I used firebombs and otherwise dodged those magic attacks. Got her on the third try. I didn't think to summon any NPCs (I always forget that). Anyway, I got the divine ember and bought the Artorias Crest and am headed back to the Depths. I'm fairly certain I haven't completely explored the Garden, but I don't see anything else (aside from the tomb).
Rule #2: Double-tap
The garden is HUGE, but it gets more and more dangerous the deeper you go. Now that you have the Artorias Crest, you have a nice shortcut to the rest of it.
Past the Artorias door are several NPC Forest Hunter phantoms that will attack on sight. They're very dangerous foes at your level, but you can farm a lot of souls from them. What you do is run down the steps and scamper around the forest a little to draw their attention. When they chase you back to the Artorias door, don't climb the stairs - instead, go to the small bluff/ledge just to the right of the steps and park yourself at the end of it. The phantoms will suicide off the cliff and earn you a good 3,000 souls apiece.
The foes you face past the Artorias door are not Darkwraiths. Those guys come later and are much worse; what you're fighting is Forest Hunter phantoms. Don't forget, if you're human in Darkroot, you can also be invaded by players who join the Forest Hunter Covenant. Unlike other invasions, there are no restrictions on level for Forest Hunter invasions, meaning you could find yourself facing a level 150 enemy.
You can join the Covenant yourself by talking to the cat lady in the tower, at the far end of the area with the NPC phantoms. I advise against it, though, since once you're a member you can't fight those phantoms without accumulating sin and making yourself a target for spirits of vengeance.
Darkwraiths come in PC and NPC flavors and work basically like Forest Hunters - there's a specific area in the game where PC members of the Dark Sun Covenant will automatically invade you if some other player has indicted you, or if you've accumulated enough sin. Again, you have to be in human form for the invasions to trigger.
The NPC Darkwraiths don't turn up until the very end of the game, by which time they're not much of a threat; however, they're a big part of the fiction.

Greg, I too fell victim to the trap in Undead Asylum. I didn't want to spoil the fun for anyone at the time.
I haven't given Stray Demon another try yet.
Steerpike, without giving it away, there's another way to get deeper into the Garden other than the tomb? It is easy to miss things down there.

I think so, but honestly I'm not sure what the path is. And I could be wrong about that - if I am, then the Crest of Artorias is necessary to reach everywhere you need to get in the Garden.
It's so easy to get turned around in that place, I never really got my bearings. Even running around to attract the Forest Hunters can be risky. More than once I couldn't find my way back to the stairs!
Two bosses remain in Darkroot after the Moonlight Butterfly; one's optional and one's not.
There is an illusory wall in Darkroot Basin, too, that provides another bonfire and a shortcut to the Valley of the Drakes. It's interesting to see how the whole world fits together.
Life is the misery we endure between disappointments.
I got the Moonlight Butterfly on my next try with the help of Witch Beatrice. With the Divine Ember I can make my mace divine but I need a green shard, I guess. Got the Enchanted Ember and also went into the furthest area of Darkroot Garden and got the Hornet Ring. I'm leaving the wolves for later. Maybe time to go back to the depths.
Pokey, if you need to farm some green titanite shards try the slime creatures in the Depths; they have a fair drop rate for those and large regular shards. Particularly the hallway outside of the Depths bonfire, it's the perfect farming spot. I did it myself to create my Fire Bastard Sword.
If being wrong's a crime I'm serving forever
Nice going, Botch.
Pokey, I apologize, Gregg is right; humanity affects your drop rate and I failed to mention that when I farmed them I had something like 25 humanity, so my drop rate was maxed (I think it tops off around 210). I was getting a green or large shard about every other run down the hallway.
I believe if your humanity is at 10 you'll be at the best drop rate you can hit.
As for me... I've just defeated the Iron Golem after a fun trip around Sen's Fortress. I'm off to Anor Londo right after I submit this post.
If being wrong's a crime I'm serving forever
It's funny Botch, I'm in NG+ right now and Capra Demon is absolutely destroying me. I can't get past him, there's just no room to maneuver! It's driving me crazy since comparatively speaking, Capra Demon's not really a very imposing boss, especially compared with some of the things you're about to face.
You guys must be really good at this game, because I never had anything near 25 loose humanity. 2, 3, maybe 4; that was about it. In fact I only ever cracked the stuff in the clay vessels if I was planning to summon help. If you spend enough time roaming the Depths, you can collect a pretty good amount of the storable kind from the rats.
Pokey: nicely done on Gaping Dragon. Defeating that thing was a kind of turning point for me, a point where I sort of stopped believing I had no chance of finishing and started believing that it could be done. Blighttown is... horrid, awful, the worst; but it too is a turning point of sorts.
xtal, you're flyin'. Enjoy Anor Londo - it's kind of a treat from the developers after all the horrors of the Depths and Blighttown and Sen's Fortress. It marks the halfway point in your journey, too.
There is a lot of hidden stuff in Anor Londo - an entire hidden world, plus a very significant amount of plot material that may or may not be exposed depending on how you behave and what you find while you're there. It's during your time in Anor Londo that you realize Dark Souls actually has an immense and comprehensive backstory and supporting fiction, but From doesn't tell you what much of it is. Not because it doesn't exist, but because Dark Souls doesn't make anything easy. Your imagination, and your own conclusions, are necessary to find your own story in the game.

