So the recent flurry of discussion on Dark Souls prompted me to start a new game on the PS3. I never got comfortable with the PC version (controller + office chair feels weird to me), so an unnecessary $14.99 investment got me the Artorias of the Abyss expansion, and it was off to the races.

This game is so interesting. I may have moaned a couple times about gamer guilt - especially in my line of work, I often feel I don't "play games enough," or "play often enough," inevitably leading to questions about whether I'm losing interest in the hobby. You know, like when you get a headache and assume it's head cancer. Then I start up Dark Souls and it's like putting on comfy gloves. I played much of the weekend and all of last night, even putting off a start of Rome 2. No regrets. It's not me that plays less, it's the games that deserve less of my time.

Anyway, I've started Dark Souls on a couple of occasions. On my PC playthrough I got to Anor Londo; a few PS3 efforts saw me get variously past the Gargoyles and/or to the Depths before I sort of drifted off. This time, though, I want to play the new content (it will be a good barometer to see how I react to Dark Souls II), and as I told xtal last night, man, reading all the posts on this forum have had a profound effect on the way I play the game. I'm almost - almost - pretty good, compared to the bumbling incompetence that marked my first go-round. I pay attention to all equipment stats rather than just physical protection and damage. I know what Poise is. I'm trying - not always succeeding, but trying - to keep my level down. And what grinding I do is grinding with a purpose. It may seem like a couple hours of repetition to the non-expert, but to someone who knows the game, my decisions and behaviors are based in similar knowledge. That alone is totally different than my first experience with DkS.

I'm halfway through Sen's Fortress, at maybe the 20 hour mark. Much of that time was the aforementioned planned grinding. I intentionally built a Sorcerer, like my first Dark Souls character, but this time around I'm actually using magic. Following various Botch or xtal advice I was quick to upgrade a Pyromancy flame, I raced to New Londo right off to get the free Fire Keeper soul, and though at level 44 I'm hardly keeping it under control, my leveling is structured according to a plan.

Sen's lit me up when I first visited. I knew it was coming but was surprised by the scale of the pounding. My first visit wasn't for progress but to get the Covetous Gold Serpent Ring, which I planned to take off to Blighttown for some Large Titanite Shard farming. This took a lot of time. My Longsword +10 and +3-+6-ish Black Leather set couldn't hold their own against the snake men. But I endured and got what I needed, then spent an hour helping folks with Quelaag and clearing out leeches in Blighttown, carrying off 55 large shards and a hozillion souls that I reinvested not in levels but in everything the Pyromancy trainer down there offered. My Flame is +15 and I've got two copies of practically every major spell, useful since I miss a lot, and I'm slowly building to six attunement slots. I tend to swap back and forth between Sorcery and Pyromancy, and for the first time I finally understand the balance between miracles, magic, and pyromancy. I'm loving every minute of it. Well, except the initial Blighttown descent. That went more poorly than usual. Also I had to summon help to deal with an invader in the Depths, and then there the help was so I thought "let's just get Gaping Dragon out of the way," which had the unexpected negative of making me miss the Knight Kirk invasion since I hadn't actually done the Depths at that point. So.

But once I got the serpent ring I had it under control. Time in Blighttown got me the shards I needed, and fifteen minutes of the Undead Parish with that ring on netted me the one tool I've been really dying for - a Balder Side Sword. My return to Sen's Fortress was night and day difference with a +10 BSS and hardened leather over my old kit. You can't go wrong with the Balder Side Sword, people. Though now that I'm back in Sen's and found it for the first time, I gotta say, I could get used to the Shotel.

Also, weirdly, immediately after I beat the Bell Gargoyles I tried to put down a summon sign, but for some reason I invaded another world. I'm sure it was the White Soapstone I had out - that was the first thing I looked at when "invading another world" came up, but invade I did. A bug? I don't know.

