“Good day, sir. Say, that’s a fine hat you’re wearing.” “Indeed.” “Would you mind if I tried it on?” “Beg your pardon, I daresay you’re a madman, sir. You? Try on my hat? What would the lawman think?!” “By my best estimation, good sir, the lawman would hum a gay tune, tip his own headpiece, and go about his business. Why, didn’t you hear? Today’s the day the proposed law of Wearing Another Gentleman’s Hat has graduated …
One year ago Playdead Games‘ Limbo was announced as the lead-off title in Xbox Live’s “Summer of Arcade” for 2010. It wasn’t believed to be in development for any other systems until, little more than a week ago, a summer 2011 release for PS3 and Steam was announced. Today, Playdead have revealed those launch dates. Limbo will arrive on the PlayStation Network for North America and Europe on July 19 and 20, respectively, and worldwide on Steam, August …
Under normal circumstances the release of a patch is not a noteworthy event. However, the amount of bugs hiding in the crevices of Fallout: New Vegas at the time of its release would frighten even the most unflinching New York landlord. For that reason every patch implementation since last October has been met with dances around bonfires and such.
So began today what was perhaps inevitable: those folks who run that Steam thing have allowed themselves to admit to themselves that their wonderful Steam Sales are just that: sales. But also: wonderful. Instead of waiting until the middle of the week, weekend, or holidays celebrating dead people, they’re just going to have the things every damned day. For the rest of time.* Although all that other stuff will surely still occur. As that jerk …
Review by Max “Xtal” Boone Anomaly: Warzone Earth Developer 11 bit studios Publisher 11 bit studios Released April 8, 2011 Available for PC/Mac, iOS (coming soon) Time Played Completed Verdict: 4/5 Thumbs Up “Ultimately what I felt I got from Anomaly was a solid campaign which lasted me somewhere between 3-5 hours, and that’s probably what any seasoned player of tower defense/offense will get as well. If you lack any experience in the genre I’d …
“Well I did it,” begins a recent post on Blizzard’s World of Warcraft forums. We often discuss here at Tap-Repeatedly how killing, in its many forms, has long been the predominant form of expressing progress in the medium of video games. Today it is such a given to seasoned gamers, most of us would never give pause to even consider what we’re doing. Although the how has evolved — from the hell-spawn in Doom, to …
Review by Max “Xtal” Boone Gemini Rue Developer Joshua Nuernberger Publisher Wadjet Eye Games Released February 24, 2011 Available for PC Time Played Completed (7-8 hours, give or take) Verdict: 5/5 Gold Star “Anyone who is familiar with the adventure games that were being made 15 or even 20 years ago will feel right at home here. Gemini Rue is a classic in every sense, one that is definitely set to appeal to enthusiasts of …
I know you’ve grown tired of the zombification of our planet. I have too, friends. However, being late to the party is not a crime, in fact sometimes it might even be a good thing. Enter: Dead Island. Sometimes you go away for a long weekend and when you come back you find electronically transmitted pieces of mail from your friends; heartwarming it is. Sometimes those pieces of mail show you a teaser/trailer that you …
You may have heard of a game at IGF 2010; a game called Boryokudan Rue. We touched on it briefly last March. Well, that game is no longer called Boryokudan Rue; it now goes by the much more conversation-friendly title Gemini Rue. Aside from that it seems nothing else has changed: it remains a point and click adventure game for personal computers; part sci-fi, part steampunk, and part 1990s-adventure-gaming-halcyon-days nostalgia that is sure to appeal …
Alex Trebek: “65,000.” Contestant: “What is the approximate number of lines of spoken dialogue in Fallout: New Vegas?” Trebek: “Correct.” Words, words, words. You might say there are a lot of them in Obsidian Entertainment’s latest opinion divider. I might agree with you for saying as much. But so far I’m enjoying them, and I hope you can too.
Summer. It’s a beautiful time of year, isn’t it? Well, on the northern slice of the planet, I should say– sorry Aussies, et al. It’s a time to hear the laughter of children playing in the streets (well, not in the city; I hear drunkards in the streets, mostly), a time to visit beaches and canyons (must confess I haven’t done much of this either), and a time to sample summer beers at your local …
Review by Xtal Dead Space Developer: EA Redwood Shores Publisher: Electronic Arts Released: 14 October 2008 Available for: PC, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 [reviewed] Time Played: Completed twice (approximately 25 hours) Verdict: 3/5 Middlin’ “Dead Space had no need to cater to an expected “mainstream shooter” audience. It had enough unique tricks that could have made it a wholly altered experience. Unfortunately it comes out bland and carbon-copied”
Playdead Games’ Limbo has been given a release date! Of my living years, 1994 is the first I remember as An Epic Year For Gaming. Up until this point I had dabbled in a handful of computer adventure games that my parents bought and the limited pile of NES games I had: Super Mario Bros., Jeopardy!, The Empire Strikes Back and Blades of Steel to name a few. My horizons were about to expand on Christmas of 1993: I received a Sega Genesis. As …
