Pokey, I found a good way to make my deaths by the Stray Demon less annoying: each time you die go drop an item for the Crow; try  again, die again, and run back to the nest to receive your gift, drop another item, rinse and repeat. It's a fun little mini game I like to call "How many times can the Stray Demon kill me?"

lol

There are some great trades with the crow. Each moss type nets you twinkling titanite; prism stones, dung pies and I think a sunlight medal get you demon titanite, and a surefire way to get a red titanite slab is to trade an ascended (just once) pyromancy flame. I did that and made myself a Chaos Longbow +5, very good bow! Also, if you still have that piece of Rubbish on you from the Undead Burg, it gets you a titanite chunk.

I just picked up a skeleton lantern in the Catacombs. I should probably trade that for a fog ring. I have the cast light spell so I don't think I will need the lantern. I've traded some of the other items.

I have a Fire Longbow but I read somewhere that it is bugged and you get  no fire damage, just physical damage. If this is true, I should change it back and go another way. I found that I need the Large Flame Ember to upgrade my Claymore, so that trip was wasted except for the skeleton lantern.

Man, I've been out of the loop for a while!

From Software is a fairly large company. It's been in business since 1986 and making games since around 1993, I think. In the West the company's best known for King's Field and Armored Core alongside the Souls games; it also publishes. Numbers conflict for Souls games sales but the grand total for both is north of 2.2 million units - very good numbers for a game like this.

They're going to take a PR hit with the Prepare to Die edition. The PC version will probably receive poor reviews due to the porting issues and GFWL, but with Steam sales it could move over a million units. Still, I imagine we will see more development along these lines, either a new Souls game or something very much like it. It just makes economic sense.

Sadly, not everything From makes is guaranteed. Armored Core V got mediocre reviews and moved 410K units; I expect Steel Battalion: Heavy Armor will probably do worse than that. Nonetheless, as far as I know the company's on stable financial ground and the team responsible for the Souls games is surely focusing on their next victory.

Xtal:

EpicNameBro's videos are fantastic! I've been relying on them heavily for much of the Dark Souls lore and I'll be using them more when I get to the Snooty Games Are Literature piece I'm planning for the series.

You and I are in the same time zone... maybe we should figure out some way to do a podcast discussion or something. Bring a few others in. Virtual chat about Dark Souls. You're right, like you I just want to talk and talk about this game!

So... did you link the flame?

Yes, podcast it up! That would be swell.

I did link the flame. When I saw my character ignite I was in disbelief for about a second, then things started to click. Snake dog guy just wanted me to take Gwyn's place to keep the precious Age of Fire intact. He must have forgot to tell me the part where I have to burn to a crisp to do it.

Let there be no guilt or vacillation, indeed, Sir Snake Dog Thing.

I'm currently watching a speed run on YouTube, I'm on part 2 of 3. The person supposedly beats the game in 35 minutes. I doubted it... but that was before he killed Taurus, the Bell Gargoyles, and Quelaag, ringing both Bells of Awakening in under 14 minutes from exiting the character creation screen.

EDIT: Never mind. He used some weird glitch to skip the entire second half of the game. No more broken than a Morrowind speed run I guess, but disappointing, since the guy has hilarious skill ... starts the game and has the Lordvessel in under half an hour ... he probably only needed another hour. Oh well. There will always be the Jurassic Park speed run.

"Let there be no guilt, let there be no vacillation."

I heard a pep talk.

But that wasn't what he was saying, was it?

"Do as I tell you, human. Don't ask questions."

I admit, until I started doing research I didn't know how thoroughly I'd been fooled. Even the immolation didn't quite click - until I got to realizing what it is those bonfires burn. They ain't logs.

As my buddy McShane said to me, when I described the final moments: "You were so desperate for a friend in Lordran."

Frampt's final words - "I admit, I am fond of you humans."

But they still have to burn if the Age of Fire is to perpetuate.

The final Diary is up. My original draft ran another thousand words and held more spoilers than what I finally published. I'll save the rest for something else.

So yes, tell me about your build, I’m curious what rings you use now, and such.

