The Depths cannot possibly prepare you for the hell that is Blighttown. I was invaded twice tonight, by the same person. I outlasted him or her in a couple games of cat and mouse that, combined, lasted well over 40 minutes.

Too exhausted and ready for sleep to write about my adventures down there but ... wow. I was nearly in tears. Fifty thousand souls, 15 humanity, gone, all because of a stupid fall off a wonky piece of terrain. Le sigh! And I hadn't lit a new bonfire down there because I didn't want to respawn the hellish enemies. Heck, I was practically home free, there was no point. But I'm probably going to have to go back to Quelaag's Domain at some point for the fire keeper there.

I've now met Frampt. His stomach can't be feeling good after what I just fed him.

Firelink...

has gone out. frown

Blighttown was horrible. So horrible. Oh god, so horrible. I thought nothing could be worse than the Depths. How wrong I was.

xtal, you have proven my concept of going to the Catacombs early to defeat the Pinwheel. Having the Rite of Kindling at this point in the game (especially given that you seem to be a Humanity sponge) should change things up dramatically. I had no divine weapon. I wish I had. There were like a million skeletons chasing me.

The giant blacksmith is the next blacksmith you'll meet. He's large, hence his name.

Enjoy Sen's Fortress. ; )

I'm wondering if there is a shortcut ahead that will let me leave the depths and go up above and get some supplies. Maybe I should just head back the way I came. I am at the first bonfire in the depths. The two butchers are dead, so no strong enemies in the path back. Is there anyway out before completing Blighttown?

Later...I decided to go back and get supplies and I also killed Lautrec.

Pokey, the quickest way back to Firelink from the Depths is pretty much the long way you came: back to the lower Burg, then the shortcut through the aqua duct with the undead merchant.

You can only proceed to Blighttown from the Depths once you've defeated the area boss of the Depths, unless you have a master key. If you took it as your starting gift you could go to Blighttown immediately; if not, you can still take an alternate route which is granted by the master key. After you beat the boss of the Depths that merchant who was down there, I think Domnhall of Zena was his name, he relocates, for some insane reason, to the part of the bridge near Firelink that you have to jump to.

Anyway, if you have the master key you can go down to the New Londo Ruins, take an immediate right into another cylindrical construct, similar from the one which you just emerged, and the master key opens a gate to the Valley of Drakes. You cross a rickety little wooden bridge and then proceed into the large tunnel for the shortcut to Blighttown. Whether you want to use this shortcut depends on how you're playing the game. If you're trying to collect as many items as possible and light all bonfires, etc. then you'd probably rather go the normal way in, via the Depths. If, however, you'd like to avoid as much of Blighttown as possible use this shortcut. You'll fight 3 very large enemies off the bat, who may take a few attempts to master, but after them there will be a few poisonous mosquitoes and the rest you can avoid if you're careful. Hint: The boss' lair is located in a tunnel on the part of the area that looks like a beehive with something like round black spikes coming out of it (maybe they have a proper name?)

xtal, I figured that was going to be the answer. It is a long slog. I'm thinking going through the Valley of the Drakes might be shorter and easier if I can get by a few tough enemies. Your advice will be a great help. I got rid of that electric bolt creature by Andre using a bunch of arrows and will try to defeat the boss in the Darkroot Garden. Then maybe see if I can defeat Havel. I also want to go back to the Undead Asylum and visit Snuggly.

I didn't realize the Master Key was necessary to take the shortcut to Blighttown, but then it was my starting gift so I never took note of when I used it. In either case I do recommend the long way for all the souls and treasure you're likely to find.

There is a sort of shortcut once you light the Depths bonfire, one that trims down the amount of time to get in and out by making a certain ladder accessible, but I'll have to practice it a bit before I give any advice on where it is or how to use it. It does make life a little easier.

Blighttown also affords access to two large areas that are completely optional - the Great Hollow and Ash Lake. Some players like to visit early, since the souls and loot you can get is substantial; both are pretty dangerous spots, though. Once the second bell is run and a few other odds and ends accomplished, traveling back to Blighttown is a simple matter and you can bypass the Depths (and Blighttown village) entirely.

