I'm in Blighttown.  Entered via the Depths.  I'm still on the platforms, but I can appreciate Steerpike's comparison to the Valley of Defilement, with added poo.  Those ghoulish things are pretty frightening.  One of them chewed on my head but I survived.  And those big hulking things.  Do they respawn?

I'm no help to you Pokey.  You're too far ahead of me.  Good hunting.

My post has seemed to disappear. I was at the first bonfire in Anor Londo and killed the Giant Knights. I've moved on, killing two Gargoyles and some ninja assassins and have arrived at the second bonfire.

Is it worth it to do The Painted World? I hate to mess with the toxin.

Once again the system may or may not be back to normal, we're watching it - the CAPTCHA is off and everything else just needed to be thumped like that scene in Empire Strikes Back where Han thumps the Millennium Falcon and it comes back on (for a while). Keep me posted if you have trouble.

@Pokey: with that Fire Claymore of yours, the Painted World may not be so bad toxin-wise at all. There's a sort of infected zombie thing that explodes and toxifies you when you kill it, unless you burn it first. So whereas I was becoming toxic literally every time, you'll probably be able to avoid most incidents. The thing is, though, it's time in the Painted World that nets you the most souls, so doing the run from the single campfire many times will still be key. Remember you MUST complete the Painted World in order to leave; there's n backtracking and no other way out, so you're stuck there until you get through. The only way around this is to retrieve the Lordvessel before you visit, then you can warp out whenever you like.

@Botch: the hulks in Blighttown to respawn, yes, but the blowdart snipers don't. It's a small blessing, but worth it. Good luck down there! Don't drink the water!

This is actually incorrect. I had the Lordvessel when I visited the painted world and if you select warp from the bonfire it will tell you "you cannot warp from this bonfire, it is cut off from the others." So indeed, the only way out of the painted world is through. When you do get to the end, think hard if you want to take on Priscilla; I'd say of all the bosses I've faced so far she's been the toughest. I couldn't defeat her without summoned help. I believe you can get a special dagger from cutting off her tail, but if you don't care to have that, or her soul-- which can craft a special scythe-- then you can simply heed her pleas and leave peacefully.

The choice is yours!

I'm going to try and get through without getting toxified. I only have one or two remedies and I hate to travel back to the merchant for more. I do have fire spells, so maybe that will do.

I don't plan to kill Priscilla.

Pokester, if you're going, don't rush through. The Painted World is a great place to spend a few hours good and toxic, fighting fairly easy foes, and collecting bazillions of souls. Toxicity is undone by camping at a bonfire, so if you become toxic, just hurry back and sleep. Once you have a feel for the place's layout it's very clear how to open up a shortcut that will make it possible to enter and leave the Painted World within 2 minutes. This is a place to grind for a few million souls, not to zip through. I wasn't exaggerating in the Diaries when I said I gained 15 levels there. Total time in the region: about six hours.

Xtal - thanks for correcting that. I wasn't sure as I typed it, but for some reason my brain had associated that "cut off from the other fires" warning to the Duke's Archive.

It looks like it would be easy to return here. I had no problem with toxin. One of the Crow Demons attacked me as I was perusing my inventory and I was knocked down below the circular tower where the dragon appears. Didn't seem to be any way out, so I jumped over a low wall and landed below and found my way out. The wheel skeletons gave me fits and now I am trying to find my way through the tunnels. I may try fighting Priscilla if I have any health left.

The Duke's Archives bonfire (post-Seath encounter #1) and the painted world's are the only two where I've seen that "cut off from the others" message.

Pokey, if you go back down the well to where the bonewheel skeletons are I believe you can find a key to open a shortcut (or maybe just an alternate area through the back of that church-ish area) as well as a particular pyromancy or sorcery spell ... I can't remember for certain. It's confusing down there though, quite a maze.

I got out of the maze and into the church and then decided to try my luck against Priscilla. I didn't last long and found that if I attacked her, I wouldn't get another chance to leave peacefully. I finally summoned someone but he wasn't any better than me and I died again. Will try again tomorrow.

Apparently I need to stop putting off the Tomb of Giants and New Londo. I warped to the Sunlight Altar last night, dropping my summon sign on the off chance that it maybe a spot to do so for taking out the Hellkite Dragon. This was my plan to see how others would go about taking it down, because even now that I'm in the soul level 90s he still stomps all over and toasts me. Well, I was summoned, but not to fight the dragon. I was summoned to fight the Bell Gargoyles. That's right, I'm now being summoned by people who are in NG+!

This is a sure sign that I need to toughen up and venture into new places to satiate the Lordvessel!

I've had some interesting experiences over the past few days. The bad first: waltzing around Anor Londo, as you do, I was merrily invading the guilty-- and promptly being destroyed four out of five times-- until one time where I was taken aback by my invading appearance: I was a red phantom. Now, when you invade as a Darkmoon Blade there are two messages you will receive:

"Invading another world as a spirit of vengeance." -- You receive this when you manually invade someone using the Blue Eye Orb.