Yes, it's the thief that I used on our co-op run.  I'm lvl 61 or so.  I use the Shadow armor, although I'm working on leveling up some other, heavier, pieces to use as my endurance increases.  I'm kind of regretting upgrading that set as much as I did since twinkling titanite isn't easy to come by - at least I haven't found anything that drops it other than crystal lizards.  I'm focused on Dex (I'm at 41 and any more points seem wasted), and now Vit and End, and will probably start putting points into Int later on to make use of Int-scaling weapons and also since high Dex increases your casting speed.

I have a Iaito at +10, a bandit knife at +10, an Uchigatana at +10 (very similar to Iaito but I wanted to compare) and another Uchigatana at +5 magic for now (I bought two from Shiva).  I also obtained the Pharis bow from one of the forest hunter NPCs.  I alternately wear Havel's ring, Fog ring, Hornet ring, and whatever else is appropriate to the situation (e.g. rusty ring while farming in Blighttown).  I have a Heater shield at +10 or so.  Lightweight and reasonably stable and not bad at parrying.  I dislike the parrying-specific shields since their damage reduction is so bad and I'm not very good at parrying.

I also have a pyromancy, uh, thingy at +4 or so.  I'm hesitant to put too much more into it at the moment.  Pyromancy is odd.  I haven't yet figured out if I think it's even a viable path on its own.  The spells are powerful, but slow.  At least the lower level ones are.  I got Chaos fireball or whatever from that spider lady thing.  Plus the fact that no specific attribute directly helps with pyromancy makes me see it as a secondary path alongside some other attribute-based focus.  It seems logical to at least have some pyro, since the only cost is souls, which you can farm anywhere.

Oh, mentioning Havel's ring made me remember something cool.  I was doing Taurus Demon runs a while back and a guy who was obviously a veteran, gave me Havel's ring, a crystal sword and a crystal shield.  And hardly even waited for thanks (a bow from me).  I only wish I had remembered his ID so I could thank him properly.  The etiquette among co-op players always makes me smile.  The huge majority of players bow or otherwise acknowledge you after a successful boss run.  Very cool.

I'm giving up on Stray Demon for now. After more than an hour, I only reduced his health less than 1/4. I see videos where the player is able to stay behind him most of the time and keep attacking, but I get one hit and he spins. He is very fast with that heavy weapon. The titanite slab wouldn't improve my halberd a lot and maybe I can find one elsewhere.

Botch, did you check the "players you have met" list? You might recognize the name. I've had one really nice message and one from a jerk. Players seem to always bow and sometimes recognize a great move with a salute.

Botch, as you suspect I don't believe pyromancy should be pursued as a reliable path of primary offense. However, I think the appeal of pyromancy is exactly the fact that it doesn't rely upon any stats. I don't think the casting speed is affected by dexterity like spells are unfortunately, that would be a huge boon. On the bright side, you can max out pyromancy pretty much after you've defeated Quelaag in Blighttown and Quelana appears (only she can ascend the flame beyond +15 I believe). It costs a boat load of souls (probably around 250,000 - 300,000 when all is said and done, but at the cost of souls and nothing more it's entirely worth it.

My Knight's main focus has been miracles, but since the ones I primarily used in NG are a bit weaker now in NG+ (Great Lightning Spear, Gravelord Greatsword Dance, Wrath of the Gods) I've switched 3 of my 4 attunement slots to pyromancy basically for support. A tip: there are a few items which will increase the lethality of pyromancy. First, the Bellowing Dragoncrest Ring which is used to enhance spell damage also works on pyromancy. Second, the Lingering Dragoncrest Ring will enhance the length of the Carmina pyromancies (Iron Flesh, Flash Sweat, Power Within). Third, the Crown of Dusk (Dusk of Oolacile's helm) and Crown of the Dark Sun (Gwyndolin's helm) will enhance the damage as well.

I like to go to the Sunlight Alter bonfire to test out different combinations. Since there are convenient enemies located right outside the bonfire room this is made quite simple. Basically, wearing the Crown of Dusk, Bellowing Dragoncrest Ring and using my maxed out flame (Ascended +5) I can do roughly 850 damage to random undead (the ones found commonly throughout the Parish) with a blast from Great Fireball. If I were to use Power Within the damage of Great Fireball typically exceeds 1200. Since the amount of uses for most pyromancies is low, it is indeed not to be relied upon, but it can be invaluable for support, or just to save throughout certain levels until the boss.

