I didn't want to start a new thread so I'll just throw it in here. Saw a comment this morning on RPS linking to a place called Gamers Gate (I'd never heard of it) who are having some good summer sales at the moment.

Have you finished Stalker Armand? It's just that if you've never played it before then you're in a very good position to get the most from what was otherwise a flawed masterpiece. There are quite a few mod packages out now which fix most of the bugs and tighten up the gameplay. I'm sure Steerpike would argue that Stalker is worth keeping vanilla for your first playthrough but in truth if you only play it through once I'd recommend unleashing the beast with one of the mod packages.
At the very least check them out!
Stalker Complete 2009 ('2012' is to be released later this year, apparently with further improvements)
Different people swear by different ones, some say that L.U.R.K. is a little buggy in places but restores the stealth elements of the game that were horrendously borked in the original (very stressful when an entire camp hears you reload your gun!) while Complete apparently does that as well as a bunch of other improvements (new weather effects, more detailed textures, more campfire songs etc.) Oblivion Lost is the much loved original but I'm not sure how up-to-date that is compared to Complete and L.U.R.K.
I've got to admit that some of the bugs actually added to the overall craziness of the zone but some caused real problems and I wouldn't recommend wrangling with them.
I'd played both the Stalkers in this package in the past. I got pretty frustrated with the first one between the punishing difficulty, lack of any real tutorial or instruction, and overall bugginess of it. All that said, the difficulty does add a certain appeal to it. I've played a bit of Pripyat as well, and thought that one seemed much more approachable in a number of ways, but was missing some of the fear factor of the other one. I only spent a few hours with either copy, so I'm not in much of a position to comment I guess. Never tried Clear Sky.
I played a bit this time after the download as well. I'd been playing a bit, and I literally went from full hp to dead in under a second at one point. Loaded up the last save to see I was about 20 minutes behind where I died, and figured I'd come back to it. : )
The biggest trouble I have with it though is half the time I have no idea what I'm supposed to be doing. Mostly I'm in a just-try-not-to-die mode. I am dedicated to making it further into this however, as people just go on and on about how cool they are. I'll check out the mods before I play again though. I usually try to play the first play-through of games vanilla, but I don't know if I'm really gonna play these more then once.. We'll see.
EDIT: Well, I've downloaded Stalker Complete 2009 after reading up on them a bit. Seems it's the most… well, complete package, stable and
improving upon the game without changing the story or gameplay at all. I have to admit, it looks much nicer, runs smoother, and has improved my outlook on the game a bit. I just had to retry the same beginner level mission about 6 times before I finally got through without failing, but
it sure looked nice every time I did it! The weather effects are real nice so far too. May be worth checking out actually.
EDIT 2: I'm pretty sure this was one of the mod effects, but you can see large shadows float across the landscape to simulate shadows cast by clouds. Freakin' awesome! Also, if this is the first one in the series (is it?) when does it explain what's actually going on? Cause I have no idea.
Gah! Stop it! You're making me want to replay it! 😉 Cloud shadows you say...
We've a thread on Stalker: Shadow of Chernobyl in the Bollocks forum which should give you some good pointers... let me dig it out.
Aha!
The Complete mod has emerged since then so it doesn't get a mention.
Another one I need to get back to. I'm awfully sick of hearing myself say that but I can't help it if I get sucked into 4-hour sessions of Alien Swarm with Gregg on the weekend, can I?
Maybe a shiny mod will bring me back to Stalker; though generally I am against mods, if only for the fact that they make me do things. Things like search, download, install, tinker. And to hell with that. It's all just a bit of wank chips, isn't it then?
If being wrong's a crime I'm serving forever
This is a self installing mod. All you do is run an exe file, and next thing you know, it's working.
It has minimul instructions including, install game, start-up game, exit game, install mod.
If you guys ever want an extra team member on Alien Swarm or any other online game (L4D2 or Warband or something), my Steam ID is bluebogle.
Haven't really used Steam for multiplayer, and don't do much multiplayer in general, but just putting it out there.
None of my friends really play video games (snobby bastards) so it could be fun to play games with.. you know, other gamers.
Modding can be double wank and shit chips but when it's all conveniently bundled into one neat download, how can you refuse? Cloud shadows, CLOUD FREAKING SHADOWS.
xtal, you'll like this article. It's by the Harbour Master dude who drops by to comment now and then and it's a very good read for us veterans with too many games and not nearly enough time.
Thanks Gregg. I feel the same as HM. Except he has a kid, whereas I have nothing near that level of responsibility preventing me from playing games as much as I'd like.
You know, I'm also getting rather tired of calling games "games." Game, or Games, is an almost automatically negative word. When do we hear people saying it? "[blah], [blah], [blah], it's only a game."
Only a game you say? Well then we'll just have to make it not be a game.
From this day forth, I propose a new name to replace "video game(s)." I propose: disco pork. We all like disco and pork, it's a match made in heaven.
