Any game viewed on a 15 foot TV would be scary.  Zombies with five foot eyeballs? Nostrils the size of bathtubs? "Scary" is hardly adequate. [Image Can Not Be Found]

Congratulations on winning the Tap-Repeatedly Steam Holiday Sale Contest of Shame, Jarrod, by way of the abdication of the Official Winner and the fact that you endured a massive flood and a monster cyclone in the same week and a half. Scaring the pants off you with zombies is the least we could do.

This is a good thing, because at least until you hone your skills, I'll no longer be the worst one we play with. Last time I got the entire team killed because a Skype call interrupted a momentous battle. Most of the time what I lack in actual skill I make up for in accidental friendly fire. Gregg is very patient with me. Finkbug less so (I haven't forgotten the chainsaw incident, Fink). Armand is "nice," always, which leads back to our maybe-he's-the-devil postulation. Xtal I still haven't had a chance to play with. There's this silent savior named Madman who none of us actually know and who doesn't use a mic, so he just sort of swoops in, saves our asses, and types smiley faces. Luke is Gregg's GF's brother and seemed genuinely hurt when I got the whole team killed last time... for which I cannot blame him. If we add Jarrod to our group, not only will we be a truly multinational L4D Team, the Battle of the Accents on voice chat will be even more epic.

Gregg: "I'm checking the urinal."

Armand: "The what??"

Gregg: "The yoooor-eye-nal."

Armand: "The what?"

Luke: "Cock it, you know mate, the loo."

Me: "The what?"

Xtal: "I'm running oot here to check on aboot this, eh?"

Me: "What?"

etc etc etc. No wonder Madman and Fink don't speak. They're too busy laughing at us offline.

Life is the misery we endure between disappointments.

That is more or less how it went... except the Canadian part of it.

Hey, I wanted to finally kill something with a chainsaw. You're what stood still long enough for me to draw a bead. [Image Can Not Be Found]

That said, I was darn excited to read Jarrod got L4D2 instead of Barbie's Magic Horsey Dressup Adventure Kingdom Expansion Pack 23: Pearls (this Lakerz deserves and I'm half tempted to create it for the purpose).

My heart sang. I AM NO LONGER ROCHELLE!

There may have been dancing.

It's true, I added the Canadian for the sheer comedy joy. Wait until we add Jarrod! It'll be the same except for

Jarrod: "Gillie! Fosters! Jackeroo!"

Armand: "What?"

Jarrod: "Gallipoli! Oi! G'day! Olivia Newton John!"

Me: "What?"

Gregg can't win because he likes the work of Ridley Scott.

I think that was me. But actually, I hate most of his movies, exceptions for: Blade Runner, Thelma & Louise, Alien. It was the Blade Runner thing that pissed you off. "Boring and pretentious" you said. "Just like me" you said.

That was me as well. I don't think I've ever seen any movie by Ridley Scott that I've hated or even strongly disliked. Blade Runner, Thelma & Louise, Alien, American Gangster and Gladiator I loved, history and realism be damned. As far as modern war films go I thought Black Hawk Down was a much better film than The Hurt Locker and that was universally ejaculated over by critics for reasons which completely escape me. I hated that film. I've felt more tension taking a shit than watching some smug arsehole diffuse bombs and totally disregard command for two hours. Legend was worth watching just to see Tim Curry as the devil. Kingdom of Heaven was pretty weak thanks in no small part to Borlando Bloom not being able to carry it and apart from that, I don't think I've seen any other Scott movies. Oh yeah, Hannibal, that wasn't bad.

@Jarrod: Our L4D shenanigans are rarely planned; it's usually a case of a handful of us being logged in and somebody saying 'fancy a thrash on L4D? Ask about'. I will add you the next time I log in 😉 We're yet to get 8 of us online and available at the same time though we've nearly had 7, and once had 6 which was great because we could have 3 aside versus. Fun times.