Talk to me about Raw items. Also about ways to maximize my build without continuing to level, something I've already done more than I intended when I started out. I keep Hardened Leather plus an upgraded Pyromancer set for Blighttown; I swap between Wolf, Cloranthy, Steel Protection, Covetous Gold Serpent, Rusted Iron, and Bellowing Dragoncrest as needed. I need to become more amazing, and to become more amazing I need your wisdom. Also, the Artorias content - you have to be through Anor Londo? Past O&S? Then just kill the Hydra and talk to Dusk?

Steerpike, you need the Lordvessel and you also have to kill the golem at Duke's Archives. Xtal described the process in detail on p 29 of this thread. I got past Artorius and then the Chained Prisoner, who was easy with pyromancy. The Chasm of the Abyss is not a nice place. Reminds me of the Catacombs. I am currently approaching the fog door of Manus.

Alright, now we're talking!  Don't get too hung up on the soul level thing.  If you have a particular stat goal then go for it.  I remember back in the earlier days of this thread we talked about keeping it low, but there's really no need if you've got nothing else to spend souls on.  It cuts down on invasions I guess, but that's not really reason enough.  Don't feel bad about springing for the PS3 DLC.  I love the look of the PC version, but it just seems much less populated than the PS3.  At least for coop.  Finding someone to summon can be a big pain.  Also too much cracking going on.

You hit the "i meant to coop but invaded instead" bug.  Happens occasionally.  Goes the other way too.  Hilarity often ensues.

I wouldn't worry about missing Kirk.  There's nothing he leaves that you'd likely care about.  His armor is OK.  People mainly like it b/c it looks wicked though.

Balder Side (Swag) Sword is indeed awesome.  It's perfect for a lightly clad Sorcerer.

OK forget Raw.  It's just not potent enough as far as I can tell.  What are your stats?  With that BSS at +15 and a high Dex and maybe some resin buffs you will be bringing the pain.  If you want to keep Str and Dex at a modest level, then you may think about an elemental route.  Chaos is great, but you'd need to be carrying around vulnerable humanity.  Plus red titanite is kind of a pain to acquire in bulk.  There's always Lightning, or Magic.  But they can't compare to pure physical damage.

Your best bet for getting more powerful is to get yourself to the Duke's Archives and free Logan (again).  You don't have to defeat Seath for this, but you of course need the Lordvessel.  Then of course there are the dark magics, which are extremely powerful.  That's DLC territory.  You'll need to make your way to around where Pokey is now.

I've been playing a lot of Dark Souls lately too.  Just reading about it brings back the urge.  I just love trying out different things.  I've been thinking about how much I've relied on the help of others to make it anywhere in this game.  Without all those anonymous people laboriously figuring things out and passing on the knowledge, I probably wouldn't know half of what I do.  I plan to rely much less on this for Dark Souls 2.

I spent part of the morning on the wiki and I really love reading them. The amount of effort others put into understanding the complexities really makes for fascinating content, and in most cases you have ample warning (and thus time to stop) if you're reading something that contains a spoiler. In a way, the wiki is part of the experience for me. Unbelievable how much stuff I'd miss, or be utterly ignorant of, were it not for those pages. Of course, there's a lot to be said for being truly alone, not turning to a resource like that. More power to anyone who's got the willpower!

My stats are a little more even than the previous character - I'm at SL 48 having just entered Anor Londo, and I plan to hold there since co-op is still in range. I see plenty of summon signs and haven't had any trouble getting summoned, but I know (according to the wiki!) I'm at the upper SL ceiling for Anor Londo, at least insofar as being confident that others of my level will be around to help. Naturally, I could still use about 15 soul levels.

Stats... Int 27, Dex 18, Vitality 12, Attunement 23... that's what I remember off the top of my head. Someone named "turdburglerrr" dropped a +5 Enchanted Longsword before Quelaag, which was nice of them and almost enough to make me forgive their decision to call themselves turdburglerrr. I was looking at the damage today and it's way higher than my +10 Balder sword, so I'm working to ascend a spare up to that point. Blue Titanite is never where you need it to be.

