Deadly Premonition is coming to PS3. Aw man, and I just started it on Xbox. What I've seen is, how shall I say this...WEIRD. I'm still not sure if it's the good weird or the "what is that I don't even?!" weird. It also seems to have some technical problems. The entirety of that first meeting with the local sheriff was marred by audio/video sync problems.
"Don't...want to...DIE!!!"
Rule #2: Double-tap
I've started playing Deus Ex: Human Revolution which I'm enjoying a lot so far.
I was kind of looking forward to the first boss fight (which I fought the other night) just to see how bad they really are and to offload all my ammo into it (playing non-lethal is giving me an itchy trigger finger and the weapons look/feel so awesome). But yeah, bad boss fight was bad. It was sort of like "Here's some cover to hide behind, but here's some grenade spamming to make you run out into the boss's crossfire." In the end I just threw fire extinguishers, explosive barrels and toxic barrels at him until he died. I had to restart close to ten times but thankfully it didn't last long and before I knew it I was back in Detroit finishing off a few cool quests before my trip to China. Also, the hacking is amazing and the conversations are great. I'm much preferring it to the original.
Problems: inventory management is clunky and unresponsive. Character animations don't gel well with the rest of the game's sterling production values. Not being able to ironsight behind cover (this is just illogical and terrible if you have reticules turned off), certain weapons don't have any way of aiming without reticules (which is kind of funny at times). Flashbangs can blind you even if Jensen isn't staring directly at the flash, it's based on where your camera is facing which is stupid. And that's all I can think of for now.
Someone needs to fix iron sights in general in video games. That's not how it looks when you sight down the barrel of an unscoped gun; people have peripheral vision, half their view (including the target) isn't blocked by the iron sight. Also, when you aim a pistol, you don't press it up against your cheekbone.
Sorry for that little tangent.
Agreed on your complaints, Gregg, and your compliments. Human Revolution is the best one yet. Keep enjoying. But Dark Souls is calling you!

Least I be counted among The Missing, I am >here<.
Played some Rift followed by The Witcher 2. Finally, a PS3 slim on CowBoom hit my price point so I journeyed in Journey (with the understanding that my controller dexterity = Scout's).
Then I drifted & installed & intro'd, unable to find a game that felt just right (you all know that feeling, doesn't it suck?).
You will never ever guess the game that stuck: Everquest II. In fact, I think my experience requires a separate thread.
To be continued....
Gregg we must have some kind of weird mind meld thing going on b/c I just picked up DXHR after a long hiatus. I had left off just before going to Hengsha. I had a hard time getting motivated to get back into b/c, you know, Dark Souls. But now that I have I am hooked again. I can kind of see where it's going, but that in no way hinders my enjoyment. A worthy successor to Deus Ex it is.

I just started Deus Ex: Human Revolution also. Thank you, Pokey, for giving me a nudge and saying I could do it. I am just in early days but liking it a lot. I won't get into any of the techical discussion about what is bad or good since I wouldn't know (having played a limited number of games outside the adventure game realm -- mainly Thief, Fallout and Elder Scroll games). But I do like the story (pertinent to our time) and that I have multiple ways of getting through situations. Since what originally got me out of pure adventure games was Thief, I do like a game where one can sneak a lot.
Kay
Imagine life with no hypothetical situations.
Yeah, it's a very accommodating game. I've not felt as if I've 'wasted' any augmentation upgrades yet ie. I haven't not used any of my abilities in one way or another. In that regards it's very well designed. I think you'll enjoy it Kay, just don't lose heart when facing the bosses! They're bad but thankfully short-lived.
One thing that has been bothering me is that the inhabitants of Detroit, Hengsha, and I suspect DX:HR in general, are very tolerant of breaking and entering and blatant robbery. I'm no lethal maniac but I am a pack rat, and I will steal anything and everything if it's not nailed down or being guarded. As it happens hardly anything is guarded. Or nailed down. Lower city Hengsha is just one massive open store front with storage cupboards, credit chips and safes ripe for the plucking. Where the hell are the owners? Do they not care for their precious livelihoods? It's very bizarre.
Another thing is I feel like I'm gaming the game a bit. I mean, taking out targets non-lethally is quantitatively more beneficial than lethally taking them out (more XP, silent, you can sleep easy at night). Only if they're alerted does lethal action have any place. Exploring is rewarded with XP and nearly every air vent in the game doles out an XP reward so I'm damn well going to crawl through them all. Which is fine because that's what I do anyway, but still. The biggest problem in the XP system is that hacking is more beneficial than finding a key code and using it (at least I think it is), which just seems stupid to me. You should get a lot more XP for being resourceful and finding a key code in my opinion. Hacking should be a last resort. I noticed last night that there was an area I could access if I stacked a few boxes and climbed up (no simple task because I needed the heavy lifting augmentation and most boxes were quite some distance away) but once I managed it I was awarded 300 XP for pathfinding, which was nice.
I've finally escaped the nightmare that is Shalebridge Cradle. I don't think I'm exaggerating when I say it makes the Bonehoard look like an afternoon at the beach. Well maybe a little.
It must have taken some serious faith to make the decision to leave the first part free of adversaries. It really ratchets up the tension.

