Exact same thing for me with Vanquish. I played whatever part of the game the demo was from, decided it was technically very qualified, and it all handled rather sharply. But I still didn't feel interested to play it.

Do our brains only have so much room for "X" amount of new shooty games that don't have some major draw right up front (like the characters in The Last of Us)?

Random comment I have to make after going from TLoU to Uncharted 2: The Uncharted series kind of seems downright silly after the [___blank_____words________epic__mushrooms_______________horses_______things____etc.] of The Last of Us. Maybe I've spread out my play segments too much, but 8 chapters into Uncharted 2 and I don't really love it yet. But Drake's Fortune had me hooked in two chapters. It honestly probably is that I've spread out when I've played too far. But also: man, the amount you have to shoot people in Uncharted for them to die is beyond ridiculous. Something I also never fully realized until TLoU. This whole ludo-narrative thing too ... it becomes more and more in my face. Drake and Chloe jumped out of a building which was literally toppling over, smashing through the windows of an adjacent building, and immediately Drake chuckled and said how fun it was. Chloe scoffed, thankfully. He had just murdered at least 150 or more people in the last hour. And he jumped out of a falling building after a helicopter was shooting missiles at him and he laughed about it. Drake really is an asshole. Likable, but an asshole.

One more note, only peripherally game-related. The PS3 4.46 system software released this morning has a nice feature that people have probably wanted since trophies were introduced:

"You can now select whether to show a notification when you earn a trophy while playing a game. You can adjust the setting under [Settings] > [System Settings] > [Trophy Notifications]."

That's nice, for anyone who doesn't mind getting messages from friends but doesn't want trophies interrupting their game. A great feature for when you want to play, say, Shadow of the Colossus.

We're all of the same mind on Vanquish, especially the part about feeling kinda bad that we couldn't get into it. I bought the game used on Mat C's recommendation, and like you guys I couldn't find (serious) fault with it, yet it left me cold.

When it comes to Uncharted, something you gotta keep in the fore is that it's a comedy, and a specific kind of comedy at that. I started the series with Uncharted 2 (circling back to the first later), which I got as a gift, and when I first launched it I didn't know it was a comedy. In fact for some reason I'd thought it was a gritty serious adventure, which would have really been a bad idea. With Uncharted you must never look too closely at what's going on behind the curtain or else it gets quite disturbing, particularly Nathan Drake's body count. Seeing the violence as actually part of the joke, the same way it was in Armed and Dangerous, and Naughty Dog clearly being in on that joke, made it really enjoyable for me. If there'd been too many moments of gravity in Uncharted the whole thing would've come down around its own ears.

Meanwhile I just finished "Winter" in The Last of Us - I'm dragging my feet because I don't want it to end and it's clearly about to - and agree with xtal on its nuance and depth. There are certainly some things about its script that are quite... that don't work. I just gave myself a long lecture about it in the other room. But overall the subtlety and complexity that you see, and what you don't see, makes it a masterpiece of dramatic composition despite some pretty significant issues. I find myself thinking a lot about the scenes I'd have added or changed slightly if I were working on TLoU's script. Nothing too large, but a Steerpike version would've had some pivotal adjustments and more pivotal additions. Can't say whether they'd have made it better, but it's how I would have done it.

One thing Naughty Dog's writers did brilliantly was make it clear that Joel is not Nathan Drake. And they do it early, and quickly, and minimalistically, but with such force that it's never an issue. Had they failed in that challenge TLoU's impact would be diluted. That said I don't think Joel is as rich a character as he ought to have been. I can overlook it though, because the game has still made me experience emotions of such complexity you'd be forgiven for assuming I'd actually lived the story rather than watching it through an LCD TV.

My problem with Vanquish was that the demo was more enjoyable than the full game. The full game was just the same weapons, the same enemies, the same scenarios and the same boss over and over again. I mean, okay, there were a few sections that were different, like the dark tunnel crawl, the city rail platforms, the forest/park bits, and there were a few other bosses, but generally speaking it had very few other tricks up its sleeve. Hell, the demo boss you fight two or three times over the course of the game. Yaaawn. At first, I thought all the gruff voiceovers, 'tude, cigarette smoking, whiskey references and up-skirt shots were just silly and OTT and ironic in a macho-dudebro-Shootington-McChristmas sort of way but as I played more it dawned on me that perhaps it wasn't being ironic; perhaps this was it. By the end I had no real idea what was going on and all the drama began to grate, as did the gameplay. The demo didn't grate.