I've no doubt made a few mistakes in leveling up my character (with Blighttown in the rearview I regret putting as many points into Resistance as I did, even if it makes NG+ less painful, it will probably be an insubstantial amount) but I think I've done fairly well. I'll share with you the stats of my Knight to give you an idea of what I've tried to go for.

LH: Silver Knight Shield+5 OR Grass Crest Shield+5, Canvas Talisman

Full Giant Armor Set+5, situationally switching head for Crown of Dusk or Symbol of Avarice.

Havel's Ring (this is on 95% of the time), Cloranthy Ring situationally switched for Ring of Fog, Red Tearstone, Slumbering Dragoncrest, the Covetous Serpent rings, or Ring of the Sun's Firstborn.

I have ventured into Sen's and have already died a few times.  I keep getting knocked off by those pendulums. The most recent one left me in a pit with titanite demons.  The floor is like tar or something.  I was able to kill one.  Luckily the snake men aren't a challenge.
Before falling I came across a place where a huge ball rolls by every few seconds.  I couldn't explore it more because I got invaded.  Tried to push him off the walkway but got pushed off myself.

Botch, the Rusted Iron Ring will eliminate the tar-floor slowdown effect. This is very helpful both here and in the Blighttown Swamp.

Sen's is not a very large structure. It seems large, but it's not. After a few runs you'll have the lay of the place and understand how to manage it. Those rolling balls can be redirected (you'll see how when you get there), and occasionally crash through walls to reveal important hidden sections.

One piece of advice: when you reach the roof, bring along some poison arrows, or even poison throwing knives in a pinch. One of the two Very Large Foes up there doesn't respawn when you kill him, and poison makes that pretty easy. Plus, taking him down makes the boss fight quite a bit easier.

Thanks for the advice Steerpike.  Fortunately I thought to put on the Rusted Iron Ring before I got pummeled.  I killed all the Titanite Demons and found the ladder up, but some guy is standing on it!  Anyway, I stopped there for now.

Botch, did you check the “players you have met” list? You might recognize the name. I’ve had one really nice message and one from a jerk. Players seem to always bow and sometimes recognize a great move with a salute.

Pokey, I have no knowledge of this!  How do you access it?  I'm pretty ignorant about PSN features.  *Edit*: found it.  No nasty msgs. 🙂

My stats at soul level 68

Vit 32  Att 16  End 29  Str 18  Dex 15  Res 12  Int 16  Fth 12

Favorite weapons: Fire Claymore +5 and Lightning Halberd +4

I am using Pyromancy Flame 15 with Fire Orb and Great Combustion. Also Great Soul Arrow and Heal.

I mix and match armor depending on whether I need agility or poise. I just snatched the Gold Hemmed Black set, which is very light, from the Demon's Ruins.

I am in New Londo ruins. Just got swarmed with ghosts and killed. I need to pull them out. I tried Stay Demon again and did a bit better but he continually spins so I am running to get behind him all the time and get few hits in.

I found that I need a key to advance in New Londo ruins, so I am battling Sif now and not doing so great.

Sen's is pretty brutal, but I'm making progress.  I freed Logan and killed that giant on the roof.  Haven't found a bonfire yet.

Pokey, you probably already know this, but Sif is easier if you stay close.  Close as in underneath.  What was your starting character class?

SB, the bonfire in Sen's is tricky to find. Once you're up on the... the parapet, I guess you'd call it... inch forward and peer off the edge of the main wall. You'll see a small balcony within dropping distance. There should be some "Bonfire Ahead" messages to the effect, but I ignored them at first since I was hesitant to go so close to the edge.

Pokey, if Sif gives you a lot of trouble, leave her be for now and run other errands. She gets pretty easy near the end, and New Londo needn't be an early stop in your quest for Lord's Souls.

SB, my starting character was a Warrior.

Steerpike, I may do that. I need to practice a bit more on the fight strategy. I tried summoning help but that is very difficult with all the invaders. They can see you from a mile away even when you are wearing the fog ring.

