I read somewhere, don't remember, about someone speaking favorably of that game Xtal.  Vague enough for ya? :)

I'm playing Mark of the Ninja.  It's very well done.  Great presentation.  Enjoying it so far.

Kentucky Route Zero looks bloody brilliant xtal. I'm seriously digging the aesthetic and feel of what I've seen (the diamond shaped clouds and foliage are particularly nice!). I didn't know it was episodic though... I'm still waiting on The Dream Machine which, admittedly, takes a lot more work to squeeze a single episode out thanks to everything being handmade. Have any of you played the first chapter of that yet? It's free, relatively short and awesome.

Seems like The Dream Machine's first episode was a few years ago. I remember the first, and your review, but to be honest I thought your review was of the completed project? Not so? Hm.

And yes, Kentucky Route Zero, that was it. I like the look.

No, my impressions piece was based on the first two episodes. The third hadn't been released at the time, but it is now available. Hailey and I really want to play it, but after episode one and two we were left itching to play the third but didn't like the wait so we're waiting for them all to be released now so we can do them in one go! Apparently the next two episodes (including the final one) are quite substantial, or involved, or something, so will take longer to finish but I'm really excited about them. After Grim Fandango I thought my inner adventure gamer had slipped away sometime over the last decade or so because I just wasn't enjoying it. It hadn't. I was just playing the wrong game. The Dream Machine convinced me of that, and also relayed the magic of a good adventure game to Hailey who had been left cold by Grim, Sam & Max and, I suppose, Monkey Island (I think she got stuck on that one though!).

Gregg: The Walking Dead. Gory, bleak, and kinda heartrending, but fantastic even for people who don't generally get along with adventures.

Has Hailey tried any of the older turn-based isometric RPGs, like Fallout or Baldur's Gate?

What I'm playing: not a damned thing right now. Trying to get work done!

Hailey and I intend to play The Walking Dead in parallel (I've got the whole season installed and everything). I look forward to it but I can't seem to pull myself away from Natural Selection 2 after the Gorgeous update and now Terraria with Armand and Mike, and Chivalry with those two and Luke. In the wake of Aliens: Colonial Marines I also installed Monolith's Aliens versus Predator 2 as well (I had it in a stray CD/DVD wallet -- what a find!)

I also got sucked into A Valley Without Wind briefly last week but have been distracted by the games above. Meho recommended a game that I saw ages ago which I forgot the name of called Teleglitch. I played the demo and... it's really quite something. Think a top down Quake/Doom directional shoot'em up, procedurally generated with: roguelike sensibilities, a System Shock survival horror bent and a neat crafting system that allows you to combine found junk to create all kinds of crazy weaponry. That's a mouth full, but honestly, it's all those things. Trailer below:

I want to buy it immediately but I need to play Hotline Miami first...

So... yeah, Hotline Miami. I should start that soon.

Demon's Souls is now free for Playstation Plus subscribers.  If you haven't checked it out yet, it's a heck of a game.  Dark Souls improves on it in pretty much every way IMHO, but still, some prefer it.  Great atmosphere, great mechanics.

Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (on my new pearlized pink 3DS XL. The 3D efx is pretty cool; however, as with all 3D efx it eventually gives me a headache/makes my eyes cross so I turned it off.) and the iOS version of Cognition episode 1

Plus it's got the Maiden in Black. And there's just something about that creaky Demon's Souls intro (the one with narration, not the other awesome one) that makes me want to curl up with the game for hours. Dark is the undisputed champion of the world, no doubt, but Demon's is still very special. The stark castle Boletaria, the nauseatingly terrifying Latria, and of course everyone's favourite: the Valley of Defilement! As if it wasn't dreadful enough (more than Blighttown, I would say) once you're through it all you have to engage in one of the most challenging boss fights ever against Garl Vinland and Maiden Astraea. Oh From Soft! I WOULD MAKE LOVE TO YOU IF YOU WERE A THING THAT I COULD MAKE LOVE TO!

Yes, the tone of Demon's Souls is much darker and foreboding I think.  And harder too.  I suspect those are reasons some people prefer it.  And the Valley of Defilement is, by magnitudes, more dreadful than Blighttown.

I played through the first two hours of the new Tomb Raider.  It's quite unlike any other game I've ever played.  I'm still not sure what to think of it, and I'm not sure I've actually played anything yet.  So far it bears absolutely no resemblance to the Tomb Raider I know, although I only ever played the original.

To be fair, it's still introducing mechanics, but it's got this whole leveling system and collectible stuff and whatnot that I'm not sure adds anything, other than to make you run around every corner of the map looking for scrap and ammo and who knows what else.  It's the sort of klepto-gaming that tends to put me off.  We'll see how annoying it becomes.

What I don't miss from the old Tomb Raider was the combat, especially with the wildlife.  There is some of that here, but it's not nearly as monotonous.  What little platforming I've done seems largely perfunctory.  That may change, and I hope it does.  That was a highlight of the original.  Other mechanics seem well done, such as cover, but I'm still getting used to Lara's movements.  I'm playing on the PC with a controller, which I prefer for third person.  K/M seems like it would be clunky, sort of like trying to play Dark Souls, but my years of console gaming have turned me off to playing games with a keyboard.

The story is the strongest part so far.  There's a mystery to be solved, and I'm eager to engage it.  I'm still confused about who all the characters are though - it throws a bunch of them at you at once without much introduction.

I'm still fiddling with the graphical settings.  Frankly, I can't tell the difference between normal, ultra, helmet hair, rendered hair, etc.  That's one thing I've never much cared for with PC gaming.  I just want to play a game, and I don't rightly know what anisotropic filtering is or why I should care.