Had a bit of a shitty cold weekend, the boiler conked out and it looks like we're going to have to get a new one. Sob. Bye bye this months and last months wages...

Managed to get a bit of cold Dark Souls in last night though. Ventured into the Depths again and accidentally walked through a boss fog gate (Gaping Dragon) and was promptly stomped. I decided to summon somebody to help but en route we were invaded and the black phantom appeared right behind me almost instantly so we didn't stand a chance. I think I lost about 5 humanity and 6000 souls. With nothing to lose I thought it would be worth having another crack at the boss (on my own this time) and with a bit of patience and observation (and evasion) I managed to work out its pattern and defeated it. The key to Blighttown, YAY!! ...nope. Not going there, not yet.

I'd not handed over any of my embers yet so I paid a visit to Andre and got my mace +5 upgraded to a Divine Mace Of Undead Smiting, otherwise known as the 'Put Down and Keep Down' (PDKD) weapon for when I head into the Catacombs. While I was there I wandered into the basement to take out the mono-limbed demon as well and after a tough fight he was finished.

When I went back to Firelink to check on that weasel and the clerics (who have now gone) I looked up at the crow and the nest and decided it was time to find out how to get back to the Asylum and pay Snuggly a visit. Eventually I found the way up and managed to get back. Things seem pretty nasty back there now, it almost feels like going back to the mansion in Resident Evil after spending a few hours in the garden house.

I fell victim to the crumbling floor and the Asylum Demon and after a homeward bone run to pick up my souls and humanity I managed to defeat a few black knights and that guy who saved me at the beginning of the game. I now have a doll. Curious.

I tried-- rather sheepishly-- my hand at the Asylum demon half a dozen times. Every time he crushed or beat me to smithereens. I decided to avoid him and just revisit the rest of the asylum. The Rusted Iron Ring would be an invaluable item to have in Blighttown.

I headed down to Darkroot Basin again and this time I got the Black Knight. When I ran past him and into the bonfire cave, he wouldn't enter, so I just poked him with my +7 halberd  until he died.  Picked up a nice shield and took the elevator down to Valley of the Drakes and ran into some blue dragons. I think I'll need some special arrows.

I did farm the Darkroot Garden for a while and leveled up and got another attunement slot and the heal spell. I also killed all the stone knights. I still need to go see Snuggly.

Later, I went back to the Undead Asylum, killed Oscar and got the Rusted Iron Ring. Tomorrow I'll try the Black Knights and maybe the Boss. I got a lot of good stuff trading with Snuggly.

Guys I have seriously hit a wall.  I have not been able to make any meaningful progress for quite some time now.  Darkroot Garden continues to annihilate me.  I most recently lost about 6 humanity and around 5000 souls down there.  Another time I got killed in two hits by an invader.  I guess it was one of those forest covenant guys - a dark spirit or some such.  I think there's some lag exploit that allows you to backstab people because it seems to happen to me frequently.

I don't know of anywhere else to go besides the basement boss but I'm fairly certain how that will turn out.  The Asylum is loaded with tough enemies too, although I did manage to kill a difficult knight near the first bonfire.  I haven't been reading everyone's updates for fear of too many spoilers so I assume everyone is rather far along.

Pretty much all I've done lately is help a few people with Taurus Demon and fiddled around with some other builds.  Dark times!

I'm about in the same spot. I can't handle the Black Knights at the Asylum yet, so I went after Havel and got his ring by going through the Darkroot Basin. I had to sneak by the Crystal Golems. I go offline in Darkroot Garden to avoid being invaded. Have you tried getting help with the bosses? I died against the boss in Darkroot Garden and haven't been back yet.

I have my Longbow upgraded to +4. The magic spells seem to be less effective than they were in Demon's Souls.