I finished Deadly Shadows. It certainly has its flaws (such as Harbor Master's re-spawning town guards), but overall a good game. It doesn't fall into that trap of making the final encounter rely on something other than the skills you've been cultivating the entire game.
I thought the story was very well done, although I got confused at times about who was who. That may be more attributable to sporadic playing than anything else though. I've not played Thief 2, so I can't compare it to that one.

Finished Torment. Bravo Black Isle. You're sorely missed, but your legacy lives on elsewhere.
The part I found particularly satisfying was when it dawned on me, organically, that no way was I going to give my will over to Practical Incarnation, and proceeded to find the exact solution to making sure he surrendered his to me. The whole Deionarra story was also a highlight, but in a heart-breaking kind of way.
I'm playing Gemini Rue now and quite enjoying it. I don't play many adventure games anymore but this one has sucked me into its downplayed sci-fi (and by that I don't mean space opera) machinations.

Excellent Botch! Torment just bowled me over; I couldn't get enough of the lore, and the story and the dialogue. It was so rewarding to explore places and talk to people. Objects were intriguing too. I'll never forget the scary Lady of Pain doll, the ominous vase and the hilarious conversation with Mort while fiddling with the Modron cube. In fact that weird shop was amazing. The picture of Ravel in the museum across the road (at least the description of it!) and various stories I heard about her paved the way to one of the most heartstopping encounters I've had in a game. I didn't care one iota about all the stats and levels and XP and stuff. I'm just glad I went CHR and INT! Mort is hands down my favourite sidekick though. In fact, Torment is probably my favourite videogame and perversely one of the hardest to get people to play (and finish)!
Hands up people, who didn't finish Planescape: Torment? As far as I know, aside from you Botch, there's only Scout and I who have completed it around these parts.
Gregg you point out my main gripe with Torment, to wit, the character building portion. It's a great game, but a flawed one. The combat is a disorganized mess. I ended up with so much random, inscrutable stuff that I could never keep track of what did what (This is a general gripe I have about D&D specifically: it's difficult for me to get enthusiastic about +1 to hit and the like. And I had about fifteen items which bestowed just that or some variation).
It's really an adventure game in the classical sense and works best when approached as such. I liken it to the original System Shock, which most people didn't know what to do with. If you were expecting Doom, you were bound to be underwhelmed.
The wealth of choices and hidden possibilities was almost too much for someone without much subtlety of thought. But that's more a statement about my shortcomings than anything. I applaud Black Isle for actually having something to say.
I finished Gemini Rue last night. It's pretty short. I liked it, but ultimately thought it was just OK. The voice acting was awkward at times, and the writing started to break down near the end. Still, I don't like to be too harsh on these small projects. I'm pleased that such games exist.
Rule #2: Double-tap
Add me. Torment = not completed. Ha, that's grossly inaccurate, I've barely even started the game. God, I should.
Glad you played Gemini Rue, Botch; even if it wasn't fully satisfying to you. I loved the final act, ahh but to each their own. In Gold Star-ing & personal GOTY-ing it I won't denying being overzealous, but part of me drank the Kool-aid and was simply joyed to be wrapped up in a genuine revitalization of adventure gaming. I stand by my convictions. Pop into my review and enjoy the bad jokes I probably make!