"Invading another world as a dark spirit." -- You receive this one when you are wearing the Darkmoon Covenant Ring and are summoned at the whim of the Dark Sun Gwyndolin.

I received the latter message this time, which I had become used to; it is not the "dark spirit" in the sense of forcibly invading the world of the innocent (or rather, the not guilty), just that you've been summoned by your covenant leader; this apparently also is what Forest Hunters see, and they too are blue phantoms.

So anyway, to my surprise I appeared as a red phantom and thought it was odd, but it must be a glitch, because I didn't use a cracked red eye orb, nor did I use the red sign soapstone. I figured it was just a glitch. Well, yes and no. Yes: it was a glitch; but no: it was not just a glitch of what colour I was; in the game's eyes I had truly invaded as a red phantom. How am I sure of this? Because when the host and their summoned white phantom dispatched me I lost all 150,000 souls and 10 humanity in my possession.

When I respawned in my own world with 0 humanity and 0 souls my jaw hit the floor. That was about three days ago; I got on with it, went back to the Duke's Archives to gain back humanity by lending my summons and went about my business. Put this horrible and unfair glitch (or did I deserve it?) out of my mind.

Fast forward to yesterday, I'm visiting the Giant Blacksmith to make a few upgrades, and when I cross the bridge from his room back to the Chamber of the Princess I decide to rotate my camera and take in the view of Anor Londo. What do I see in the far, far distance: a faint green glow, the one you see hovering over your bloodstain. No, it can't be I thought. I rushed across the main walkway to retrieve it, lo and behold it was indeed my 10 humanity and 150,000 souls. Phew! The best part was that I had completely forgotten about it, but luckily in the interim I hadn't died once. So even though you lose all souls and humanity while invading as a red phantom, a bloodstain appears at the spot you invaded from. This game plays with my emotions, I tell you!

In other news: the Slumbering Dragoncrest Ring (found in Sen's Fortress) rocks. It's pretty much Dark Souls' Thief Ring. I can literally run up behind an enemy up until back-stab range and they don't notice me. If you haven't already, try this ring!

Further updates to come on my Tomb of Giants progress.

I need to go get that ring. I loved the Thief Ring. Meanwhile, I still need to defeat Priscilla. I think I may fight the Undead Dragon on the bridge and maybe that would make the trip to Priscilla easier.

Priscilla is dead and I did it by myself. Killing the Undead Dragon did make the trip easier. I'll head back later to harvest some souls. I would like to get to the Blacksmith to upgrade my weapons. Also need that Thiefy type ring.

I have another invasion story.  I was playing around with another build (I know but I can't help myself).  I'm taking a liking to back-stabbing and I wanted to try out a pyro/thief type.  Anyway, the point is that I was pretty low level and had just defeated Taurus Demon with help from two summons (makes these experiments go so much faster).  While talking to Solaire, I got invaded.  So I start maneuvering for a backstab and connect, then switch to pyro while he's on the ground and toast him a bit.  He gets up, I backstab him again and flame him again.  Then he seems to just kind of give up.  While he stands there I burn him to the ground.  What gives?  Did his mom call him for supper or something?  Weird.

Xtal, I accept your claim that after beating a boss you don't get invaded, but I think it may be finer grained than just "Defeat Undead Burg boss and you won't get invaded in Undead Burg".  Anyway, my above invasion experience seems to point to that.  I also have a suspicion that accepting the Way of White covenant makes one more susceptible to invasion.

Speaking of Xtal, we engaged in some jolly cooperation the other day.  He helped me with Capra Demon (yet another build).  Fun!

Edit: Oh, and speaking of NG+, I was doing some summon runs against Taurus Demon a while back and must have gotten summoned into someone's NG+ because TD netted me about 8000 souls, when he's usually good for 3000.

Nice job, Pokey. I was unable to best Priscilla on my own; I just couldn't get her invisibility to break.

A note about the Slumbering Dragoncrest Ring: it is like the Thief Ring, but I wouldn't say it's as universally helpful. What it does it mutes all sound coming from you, so walking, running, rolling, whatever, it's all silent. This makes approaches from behind enemies very fool-proof. However, approaching enemies for whom you are in plain sight will not really reduce their "aggro radius" so to speak. If they're slightly turned away it may take longer for them to notice you, but I've found that frontal assaults are pretty much the same with or without the ring.

Just keep that in mind.

Progress update: The Tomb of the Giants is pitch black. I farmed to level up four times to have my Intelligence hit 14 and be able to use the Oolacile sorcery Cast Light, which is invaluable in this place. I retrieved a Skull Lantern, but would rather use the attunement slot for a sorcery than give up my shield to hold a lantern. I was invaded by a member from my former covenant just after finding a bonfire. I actually welcomed this, because apparently Darkmoon Blade invasions knock off a number from your sin level - for some reason I had 1 that I just couldn't get rid of, but now it's gone.