I am getting an error message this morning and can't sign on to PSN. Anyone else having problems or know how to solve this?frown

I played offline for a while and killed Ceaseless Discharge and got the Chaos Ember. Heading toward the Large Flame Ember. I want that to upgrade my Fire Claymore.

I did get the Large Flame Ember and then was able to get online and get a helper to defeat Firesage Demon. When I found the shortcut elevator, I headed back to Firelink for the night. The Demon Ruins is not bad if you take your time and engage one enemy at a time.

Pokey, I think you should be able to obtain the Large Flame Ember just before entering Lost Izalith, so it should be available even if the Lordvessel has yet to be obtained. You haven't gone to Anor Londo yet, have you? Or at least cleared it? You're going to run into almost purely physical damage there, so try to prepare your outfit for that. There's a bit of lightning damage here and there, but mostly I found Anor Londo to be a trial of patience: long physical battles ensue, so high endurance is a boon.

As I experiment with a few new characters I'm finding more and more that your gear outweighs your stats so very much. I've made a sorcerer-type character who, at level 14, has cleared Taurus, Capra, Belfry Gargoyles, Gaping Dragon, Quelaag, Moonlight Butterfly and the Darkroot Basin Hydra. This took a lot of work, but I went in with the goal of spending my souls on upgrades, gear, and spells rather than levels, save for some essential stat raises. I'm trying this for a few reasons. The first, is that I just want to see how far I can get into the game at such a low soul level (I have the minimum Vitality of 8, which gives me something like 530 HP). The second is that I like playing in human form and being able to summon help, which is surprisingly available at low levels almost everywhere I've been so far; I've also found that playing into later areas as such a low level reduces the chance of being invaded.

It's also a plus to lend your help sometimes and surprise (or "troll," as you might lovingly say) an incoming griefer who expected easy prey at level 10. Even if I fail half of the time, there's just something about defeating a griefer that is satisfying. Maybe it's a thankful host you defended, or perhaps just imagining the sour face of some jerk as they watch a loading screen send them back to their world. Or maybe they're all from Japan and are trying to do some serious role-playing, and it's actually me who is the jerk?

Xtal you make some good points. I've always striven to level up as quickly as possible, but I can definitely see how spending souls on upgrades can be more effective.  Great, now I'm tempted to experiment even more than usual!  🙂

I finally found Sen's bonfire after several deaths. I forgot Steerpike's advice about the poison, but I was able to kill that bomb-throwing giant with arrows. I usually carry several hundred but it really didn't take that many. Avoiding the fire seemed way too tough.

Spending souls on gear upgrades rather than soul levels holds true most especially for Pyromancy: as long as you're willing to farm the souls (and it's a lot of souls) you can have a fully upgraded Flame, which does ridiculous damage, very early in the game. All you need is access to Blighttown.

Also, when you know the layout of the entire world due to having finished the game previously, this brings quite an advantage. One of the first things I did with my sorcerer was access the Valley of Drakes from Darkroot Basin, battle two drakes (with a level 8 character this was hard as hell), dispatch the large undead dragon, and proceed into Blighttown to A) get the New Londo key (I selected Pendant as a gift - no Master Key) to unlock that shortcut, and B) head into the Great Hollow and pick up the immensely useful Cloranthy Ring.

One disadvantage I put myself at: I grabbed the Fire Keeper soul from Blighttown, not knowing that this would trigger Lautrec's ... event. So now at level 14 Firelink Shrine is useless to me. Until I can complete Anor Londo, of course. So a warning: do not do this if you like Firelink Shrine as a hub!

I've tried to upgrade my gear rather than leveling my character except to meet requirements. I don't want my character to get so high that it is hard to summon someone to help or get someone to accept your summons. Sometimes I level just to use my souls in case I lose them.

I joined the covenant of the Warriors of the Sun. It's nice being a golden warrior. I also wanted to check up on Solaire and make sure he will be there to be summoned in Demon's Ruins. I had to kill Siegmeyer when he attacked me. I guess I nicked him when fighting the silver knights. Big Hat Logan has gone missing too but may be in the Duke's Archives.

I completed Anor Londo a while ago and have been placing my summon sign there today. I got a couple summons but both were interrupted by invaders. There are a lot around there. I left Demon's Ruins after Firesage and think maybe I should try somewhere else that might be easier.