As for games I'm currently playing: Natural Selection 2 again, I've installed Sacrifice which I intend on starting soon as well as The Walking Dead. On my Nexus I've been playing Organ Trail which is fun having my friends and girlfriend as fellow survivors. Oh, I completed The Swapper as well which was brilliant. It makes me want to play Vessel again.

I could never get into Sacrifice. Sold it years ago :(

In other news, The Walking Dead: 400 Days is tantalizing but painfully short. I completed it in less than 90 minutes, so it wasn't even the length of one episode from the first season. Combined with each character's story being about 15 minutes long it actually feels shorter than it is. All the characters come together in the end for reasons yet to be explored. None of them cross paths directly, and only a couple do unbeknownst at the time. It ends with them being offered asylum in some unknown place; this will obviously be our introduction to the second season proper; I just hope dearly that they again create a story almost entirely outside of the comic and TV series - in other words, I really hope season two has nothing to do with Woodbury, since that place is awful, and Season 3 of the show was pretty much total rubbish.

In more other news, The Walking Dead: 400 Days was released today (on PSN, in North America only) with less than a day's warning and even less fanfare. It's not much, even for only $5, but I'm sure once season two is upon us this little origins story, so to speak, will feel a bit more justified. It's rolling out across other platforms and continents over the next ten days or so.

I finished Metro Last Light and evidently got the bad ending, though it looks like it would be very hard to get the good ending. I usually play a pretty good character, but not good enough this time. I was surprised at how hard it was to find filters to stay alive at the 3/4 mark. A while later they were all over the place and I ended the game with about 30. A good game that I would make a few changes to.

Pokey, if it's like Metro 2033, the good ending is nearly impossible to get. If I recall. 4A revealed that 3% of all players who finished 2033 got the good one, so don't judge your actions too harshly. Like you I was pretty good - I gave bullets to the poor, I found a bear for a kid, I avoided misbehavior, still got the bad one.

I just grabbed Tomb Raider on the Steam sale, so that should be my next project. I need to get back to a few other games too, particularly Deadly Premonition on the PS3.

I have started playing Reus, a fascinating and charming god game that's more puzzler than it looks. Not sure how I'll fare with it long term but so far it's quite a hypnotic and relaxing experience.

I've also been playing more Guns of Icarus Online which, dare I say it, I'm enjoying more than Natural Selection 2 these days (watch my Games of 2013 list!)

Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed I played on PS3 and really wasn't taken by it at all but I've been wanting a fun online multiplayer racer for a while now and with it being only £13 for a four pack during the Steam sale I decided to take the plunge. Mat C has been raving about it, and honestly, it's exceeded all my expectations. My girlfriend and I have been playing it split-screen locally but connected online with her brother and our friends in the US -- it's been an absolute riot!

I'm psyching myself up to finally install my solid-state drive. I hate formatting and migrating stuff over, it's always more hassle than you think, regardless of how much you prepare :-(

I've been playing XCOM: Enemy Unknown.  It's finally sunk its claws into me.  I played it a while at first, then put it down for several months.  I just wasn't feeling it.  The first one hooked me, hard, and quickly.  So many late nights with that one.  But the new one, while good, didn't seem to have the same...something.

But, I gave it another chance and I'm really liking it.  It's much more simplified of course.  Some of those decisions I like, others I don't.  I actually like the smaller maps.  They retain the requirements for good tactical planning, yet don't become tiresome.  They could perhaps be a bit bigger, but it's a minor gripe.  What I don't like are the fact that you can never, ever, get the drop on enemies.  That's probably my biggest gripe actually.

I don't really miss having to, for instance, keep a good supply of interceptor missiles.  The strategic decisions are sufficient that I don't miss those lower-level management duties.  I do wish I could sell off extra gear: that is the things my engineers make that I don't need anymore.  In that sense the economy is too simplified.  Of course, in the original, you could turn a nice profit on manufacturing.  That is completely gone.  Maybe they'll improve on that the next time around.  There's bound to be a "next time around" right?

So, what was it that finally clicked?  I started getting that loot, research, build loop going that's what.  That and I successfully completed some missions I had no business winning, casualty-free.  I even succeeded in taking out an enemy base.  The mistake I made early on was not immediately building satellites, and wasting money on other, less important things.  That left me virtually penniless, and option-less for a good stretch.

Now that I've got some better weapons and armor and other stuff, it REALLY feels like X:COM.  Plasma weapons, you will soon be mine.