Sounds like you're in the same spot I was the other week before I joined arms with xtal, though admittedly in that post I only seemed to articulate my situation with the sentence "I’m struggling on where to go next because it seems that everywhere is hurting me badly at the moment." Oh! Just found it:

...from a quest/story/progress perspective, your next stop should be the Depths.

I recommend this as well, especially now you've defeated the Capra Demon. I was pretty much in the same position as Steerpike towards the end of the weekend: everywhere was kicking my arse and I didn't know where to start chipping away at next. After me and xtal took the Capra Demon down I was pleased to see that the Depths felt do-able so my next port of call is there. It's tough behind the Artorias door (but close to a bonfire) and scary down in Darkroot Basin.

Incidentally, I too lost a lot of souls and humanity in the Darkroot forest area, presumably you mean behind the Artorias door? Those ghostly Darkwraiths are tough (if you don't glitch kill them!). Botch, there's also a bonfire directly to the left of the Artorias door behind a secret wall.

I have been at that wall, guys. The next move is the Depths, followed by Blighttown. Both are miserable experiences, but you'll cross a psychological threshold by completing them.

There is no shame in glitch killing the Forest Hunter NPCs through Artorias's door in Darkroot. I did it for an hour, and the resulting levels made the Depths a lot easier to handle. Good luck! I know you guys can do it!

I've been mauled by surprise a few times now in Sen's Fortress. First by misjudging a swinging blade, next by a mimic, then when I finally emerged onto the rooftops I was met with a giant firebomb exploding in my face.

That place is damn tricky.

I don't even know where the Depths are.  Is it entered via Capra Demon's room?  And I haven't mustered the souls required to open that tomb door in the Garden, so I'm talking about just the Garden here.  Stupid trees and stone golems all have my number to varying degrees.

Glitch kill?

The Depths can be reached by going down the stairs just outside Capra Demon's lair. It twists around and there's this very unassuming wooden door that opens with the key. You can also reach it by cutting through the aqueduct if you've opened the gate about halfway down, but I think you have to go the long way first.

Botch, saving up to 20,000 souls for the Crest of Artorias is a nuisance, but you'll make it back quickly by taking advantage of a trick that sends the (otherwise incredibly tough) Forest Hunter phantoms over a cliff. At about 3,000 souls apiece, with a bonfire inches away, it's a good place to farm souls if you don't mind capitalizing on a glitch in the game.

xtal, you might want to invest in some poisoned arrows. It makes one non-respawning foe on the roof of Sen's Fortress a lot easier.

The stone golems can be taken out fairly easily with a mace. I have a Morningstar +5 and it only takes a few swings. I use my Halberd on the trees.

Well I found the hidden bonfire in the Garden.  I thought it was on the other side of the tomb door.  I saw a message about an illusory wall and discovered it.  After that I seemed to do better.  Must be the positive vibes from this thread.  🙂

I decided to stay here and explore a little before trying the Depths (I totally missed the door I guess).  I've figured out how to effectively fight the golems and I found a hidden area behind a destructible tree that I had never noticed before - again thanks to someone's message.  I got the Wolf Ring and I also grabbed the Elite Knight armor, although it's too heavy.

Now I'm up against the Moonlight Butterfly or whatever she's called.  The Crest Shield that I got from a knight in the Asylum helps a lot, with 80% dmg reduction, but I have no good way of doing damage myself.  Arrows are largely ineffective.  I tried to get up close but couldn't seem to hit her.  Two deaths so far.

As a Cleric I couldn't fire shit at the Moonlight Butterfly so I clung on to the hope that From Software hadn't created a boss which could only be defeated using projectiles; thankfully that hope was worth clinging on to because if you wait long enough the butterfly will perch on those glittering plants adorning the edges of the walkway giving you a few moments to get stuck in with your melee weapon of choice. Dodging the butterfly's attacks is quite tricky but keep holding your shield up, keep moving, and throw yourself out of the way just before the homing attacks (which hit the hardest) are about to hit you.

Botch, try restoring your humanity and look for a certain summon sign under the stairs leading to the Moonlight Butterfly. It may be very helpful.