Gregg: "Max, have you sampled the latest disco pork in the Settlers series?"
Max: "Setters 7: Intense American Cover Man? Why yes, yes I have, Gregg. A bit shit, don't you think?"
Gregg: "It's as if you've flown a micro-sized spaceship into my brain and collected my thoughts before I was permitted to divulge them to you myself."
Max: "When it comes to the disco pork, I'm on your wavelength. Now where have I gone and put my monocle?"
If being wrong's a crime I'm serving forever
We could call them "Bangles Pork." I KNOW everyone loves The Bangles. Anyone who doesn't is not welcome at this site.
"Pork" might also be an issue – Ajax19, one of my best friends, will not eat pork. He will not eat anything smarter than his dog. I know his dog; Ajax is understandably a vegan.
So how about "Bangles Oatmeal Cookies?"
I'm downloading Alien Swarm. I have to learn. I also want to learn how to type British like xtal is learning.
EDIT: that post by Harbour Master is great. One of the best "days gone by" reflections on how hard it is to play games these days that I've read. I often reflect on these things. Nice to see others do as well.
Life is the misery we endure between disappointments.
Recently I've had to hand cut, assemble and pack 400 banners individually at work and they hired a teenage girl (16 or 17) to help me with them over the course of 6 days. She is probably the brightest young person I've met in a long time (she wants to be a doctor) and she was a cracking worker. On the first day we put the radio on while we got to work on the banners and when this song came on I remarked how Scouting for Girls were probably the worst band I'd ever heard. It just so happened she'd seen them perform live a couple of weeks previous. Oops. We chatted about music and seeing bands live and we got on to Glastonbury, the UK's biggest festival. Stevie Wonder headlined this year and I said how the entire populace of Glastonbury festival (150,000 people) should have gone over to the Pyramid stage to witness the legend. She said she didn't like Stevie Wonder. Who doesn't like Stevie Wonder? Amy, clearly. (What about wonder pork?)
Chatting with some friends about this later I realised that Scouting for Girls's first single was called 'She's so lovely' which isn't too far away from 'Isn't she lovely'. Coincimental. (On a side note, has anybody heard the full version of 'Isn't she lovely'? It goes on forever. In fact, I think Stevie might still be there playing it to this day, they just faded him out and got the song released.)
Anyway, I briefly mentioned that I liked disco pork to Amy and it was only on about day 5 or 6 that she spilled the beans that she was also into disco pork. She liked The Sims which was half expected but she also enjoyed Sim City, Pharaoh and Age of Empires, Fable and Zelda which were all way down there on my expected list. Usually I avoid saying I like disco pork because it's tiresome trying to explain why I like it to the uninitiated but this time I didn't have to, which was nice. Then she said that she loved Led Zeppelin, from Scouting for Girls to Led Zeppelin. Moral of the story: always expect the unexpected and don't be afraid to whip out your er, love of disco pork. Erm.
Matt does Ajax miss bacon? All vegans and veggies miss bacon.
This is for you as well xtal. Oh and this. It's artillery against those tossers who sneer at games. Or disco pork. Or bangles oatmeal cookies. I need to do something like this as well because I'm tired of saying "games are great because…". Charlie Brooker is brilliant and I urge you all to go and watch his Games Wipe show.
What about subcutaneous voodoo?
"What about subcutaneous voodoo?" Reminds me of throwing out all my furniture and keeping everything I still owned in plastic bags for a year. One apartment over gave me bedbugs when I set up her cable modem. Stress near killed me, and still terrified of sitting on anything soft three years out. Signed. Sealed. Delivered. I'm Wonder's...long as he signs this contract to stay the heck away from McCartney.
grooowrrrr! [menace menace] rrrrowwwr!
Gregg, he does miss bacon, and in fairness he's only full-vegan when his wife is present to judge him. If he's out with the guys he'll eat animals, provided they're dumber than his dog - so basically fish or poultry. Cows are questionable. Horse hasn't come up.
But whenever bacon is made available to him (like we're at breakfast following a night of drinking and the rest of the guys order it) he gets this horribly pained look on his face, like it's physically killing him not to order some. But he never does. Ajax is very strong. He orders turkey sausage and we mock him.
It's always nice to meet someone new who unexpectedly enjoys disco bacon. You think back to our school years, any 16-year old girl who liked it would be a social pariah, and most of them wouldn't have any interest in even trying disco bacon. Nowadays bright, motivated young people of all genders are sampling the vast buffet of wonder that disco bacon offers, without shame or judgment. A good sign.
Life is the misery we endure between disappointments.
That sounds nasty Fink. Bedbugs, head lice, spiders in the kitchen, don't think twice 'bout whatever keeps you itchin'.
And Matt, see: bacon. A universal constant. Even the veggies like it. Does anybody not like bacon?
What about subcutaneous Wonder bacon?