I'd forgotten how hard those Anor Londo sentinels hit.

Hard. They hit hard.

stupid hard-hitting sentinels.

ANYWAY, it's time for some Rome 2. With luck I'll have the Lordvessel by the weekend, and be enjoying the DLC. Honestly, how bad could a place called "The Chasm of the Abyss" really be? I bet it's delightful. Pokey, you big alarmist. ;)

Steerpike, I was getting lots of summons in Anor Londo at soul level 70, so I think you have no worries if you raise yours. As for the Chasm, it's a great place...just so dark! I'm standing outside the fog door to Manus wondering if I really want to go in.

Don't be lured by the siren call of that +5 Enchanted!  It's split damage, and evil I tell you.  Evil!

OK seriously, weapons which do more than one kind of damage can seem better on the surface, but most times they can't compare to a +15 with sufficient Str or Dex scaling.  Still, you'll likely be bumping Int up even more so it's not a bad deal necessarily.  My preference is +15 physical, unless I'm intentionally trying to make a lower level character.  In that case elemental is usually the way to go.

If you can live with that lower Vit (very do-able), then I'd say bump Dex to 40 and Int to 40+.  Add to Endurance as needed for mobility.  Leave everything else alone.  But you gotta do what feels right for Steerpike.  The beauty of it is, whether you're just interested in roleplaying or maximizing dmg and such, you can be successful.

I agree with Pokey, you should be able to find help in Anor Londo for at least SL 50+.  That wiki info is one of the things which doesn't (and can't) stay up to date as the coop community matures.  The cool thing is that I still run into new players regularly.

Doeeet Pokey!

I haven't fought Manleet yet. Can I do Manus before Manleet? Any problem with that? Or rather, can I do Manleet after Manus?

So I decided to leave Anor Londo and zip down into the Catacombs to grab the Rite of Kindling - it'll be useful for the Painted World - and this swinehole invades me, waits until I go to meet Blacksmith Vamos, and (rather cleverly) puts himself between the two of us. The Divine Winged Spear +5 may be a great anti-skeletool, but poking precision isn't its strong suit. So naturally I stab this clown and my spear goes right through his sternum, out his back, and into Blacksmith Vamos, who took exception to it. Apparently his concern that I'd wreck his focus was well-founded. So after the phantom kills me I have to leave the Catacombs, climb up to the Bell Tower, and pay 25K for absolution or else my favorite tomb-living tentacle-faced undead artisan attacks every time I drop down there.

All in all it was a pretty clever play on the part of Under_Taker401, which in no way dissuaded me from indicting his clever ass from hell to breakfast.

Oh great. Glad to hear it. Wow, I really messed up the dragon’s name.

Yes and for that he will punish you!

Ha ha you got trolled pretty successfully Steerpike.  My favorite story of trolling the trollers in Catacombs was the time I pulled a Patches on an invader by flipping a bridge lever and sending him to his death.  I must be getting corrupted, because I'm starting to appreciate the lengths some will go to troll people in this game.

But don't indict him!  Indictment is a sign of respect shown to a good PvPer.  It means more invasions for him.  Indict the ones who kill you in a good, fair fight.  Best to just ignore the ones that hack you off.

Haha, I have always treated indictments the way I'd react to them (as in, "holy shit, not another invasion, please,") rather than the way the community takes them. Good to know!

Though in fairness, this guy was pretty gentlemanly. He saw that I was talking to Vamos and waited, he bowed, he even let me Estus up and swap weapons before starting. So maybe he did deserve some compliments. It really was a pretty smart thing to do - not as smart as flipping one of the spike bridges, though.

Most invaders aren't particularly sporting in my experience. They make rude gestures and attack on sight. I suck so bad at PVP that I really dread the whole process, ironic since I love the cooperation aspect so much. I am, it would seem, a lover rather than a fighter.