Well, I've never had much loose humanity, maybe 3 at the most. Usually it is 1 or 0. I hate to crack open vessels to have a better chance at a drop. I'll farm rats for a while and maybe my luck will change. Upgrade stones seem harder to come by in this game and the magic seems weaker. I checked out Blighttown and it looked pretty scary. I may try a different route going in.
Defeating the Gaping Dragon that easily did give my spirits a lift and I'm ready to charge ahead.
I don't usually have much loose humanity either, although right now I'm carrying about the most I ever have - around 8.
Nice going Pokey and Xtal on bosses I'm probably days away from seeing! 🙂
After I killed Capra Demon (you're right Steerpike, he's not as hard as he seemed at first, but of course NG+ is a different beast) I helped around 6 or 7 people defeat him. I really enjoy that, and the souls and humanity aren't bad either.
Then it was off to the depths which seemed like a leisurely stroll compared to the Garden. Even those butchers weren't too terrible, although I got invaded once and lost before a summon could help. This whole invading thing is annoying, but I'm starting to see it as just another hazard that the game throws at you. I'm standing at the fog door to what I surmise is the lair of that giant rat.
Oh, those blob things down here are nasty. One of them ambushed me from above but I got away before it did me in. Firebombs work nicely.
Speaking of dragons, I haven't even attempted to defeat the drake in the Parish. Has anyone taken that thing out yet?
Rule #2: Double-tap
The Hellkite Dragon! I can't imagine facing it head on, though I did bring it down LATE in my game with arrows. The doorway it's perched over leads to a room with a bonfire and acts as a convenient rat-bypassing shortcut to the Parish proper (though rats are probably not an issue for you guys any more). That room also provides access to the Sunlight Altar, where you can join the Warrior of Sunlight Covenant (useful for co-op play). The Knight Solaire goes there after he visits one other place, so to follow his questline you will want to visit.
xtal, how do you get all the humanity? Tell us! Are you doing a lot of co-op? Beating a boss when summoned gets you a point. Another way to amass it loose is to stay in one area and defeat many monsters there. It doesn't matter if you camp at a bonfire, but don't leave the one area until you've earned as much as you want. You can also earn quite a bit of humanity if you break a Fire Keeper's Soul, though it seems crazy to treat one that way.
Life is the misery we endure between disappointments.
I tried getting summoned to help with Gaping Dragon but no one showed up. Farmed rats for a while with no result, but when I tried the slimes again, I got some drops. In three of the runs, I got 2 shards each. So far I got 5 large titanite and 3 greens. That should nearly get my halberd to +10 and my morning star to Divine +2. My humanity is 1.