I share your mystification over the splooging on Hurt Locker (liked it well enough but best film nod? then again Avatar was up and that was nuts) but it had one truly great scene. The PTS soldier overwhelmed by the cereal aisle hits hard for anyone who's ever had an anxiety attack.

Curious, I asked a few soldiers who've had terrifying combat duty. All three hated the movie and loved that scene. It'd be interesting to know if recently released long term inmates are similarly overwhelmed by gaudy consumer faux choice. I've none to ask.

Yeah funny you mention that scene actually because that was the only one that twanged any sort of emotional chord with me. Seeing him stood there surrounded by cellophane sealed safety after living so close to death had a real punch to it unlike any other scene in the film. You could see his indifference over so much choice for such seemingly menial items; you could see him wanting out, wanting to go back to get his only fix. He was still an arsehole though.

It reminded me of a similar moment in Lost in Translation when Bill Murray receives a load of carpet tile samples in the mail from his wife.

The strength of the scene is shown by the different colors we used describing it.

Indifference. He needs his fix. My lens was coiling panic given a surfeit of choice.

All three soldiers said they felt both. An illogical need to escape into real danger where their pumping adrenaline made sense.

My girlfriend just mentioned The Deerhunter as well. Same thing.

The Hurt Locker was so bad it put some heavy metal over the arsehole getting off the chopper and walking back into the fray as it segued into the credits. BADASS.

And it begins:

I've picked up Drakensang 2 and its DLC Philistine's Secret (something close to that). The only reason I didn't pop for Drakensang the First is because I can see the box winking at me by just turning around in my chair... and it's not currently on sale; although it's a lovely price point of less than 7 ducats. We can do better than that. [Image Can Not Be Found]

Day 2. So far, I'm at:

Lead & Gold: Gangs of the Wild West - £1.05
BIT.TRIP.RUNNER  - £1.75
Shatter - £1.75
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic - £1.74
Grand Theft Auto: Classics Pack - £4.99
Just Cause 2 - £3.49

10 games for £14.77. I've added another £25 to my Steam account too to cover the rest of the sale, and I'm going to try and stick within that budget as best I can. The way I see it, the £40 I'm allowing myself to spend on the Steam sale is what I would normally pay for 1 new PS3 day one release anyway per month, so if £40 buys me a barrow full of games instead of just one then I'll have done well out of this.

KOTOR and BIT.TRIP.RUNNER are very much intended purchases. I was close to biting on both of those prior to the sale since getting my PC so they're good purchases. Lead & Gold came recommended to me, especially so given the price, and I've always heard of Shatter being incredibly highly regarded on PSN, so I had to bite at this very un-PSN price point. GTA is very much a nostalgia fuelled impulse buy (I can never have enough Vice City) and Just Cause 2 sounds fun for less than £4. Bring on tomorrow.

Also, is anyone else getting the "Servers Busy" error message alot? Or experiencing slower download speed's when installing games?

I'm going to assume these are both because Steam is getting hammered but.. just wondered if anyone else was experiencing problems. Particularly with download speeds. I've just got my rig set up in the back bedroom for the first time and want to try and eliminate the possibility that it might be my connection that's slow, as appose to Steam..

I got the "servers busy" message this morning when the new deals rolled over, but I've not gotten it since then. I also don't actually download the games until I'm ready to play them... by then, the sale is but a memory.

I am contemplating Hamilton's Great Adventure... I wouldn't be able to play it until I upgraded Windoze, but what makes me think I'd be ready to play it in the near future anyway? [Image Can Not Be Found]

Great. Drakensang 2 is on sale. I was hoping it would be, but forgot about the sale till I checked in here. We just got back from San Francisco, where we found an apartment for my daughter, not an easy task. Maybe I'll check to see if there is something else I could use. I am downloading now, but it will be sometime tomorrow before D2 is playable.

Mat, I am experiencing slower than usual download speeds, sometimes only 1/4 of usual.
