Sounds just dandy. Staying tuned for your later final thoughts.

Well I finished Tomb Raider.  Took me about 30 hours.  Honestly, I thought it was wrapping up at one point earlier on, but turns out it was just getting its second wind.  However, it never felt like it dragged on.  On the contrary, it was one absolutely wild and spectacular ride.

First the good.  The level design is superb.  So many varied locations and each one more stunning than the next.  The production values of this game continually blew my mind.  I don't know how it looks on the consoles, but on PC it is a marvel.  The story, while containing no surprises, was perfectly solid.  Some of the dialogue was a bit cheesy, but overall quite good.  Better than your typical summer blockbuster for sure.

Crystal Dynamics has lifted the bar for this sort of game.  I honestly think it exceeds Uncharted in almost every way.  I compare it to that game because it is primarily a linear, action adventure in the Uncharted mold.  But it does several things which make it more than just that.  I'm speaking mainly of the skills and weapon upgrades.  By the end of the game Lara is a singular force of destruction, rightly loathed and feared by the enemy.  And that bow!  Great fun.

I only have two (sort of) complaints.  First, I'm still ambivalent about the collecting, though mainly because I'm traditionally not a fan of such things.  However, to be fair, Tomb Raider doesn't throw anything at you that is irrelevant to the game or takes you out of it. It all fits very well, or as well as these things can be expected to.

The other is hard to articulate, but here goes.  Obviously, this game is focused on combat.  Although there is a fair bit of platforming, it doesn't take first place.  I say that hesitantly because honestly it's an arguable point.  My best argument is that most of your upgrades are weapon-based, and the fighting is more challenging than the platforming.

And that's just it - calling this game "Tomb Raider" is almost misleading.  Where are the tombs?  Oh sure, there are some small, puzzle rooms to find and solve that are completely optional.  But that's it.  Still I don't count that as a huge knock against it, since, taken on its own terms it is an exceptionally good game.  But what it makes me want is a game where I'm, you know, actually raiding tombs.  I want to explore ancient catacombs and dark, eldritch places where no living man (er, woman) should rightly be, puzzling over centuries-old riddles with only the barest of clues.  Something like that, combined with all of the other sensibilities that Crystal Dynamics has brought to this production - that's what I want to play.

Hmm, this is further proof that I ought to check it out. I wish I had someone to play the Guardian of Light with -- that was surprisingly fun.

I picked up Primordia on sale from GoG (what a stellar business those guys are running).  I'm not that far in but I like what I see so far.

I've been playing Dishonoured and enjoying it.   I suspect the reason I like it so much is that it takes me back to my very first nonadventure game (or maybe adventure + game) -- Thief.   I loved that I could sneak around and didn't have to kill people (althought that doesn't bother me much these days).    It was my portal into other types of games.   And Dishonoured  has a good story and fairly good graphics which is always a plus for me.

Oh, I also am playing The Quivering. It is a very old adventure game that is a take off on horror movies and a lot of other things.  I found it great fun when I first played it and recently found it on Gamefly for download.   It's a little nostagia trip to my early days of gaming.

I  have Kentucky Route Zero and The Cave downloaded and I expect will look at them next.

In the background is still Skyrim.  I haven't completed the main quest and have DLC to work on but this is my fallback game for when I don't have anything that really appeals to me.

If you two could record your voices reacting to Deadly Premonition in real time – especially if xtal hasn’t played it before – it would be worth cash money.

No. It would be priceless.

Ha ha, priceless isn't the word that immediately springs to mind.  Although given how bizarre it is, you may be right. grin

Kay, any game which can take you back to playing Thief is A Good Game ;-) Okay, perhaps not, but Dishonored is brilliant. I played it for the first time just over a month ago and it blew me away. Everything from the slick UI and sound design, to the beautiful environments and Corvo's fluid movement were so impeccably designed. I can see why some people found it hard to adjust to Bioshock Infinite's straightjacket afterwards! I want to do a chaotic playthrough of Dishonored now I've completed it with minimal casualties. The combat looked so smooth and satisfying it was a shame to play non-lethally throughout! Apparently it plays out very differently if you cut your way through the game though. The Knife of Dunwall DLC looks terrific but I'm yet to pick it up.

