Nintendo Wii Time Played: Finished Verdict: 4/5 Thumbs Up A competent rail shooter, that thanks to Visceral Games’ strong IP, is arguably the best light-gun experience on the Wii . Although there are some issues and poor acting issues aside, the game is highly enjoyable. Unlike other rail shooters however, I must stress it isn’t …
I’m a hypocrite. I’ll freely admit it, and Gregg will merrily testify to it. However, I like to think of it as willing to change ones mind, as and when new evidence comes to light, so to speak. Still, contrary to my hatred for the Wii and its gimmick-gameplay(tm) I’ve actually started to like the little bugger. Now don’t get all giggly at the thought of me in a darkened room waving my magic wand …
SEGA’s complexly-named studio director Constantine Hantzopoulos indicated to GamaSutra and 1UP that the Wii rail shooter Dead Space: Extraction’s unbelievably poor sales since launch (fewer than 10,000 units in a month) served as a “litmus test” for whether or not SEGA – which has nothing to do with EA and had nothing to do with Dead Space: Extraction – would produce Mature-rated titles for the Nintendo Wii platform.
Given that the SEGA-published Madworld and House of the Dead: Overkill, also for the Wii platform, underperformed, and the fact that Dead Space: Extraction got its ass handed to it, Hantzopolous indicated that future Mature-rated titles for the Wii will not be forthcoming from SEGA.
This week’s Wii Virtual Console treat is the original Phantasy Star, first seen on the Sega Master System. It costs 500 “Wii Points,” but I’m not sure of the exchange rate on that. This is where it started, people, the console RPG that spawned a franchise and still claims devotees to this day. Phantasy Star is a dark and often disturbing tale of heroism, revenge, and power-mad governance with distinct overtones of Nazism, Big-Brotherism, Fascism, …
Shack and others are reporting on what may or may not be revered designer Warren Spector’s next effort, codenamed Epic Mickey. Since Spector’s Junction Point studio was acquired by Disney, everyone sort of assumed he’d be making a mouse-themed game (assumed, but hoped it wasn’t true), and now it’s semi-official. According to Shack, the game will be Wii-only, and tells the story of obsolete Disney characters seeking to destroy Mickey Mouse. I’m not sure about …
The second Mario Marathon is up and running right now, to benefit Penny Arcade’s Child’s Play Charity. Three crazy people will play through the seven core Super Mario Bros. games on Wii Virtual Console in one weekend, nonstop, with limited sleep. Hilarity will ensue. Donations will be made, to buy games, toys, books, and other goodies for the kids in children’s hospitals across the world. These kids suffer plenty, and anything that the gaming community …
Review by Meho Krljic NyxQuest: Kindred Spirits Developer Over the Top Publisher Over the Top Released 16 June, 2009 Available for Wii (WiiWare) Time Played Six hours (but I am really slow) Verdict: 4/5 Thumbs Up “Being the goddess of night sucks when you’re up against an angry Sun. But it makes for lovely platform gaming.”
Did I mention I’m a sucker for strategy games even though I lack the strategy gene? Unless clicking all around the menus adding buildings because they’re pretty is considered a strategy. Anyway, I spent most of this past weekend playing around with Related Designs’ demo of their newest entry in the Anno series – Anno 1404. (And because we’re an illiterate lot here in the U.S. and Ubisoft apparently felt sorry for us, you’ll find …
