I honestly don't know if the discs will explode. I'm afraid to find out. The last time I played it was before my Alienware beast, so I couldn't tell you from personal experience. The game however, is brilliant.

Matt, I know you rated Max Payne 2 but is it and it's predecessor worth my time? I've always heard so much about them but have never been quite sure.

The original Sanitarium does have issues with the cd-roms exploding inside drives that spin the discs too fast.  I think there are free utilities out there that can be used to restrain the max speed of cd-rom drives but haven't personally used them.

I admit to going temporarily insane also with this holiday steam sale.  I think I spent around $150 (yikes) in total snapping up great deals left and right!  From indie games like Braid, Blueberry Garden, Ben There Dam That, Machinarium to commercial releases like The Void, The Witcher, Zeno Clash, Ankh 2&3 I just couldn't resist.  Shoot, I even shelled out $50 to buy the Eidos collector pack which ought to keep me busy for most of 2010 all by itself!!  I curse my weakness for buying games at great prices.

Worth your time, Gregg, worth your time. I love those games. Play for the story, stay for the gameplay. Just forgive the first Max Payne its unpleasant dream sequences. Remedy's creative director Markus Maki, once told me that they'd made changes to Max Payne 2 largely because they "didn't want to torture their fans."

I'd buy both again at full price right now, but if you have a line on on-sale copies, you'd be crazy to let them pass you by... get the PC versions, though. God didn't intend us to play shooters on consoles.

I curse my weakness for buying games at great prices.

Right there with you, my friend. Final damage for me? The Void, AI War, Torchlight, Serious Sam HD, Gratuitous Space Battles, and The Witcher. God damn you Steam!

Life is the misery we endure between disappointments.

I'm tempted to buy Torchlight. The demo was very fun, a super-polished dungeon crawl experience.

Diablo III is taking too long.

I hate to keep resurrecting this thread but Steam won't quit with their damn deals!

This time it's Company of Heroes for $4.99

I'm by no means a huge fan of the real-time strategy genre ... I've played the classics: Warcraft, Red Alert, Starcraft, Homeworld, and some of the newer 4X stuff: Gal Civ, Sins of a Solar Empire ... but am definitely not an avid follower of it. That said, I've heard too many good things about CoH to pass it up for the price of a couple bags of Doritos.

FYI: GoGamer has Company of Heroes on sale now for $3.9 plus tax and shipping.  Steam though has the whole trilogy on sale.

I got really pissed off with Company of Heroes purely on the basis of one particular situation where I had two engineers sat behind two tanks that were taking heavy fire. Eventually the tanks started smoking and I sat there thinking "will those fucking engineers automatically repair them or am I going to have to tell them to? Because if I am, I'm going to be switching this off. I'm not a babysitter." Needless to say they both sat there doing sod all as the tanks got pummelled. I really, really, really, really hate strategy games that require me to nanny/micro every unit, taking away the impetus on the actual strategy.

It's the one thing I adore about AI Wars. You can set engineers to repair units automatically and that's it; they get on with it as they are supposed to leaving you to concentrate on the strategy. The combat units even automatically attack the enemies they are strongest against when confronted with a fleet of mixed units, this again allows you to concentrate on the strategy.

Another incident on CoH had a squad of soldiers unable to flank a heavy gun emplacement because of an indestructible picket fence that they couldn't vault. Ridiculous!

Anyway, I'm really finicky about RTSs and their supposed strategy. Most just devolve into a haphazard micro-managing click-fest. This applies to Homeworld as well which I recently started up again after it went on the back burner when it was released. I simply couldn't stomach my ships not automatically docking to repair themselves when they were idle. Even C&C medics did this!!

With this in mind I tend to prefer the slower pacing of TBS these days. Gal Civ I haven't played properly yet but I've heard nothing but good stuff about it. I bought that for £1.20 off Impulse which is less than half a pint!

Completely agree with you, Gregg.

Most strategy games I never last more than an hour because I just can't stomach the micromanagement. Especially when versus humans and not computers ... it devolves into who has drunk the most Bawls Guarana and whose hands are twitchiest. Some of my most exasperating gaming moments have come during matches of some Blizzard RTS where I go in largely thinking strategy and balance tactics...only to be met three minutes later with a zergling/peon army, forcing me to start clicking on all my idiot minions and instructing them not to lay down and die.

That said, I will give CoH's campaign a shot and see how I do with it. If it's anything like World in Conflict I think I can enjoy focusing on the more tantalizing aspects of battles and forgo the click-fest-ing.

Oh, and sans Alec Baldwin's sweet cooing in my ear.

Yeah I bought it because my version of Enemy Unknown is a bit flaky and thanks to the DOSbox setup I've managed to get it working like a treat. I never did get round to playing XCOM Apocalypse so that's a bonus as well!

£2!! Nearly as mad as the Psychonauts offer, that was absolutely crackers.

EDIT: How are you doing with CoH xtal?

The latest crazy: Left 4 Dead 2$20.09

http://store.steampowered.com/app/550/

The game just received the $20 price-chop a few weeks ago, and now they've lopped another $10 off. Irresistible, I must confess.

I also hear that Trine is good. It is on for $5.00 right now. There is a demo too.

Spotted that earlier in the week and I'm tempted, but bugger me if I haven't got enough on my plate as it is. I bought Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis back in the day on the Amiga from a market and one of the disks was corrupt so I couldn't get past one of the first bits. I was well pissed off.

You could buy it cheap and then just wait until you have time to play it. Fate of Atlantis is one of the true classics of adventure gaming.

Really, Jen? Much better than The Last Crusade?

I remember that was one of the earliest computer games I ever played; it was quite a challenge at the time: I was probably 7 or something close to that…never did finish it. What I remember most was the grail diary that came in the box…I loved that book and all its faux coffee stains.

I own Loom and The Fate of Atlantis from purchasing one of those Big Box LucasArts adventure packs that came out in the 90s but have never played them. I really should, shouldn't I?

Yeah, Loom is a fun game too. Fate of Atlantis and The Last Crusade are pretty comparable in quality, in my opinion. Good games, all.

Spike must buy Oblivion. Even if fantasy (but you can play as a human! what's the real diff between elves/orcs & mutants/ghouls?) is not your choice. At $8.50 (including all DLCs + expansion) that's like one centime per day. A crime not to own the game at that price.

I considered this morning, then went to eat.  I considered at noon, then did some chores.  I considered at 2pm and realized that I hadn't been over to the DARK SIDE (Windows) for the 3 weeks since finishing F3.  All those updates to be done - Anti-virus and spyware software, Microsoft security updates, probably a couple of Mac for PC updates.  Then too, I'm 3 weeks behind on computer scans.  Oh, who has time to download Oblivion, even at such a steal????????????

(OH, ok, you talked me into it, Yap.)