This is a very dangerous area. There are some skeleton dog things that are relentless at eating away your stamina; they must be dispatched quickly and expertly. Luckily later on I was able to summon a phantom to help me with the end of the area, including an NPC phantom invasion from my old pal Leeroy. So sad. Well, anyway we went to take on Gravelord Nito and I think I hit him twice maybe... this person did all the work, because I was too busy fighting skeleton minions ... they were a nightmare for my attempts at targeting the boss.

But now I have a second major boss soul for the Lordvessel. Huzzah. Oh, and I met an old friend down in the Tomb. Still up to his old tricks, too, but he sells a few helpful items as a merchant, so letting him live is a good choice. Anyone who hasn't met this person will know who I speak of when you do!

I've worked my way through the castle, visiting the Blacksmith and opening the shortcut inside the castle and the small side gate outside. I still need to get the big front door open but have two giant knights in my way. I see the fog door that I suppose goes to the boss. Where would I look for a summon message? I am using the first bonfire right now. Would I find one there?

I enjoyed exploring the castle rather than some of the dark places we have been recently. There have been some tough spots to get by, though. I wonder if I may have missed any areas.

I got my halberd up to Lightning +4. I still need to upgrade my Fire Claymore.

Nice job, Botch. Even though your first instinct may be to leave Blighttown immediately, it's not a bad idea to find the hidden bonfire below the second bell and rest there; only because once you obtain the Lordvessel that will be one of the bonfires to which you can warp. I never rested there initially and learned this the hard way: the next time I wanted to revisit the area I had to trek through it instead of just warping to Quelaag's Domain.

Pokey, so you've visited the Giant Blacksmith no doubt if you received an upgrade to Lightning+4; if you can get past the black knight archer and the two giant knights (caution: they are stronger than the others in Anor Londo; according to the wiki they are known as Royal Knights. You can also farm them for titanite chunks) the lever to open the front doors is yours.

Two things: 1) I found the most summon signs to be back across the main bridge, right at the bottom of the staircase with the spiral platform (not the revolving middle piece of the bridge). You may also find a summon sign right in front of the fog gate, as I saw maybe one or two appear and fizzle out there. This spoiler is hidden particularly for Botch, who may not know this yet, but will soon:

2) This main room before the fog gate is where you can invade Lautrec's world and reclaim the fire keeper's soul which he stole. You should see a message appear that your Black Eye Orb is vibrating, or something like that. Unless of course you already killed Lautrec before he fled. In which case... bravo, you won't have a difficult fight with him in Anor Londo!

If I can give you any advice on the upcoming boss fight, I would say have patience, and don't be afraid to really back away and observe the patterns; this isn't one of the fights like Taurus Demon or Asylum Demon where your best bet is to strafe around the boss and stay in tight; unless you catch them looking in another direction (yes, there are two of them) I would advise you to keep your distance when possible. They hit hard. Good luck, and definitely don't hesitate to summon help for this one. "O&S" is a tough one; definitely a battle of endurance.

One more random tidbit: I upgraded my halberd to Lightning+5 by obtaining a titanite slab from the Stray Demon, so if you feel you're ready to head back to the Undead Asylum (if you haven't already) then defeating Stray will net you that slab.

xtal, some good advice. I'll look at help at the spiral staircase. Seems like a logical place. I defeated the archer knight but the two others weren't very cooperative and I resorted to poison arrows.Very easy. They didn't drop any titanite chunks. I will head over to the Stray Demon when I get back to Firelink.

Aaand I'm back. Hello! Sorry everyone!

Seems like all of you are some way ahead of me now so I've skimmed most of the posts on this page.

After leaving the Undead Asylum (and the guardian below the floor) I headed down into the Catacombs and wasn't having too much trouble until I encountered the pinwheel skeletons. They killed me once when I first came across them -- targetting is a big no-no against them until they stop eh? -- and the second time I managed to get to the Pinwheel boss. Seems that targetting it (them?) is a big no-no as well because, coupled with the incredible framerate drop, I couldn't tell what the hell was going on with the camera swinging around all over the place. I died after spending too long trying to hit the right instance of the boss and running out of Estus. On my way back to reclaim my bloodstain I died to the pinwheel skeletons again. What made me angry was the abysmal framerate though amidst all the Pinwheel illusions, it made it so difficult to judge anything.

Curiously, while I was down the Catacombs I saw a message pop up mentioning a Gravelord Servant. After a bit of research it seems that the level/area should have been more difficult with extra enemies, but I didn't really notice a difference unless perhaps the Gravelord Servant had left, I dunno, the message caught me off guard.