I finished XCOM on Normal difficulty.  It was great fun but, ultimately, too easy.  I'm starting a new game on Classic Ironman mode, with several Second Wave options enabled (e.g. random soldier stats, greater variety of weapon damage, etc.).

Good luck with that Botch! I started playing on Classic (no Ironman because I don't trust single saves) and eventually threw the towel in even though I was doing well. The heightened difficulty just highlighted how quirky the game's streamlined systems are (like the cover system and chance to hit percentages) and the baffling omissions from the original X-COM. I was going to respond to your previous post but hesitated because my reaction to XCOM was the total opposite (I've got a part-baked article in my drafts outlining most of my misgivings about it). I'm glad you mentioned not being able to get the drop on enemies because that is easily one of the biggest gripes for me too. Anyway, yeah, it's not something I intend on returning to unfortunately. I enjoyed it for a while but the niggles swelled with the difficulty. OpenXcom however, is very much on the cards seeing as it tweaks, polishes, and fixes up the original.

I managed to install my solid state drive; migrating data across drives, backing up and imaging is a pain in the arse.

I started playing Teleglitch again which is still great and still unbelievably difficult. Guns of Icarus, Sonic
Racing and Reus have still got my attention.

After asking Steerpike to get it for me, I'm hitting Fire Emblem: Awakening now in earnest. I'm loving it! Crunchy RPG strategy and adorable anime romance in one package. It's a good game to talk about at the watercooler too.

I am also playing it on Classic (I have never played an X-Com, so that 'also' doesn't exactly contribute, but, it felt right). Mostly I just wanted to let Steerpike know I was enjoying the game.

Hooray! I'm glad you're enjoying it. Giving the gift of game every now and then is the least I can do for those who contribute so tirelessly to Tap.

Except Gregg. Gregg gets no free games. He is my enemy, ever since he won the Picture-Guessing contest in like 2009. That's right, Burnell, you're still in the doghouse!

Gregg I hope you didn't refrain from posting just because you disagreed with me!  I am very interested in hearing your opinions of the game.  This one in particular is a great target for analysis, given the uniqueness and quality of the original, and the design choices Firaxis made.  I'm guessing I would probably agree with you on many points.  I recognize, at least partly, the flaws and mistakes.  The different pieces just don't flow together as well as they did in the original.

I suspect that decisions such as the inability to get the drop on enemies were a result of limited resources (blame the consoles).

Ultimately though, I enjoyed it, and I'm glad that it exists.  I think it has proven that this type of game is viable in the main-stream.  The game itself has problems, but I'm hopeful that there will be another one and that the designers will be able to deepen the complexity the next time around.

I finished Risen 2. It was quite good with lots of exploration but maybe a bit too long. I just started Dishonored and have made my way through the prison and the sewers. I am also most of the way through To The Moon.

A demo for Rayman Legends is out. Like Origins, it's wonderful and whimsical, obviously! I believe the full game is out in late August.

In an effort to be more organized, I've placed alphabetical shortcuts across my desktop. All point to games I intend to play now or in the near future - games I started and never got into, or games I got and never started. There's also little holes for games that are coming soon. So far: Batman: Arkham City (started!), Betrayer (not started yet!), The Bureau (started!), Call of Pripyat Misery mod (won't run!), Gone Home (finished!), I am Alive (started but forgotten, will restart!), Planet Explorers Alpha (planet explored!), Red Faction Armageddon (Steam sale! not started yet!), Sir You are Being Hunted Alpha (ate a boot! shot by robots!), Tomb Raider (started! mostly forgot! will restart!)

Also there's a hole for Rome 2, right there between Red Faction and Sir You are Being Hunted. Organization! It's the key to victory!

I'm going to try and get the article brushed up so I can post it. It wasn't not posted because of you! It was more because, me being me, it was quite wordy and negative so it came off as ranty but I think my criticisms are fair nonetheless. Well, I hope so. I'm a bit conscious of being a moaning bastard basically. It wouldn't be bad but I'm also working on a Sacrifice article too which isn't very positive either. I don't like spending time writing about things I haven't enjoyed because by that point they've already had too much of my time! But when I'm left glaring at the screen because a particularly well rated game has not only fell on the wrong side of me but enraged me I can't help but vent those feelings somewhere, whether it's on Tap's front page (Grim Fandango for example, which I perhaps could have scored lower looking back), in my brother's/friends'/girlfriend's ear, on the forums somewhere here, or everywhere I can (GTA IV). I much prefer singing the praises of games (hence my mostly 5 star reviews!) My Games of the Year lists are always a great-catch all for anything I haven't raved about yet as well.