I stand corrected then.  I've seen all kinds.  Some really want to troll you, but somehow don't come off as being jerks, if that makes any sense.  The over-powered ones who just want to prey on weaker characters and then boast about it are the annoying ones.  There are a fair amount out there who do just want a good fight.

It's really two different games in many ways.  You can have a really good PvE character who isn't very effective at PvP.  Also, the tactics differ greatly.  Parrying for instance.  Parrying in-game enemies, say Black Knights, is pretty easy after a bit of practice.  Parrying other people is an entirely different matter.  The timing is completely different.  I suck at it, but am trying to get better.  Once you get some Dark Magics you'll be able to punish many of those punks more often.  Pull out your crystal catalyst, wear Dusk's crown and Bellowing ring and they won't know what hit 'em.

Still haven't met up with Manus. I am looking for some help but all I ever see is invaders, quite a few of them. I just check my soapstone and quit the game at that point since I have cleared the path from the bonfire to Manus. I assume I am at the best place to summon, the bonfire in the dungeon. I tried near the fog door and no luck there. Maybe the elevator near Sif.

Well that was some jolly co-op a few nights ago, Steerpike & Botch. I really love the Painted World more each time I go there. It's top 5 areas for me certainly, up there with Anor Londo.

Have you finished off O&S yet, S?

I should be available for any summoning you require on your character since I have characters at many levels; incl. 55, 82, 95 and beyond. So there shouldn't be any range that I can't get to you at with at least one of my many undead adventurers.

Pokey, did you ever go toe to toe with Manus? (And did you have any wolf-y assistance?)

We had a lot of fun with that co-op, thanks for all your help gentlemen.

I haven't finished O&S yet because...

...

Well, I decided to drag my PC out here to the living room, do a test run of moving the Capital out here. See?

steerpike_MediaPC.jpg

It's working pretty well except I can't get my TV to use a normal resolution (attention TV: 1804x1010 is not normal). What does this have to do with O&S? Well, now that I have everything temporarily set up out here, I can more easily play the PC version and capture screenshots and video. Which I'd like to do for the Prepare to Diaries. So I spent the afternoon in my pajamas (hence the plaid flannel knees) getting Puck, my spunky redheaded Pyromancer lady, up to snuff. She's... exactly at the Painted World.

So stay tuned. : )

I have to ask: how is your seventh (seventh, right?) Xbox 360 that original big ol' white guy. You don't have the sleeker, slimmer...Slim?

Sigh, I still have a lot of captured footage for the video diaries I was doing (probably 5-6 episodes worth) but I have not been in the mood to muster up worthwhile commentary.

I never did get to fight Manus. I tried to find help at different places, but every time an invader would show up within minutes, once after only 5 seconds. It wasn't any better at other times of the day. I have never seen anything like this. With Artoias I found plenty of signs and no invaders. I never did see a summoning sign for Manus, only invaders. I finally just used my bow and killed him from a distance from outside the fog door. It was very discouraging and I haven't played since. frown

The seventh lasted a good long time. So long I thought the curse was broken. If memory serves, I got that one shortly after Alan Wake came out, which would be... 2010 I think. It was what Microsoft sent me through their warranty system, which is probably why it wasn't one of the nicer ones.

No idea what made it give up the ghost, but it still sits there because a hole would look funny. Unless the cubby itself is cursed, it's the future home of my Playstation 4.

Pokey: I'm sorry you've been having so much trouble. I myself have rediscovered Dark Souls after a long break. I just need to pick one platform and stick with it. Give yourself some time off, that can heal lots of wounds. :)

Pokey, I don't think it was mentioned in here before, but summons for Manus are typically found right at the Oolacile Township bonfire; I've seen maybe one sign outside the boss fog ever - forgot to mention this in here earlier, sorry! That would be why you had difficulty finding any.