Silly Botch! Anisotropic Filtering adjusts dither levels in textures viewed at oblique angles, such that the texture would not be perpendicular to the camera lens, using a non-isotropic alias reduction algorithm to address spatial parralax distortions and Moire artifacts in textures at various viewing positions.

Everybody knows that.

Tomb Raider... it does interest me. I like a good scavenging mechanic (though I don't think any game has ever had a truly great one yet), and it does sound like they went more for character development and story in this reboot. I look forward to hearing more of your reactions.

As to me, I just got my Director's Cut copy of Deadly Premonition, and I'm happily playing away. I forgot how unbelievably weird that game is; Twin Peaks meets a... er... Twin Peaks. I promised AJ I'd finish it this time, since I mocked it in my Alan Wake review!

I'll thank you to keep your dither levels out of my parallax distortions, sirrah!

Deadly Premonition.  My Xbox copy is sitting there, taunting me, all cracked skin and broken teeth.  It's just so painful to even turn that crappy 360 on these days.  Am I the only one for whom the dialogue and visuals in the cutscenes were so woefully out of sync as to be un-watchable?

It's an issue even in the "remastered" Director's Cut - which, I assure you, they the mastering of which was re'd as little as possible. If anything it looks worse, which gives it a sort of charm, except when the muddy visuals prevent you from seeing things you need to see. Goes without saying that they did not, in fact, redo the cutscene audio sync. But I must not weary or flag! Someone killed that girl* and I'm going to find out who!

*I still believe it was those two demon children from the opening cutscene. Technically I think they're supposed to just be "children," but... well, anyone who's played Deadly Premonition knows what I mean.

Tomb Raider is growing on me.  It's an extremely polished game, but that's not why.  The looting and collecting, while more useful for some things than others, is largely optional.  But the rewards are tangible and I'm liking the whole thing more and more.  Even things which don't directly affect your bottom line as it were, are interesting.  All of them contribute to your experience, which allows for purchasing skill improvements.

Some are simply relics, and those are the most easily ignored.  Others are sort of like journal entries of people from various times and they help to flesh out the story, sometimes significantly.  It was sort of a bold move, to leave what seem to be important story bits scattered about to be found or ignored.  I kind of like it.  For those who only want non-stop adventure, they don't get in the way.  What I like is that you can go back to earlier areas quickly and leisurely hunt for stuff, or not.  So it creates a nice rhythm of playing through the dramatic parts of an area, without having to be in full-on klepto mode, then coming back later as a sort of downtime.

There's a strong Lost-like vibe about the story, which is fine with me because I adored Lost.  And now that I'm understanding more about Laura's companions (this information is doled out, flashback style, as you work your way through the plot) I'm even more engaged.

Also, stealth-killing baddies with an arrow through the throat is extremely satisfying.  You can even sneak up behind them and apply an ammunition-free put down.  It requires some suspension of disbelief, as a slight young woman like Lara would be no physical match for a full-grown man, but no matter.  It's fun and gives you the feeling of being a hunter of men - vulnerable, yet lethal.

It's an expensive-looking game, and as was discussed in a different thread, Square Enix's expectations were completely unrealistic.  It would be a shame if things end here.  Crystal Dynamics went off in a thoroughly different direction here.  It's much more than simply a "reboot", and while it may not payoff financially, it's made a believer out of me.

So Botch, would you liken the new TR to anything we expected it to be? Is it only a bit Uncharted-y, or maybe a lot DXHR-y? Or somewhat Assassin's Creed IV in the jungle-y? Or just its own beast?

I also strongly dislike collecting that serves nothing but achievements; some of the more useless examples that come to mind being flags/feathers from AssCreed and coffee thermoses in Alan Wake (though I understand- thematically- the idea behind it, they were still pointless as far as I know). I actually am growing to like the Uncharted-style collecting, where it's entirely optional but if you do want to put yourself in that treasure hunter mindset you can find some pretty neat stuff with back story. Where does Lara's collecting fall? Busywork or enjoyable/purposeful?

Side note: I also have a 360 copy of Deadly Premonition (non- re-release) ... maybe we should organize a long distance party chat evening of deadly premonition-ing.

If you two could record your voices reacting to Deadly Premonition in real time - especially if xtal hasn't played it before - it would be worth cash money.

No. It would be priceless.

Xtal, I stated that Tomb Raider was unlike anything else I've played, but that's not quite true.  I can see it's influences for sure.  I think it manages to be just as cinematic as Uncharted, while having much deeper mechanics (e.g. the platforming actually requires skill and timing, although not to the degree of, say, a Prince of Persia.  And the gunplay, or bowplay if you like, is superior).  Speaking of platforming, I do sort of wish that part were even more technical, but it's not a huge gripe.  It does have its share of QTEs.  So beware if that turns you off.

I also see influences from Resident Evil 4, in terms of that game's excellent pacing and some of its story presentation.  RE4 is such an odd beast.  It did so many things right, but then almost instantly became obsolete.

I can't compare to Assassin's Creed, as I've never played one.  But I can say that it's much more of a linear story than DXHR.  It does have the skill upgrades, which can really change your approach as you unlock more advanced ones.  That part took me by surprise, as it means that new mechanics are being introduced even fairly far into the game.  After a while, Lara really starts to feel like a force to be feared.

What it really does is take its influences and then simply execute its own style very well.

Every collectible contributes something, even the relics I mentioned earlier.  Actually, those give you some of the biggest experience boosts.  Still, I think it is perfectly possible to make it through the game without going after everything.  But's that's not to say that there's no incentive to do so - see my point about Lara's bad-assery.

So on the collectible spectrum, I'd say Tomb Raider falls much closer to the purposeful end.  It's not forced, but it's given good incentives.