I've been playing Sine Mora recently and picked up The Swapper yesterday, which I can safely say, after ten minutes with it, is one of most gorgeous 2D games I've ever played. It's got all the signs of being a great game too - a very cool core mechanic and an intriguing narrative (written by Tom Jubert, the Penumbra and FTL guy) that taps into the idea of that mechanic and notions of the self. I'm getting Moon and Metroid vibes from it, which is just perfect for me. Like The Dream Machine, the graphics are all handmade from found objects and clay. The sound too is apparently made in the same way, from found noises, like in And Yet It Moves. Very cool in my book. I used to do a lot of sound recording and editing at university which I used in my screen work and it's such an exciting and enjoyable way of making something sound unique.

If they make a Dishonored 2 I hope the heart doesn't suck. Seriously. It went from being the coolest gadget to the saddest once I heard it say the same thing twice. Fair complaint? Probably not, but.. meh.

I had a good time with Dishonored but accepted that I won't bother playing it again, and so traded it for some change which bought me three Resistance games.

sigh

Gregg, you'll have to tell me if playing chaotic is interesting at all. I'm going to assume not, but you never know.

June should be a bountiful month for ps+ folk; from IGN:

For starters, five new games are joining the Instant Game Collection at various times throughout the month. The new games that will be free are: Deus Ex: Human Revolution(PS3), Machinarium (PS3), Saints Row: The Third (PS3), Orc Attack (Vita) and Zero Escape: Virtue’s Last Reward (Vita).

For those keeping track, that’s $154.95 worth of fresh, completely free games in June.

The following games are leaving the Instant Game Collection throughout the course of the month, at the date designated: Sleeping Dogs (PS3, June 4th), Closure (PS3, June 11th), Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One (PS3, June 11th), Infamous 2 (PS3, June 11th), LittleBigPlanet 2 (PS3, June 11th), SoulCalibur: Broken Destiny (PSP, June 18th) and BlazBlue: Continuum Shift Extend (Vita, June 25th).

Definitely an investment I don't regret. I won't rank it up there with Amazon Prime quite yet, but I ain't complaining. All these games plus Arrested Development? Count me in!

I have now played dishonored both with minimal kills and high chaos.   It is a different game in terms of how many adversaries (people and rats) one has to deal with, how people react to you as you move along and especially the ending.   Is it worth playing twice?  It was for me since I really liked it.   For others, I can't say.    Kay

I just finished The Swapper last night. I recommend it highly, especially to fans of science fiction. It's a great puzzle game on the same level as Portal, albeit with quite a different style. I also got heavy vibes of 2001 and The Dig.

Gregg and I are going to have A Chat about it once he's through.

Kay, if you finished with a high chaos rating then I think you'll have got the darker ending which I haven't seen. There's a chance that things will have differed in other areas too as a result of this. I managed to keep my chaos rating low so I got the happier ending (I think you have to keep the death toll below 20% of the total number of guards/civilians per level to get low chaos).

I wouldn't want to say whether it's worth playing again seeing as I've only finished it once myself, but I can say that, depending on how thorough you were, there's a ton of stuff to discover if you're keen enough and plenty of things that can be handled differently. If I play again I'll be a blood thirsty maniac hell bent on getting a high chaos rating for the alternative ending. I'll also switch some of my decisions around to see what different things happen. As a more non-lethal Corvo I found it very difficult to resist getting stuck into all the weapons, equipment and abilities, they just sounded so much more fun than the sleeper hold and sleep darts!

xtal, I totally agree with your thoughts on the heart. I actually liked the idea of it, just not the execution. Click, listen, click, listen, click, listen, click, repeated dialogue, walk away-- on every person in the game, just in case. It was the same with the dialogue in general. Just give me Deus Ex: Human Revolution's two-batches-of-dialogue-and-you're-finished please. To my knowledge, nobody in that game had anything fresh to say after a couple of interacts which meant I could just crack on with things without having to OCD-interact for a third, fourth, fifth time.

As far as playing chaotic goes, I can only imagine it's a hoot because pretty much every game mechanic gets used that way guns, swords, mines, grenades, rats, wind, fire darts, etc. (rather than just non-lethal stuff like dark vision, blink, sleeper hold, sleep darts, possession etc.) and you don't spend most of your time hiding and waiting either. From what I've heard off Joel, who's played through twice -- one low chaos, one high (his final part covers the high rating, which I've not read yet) -- he says the differences are marked and quite illuminating in places. I think the experience is still a bit too fresh for me to be playing through again any time soon but I certainly would like to when my memories dull a bit.

Anyone ever played the Infamous (sorry, I refuse to write "inFAMOUS," much in the same way I refuse to stand down on the "Ico" versus "ICO" issue (hint: It's "Ico"!)) games?

I've started the first one because...I've had it downloaded since Sony gave it away for free after the PS hack/crash...and it's just been sitting there so I thought I'd give it a try.

Not sure how to describe it properly. It's...kind of open world like GTA is, I guess? There are mission markers on the map, like GTA, and you kill things with reckless abandon, again like GTA. But you're also nearly invulnerable, can jump off skyscrapers and land on the pavement without a scratch, and can scale said skyscrapers faster than King Kong can swat at an airplane. The story's fluff, though the comic book interludes are neat. The protagonist, Cole McGrath, is pretty vacant, no doubt a sibling or extended family member of good old Shootington McChristmas.

McGrath is a parkour god; it's almost as if the game won't allow failure.

None of what I'm saying sounds particularly good. It's not bad though, but a couple hours in I certainly don't see what all the fuss was about. Maybe it's just that "open/sandbox" urban worlds hardly interest me these days.

Xtal you mentioned a while back that you had picked up a copy of King's Field The Ancient City.  Have you had a chance to play it yet?

I just finished LA Noire. I liked it though it had a few technical problems. At times the character would move super slow, but it got much better later in the game. I didn't care much for the interviews as I had a hard time judging whether it was the truth or lie. The game got better  as I played, the arson part being the best. When I finished, I took a tour of LA, checking out the landmarks. Visited Angel's Flight and Union Station. I wondered if I could get into the station, and I could. Then I walked down to the trains and a train came through while I was there. It was very interesting for someone who has visited LA.

I have not. Saving it for a rainy day, whatever those are.

Pokey, I also found L.A. Noire's final act to be its strongest. Too bad it took so long to pick up. I can't remember, but it was probably, as you said, the arson desk where the missions finally became a bit interesting. This may be a ridiculous complaint, but I honestly think there were too many cast members of Mad Men in L.A. Noire. To the point that I thought I was playing Mad Men: The 1930s: The Game at times.

I played Infamous for maybe 20 minutes, just curious, when I got it after the hack. Having fairly recently gotten to the very end of (but not quite finished) Prototype, I didn't feel - at the time - like another wild open city game, but I might go back to it now. I had pretty much the same reaction you did, Xtal. I also put an hour or so into Sleeping Dogs, but Deadly Premonition and, currently, The Last of Us are what have my attention now. Once I'm done with them I think I'll pick something from my backlog... one for PC, one for PS3. The quiet season is the time to make progress there!

I had a somewhat similar experience with another PS+ free game - Vanquish.  After playing it a few minutes I quickly came to the conclusion that while it was a very well-made game, it just wasn't for me.  It's too bad - I consider Platinum one of the good guys.  I mean, it's Shinji Mikami who's practically a legend in my mind.
