This could be a maddening boss, xtal, and it took me a while to kill. My recommendation - once you'd destroyed the left and right sections of the tree at the edges of the cavern, they don't respawn. Then, for the Suicide Leap straight into the Bed of Chaos itself, the trick is to zig just a little to the left right before you jump. A straight on leap will send you into the abyss every time. However, once you're on that lower root, it's a straight run and one hit will kill the beast. Good luck!

Yep, first attempt today did it. It's just frustrating when you're pretty sure you know what you have to do, but utterly fail at executing. My recommendation to everyone else: don't bring any souls or humanity into the Bed of Chaos fight (boss of Lost Izalith). Spend the souls, kindle the second Izalith bonfire, use what you can because you're going to die a few times, or at the very least once, during this one. If you don't ... bravo.

I guess there's nothing left for me to do now but take the last lord soul to the Firelink altar. Although first I'm exploring the optional hollow tree area below Blighttown and ascending all the weapons I can. It's all coming to an end though, I can tell. Siegmeyer's daughter claims she's found her father and has left Firelink Shrine again. Solaire was sitting in the Demon Ruins, depressed that whatever he came to do has been for naught, but he seems to have wandered off as well. Most anyone else I knew hollowed and died; the sorcerer Griggs is still around, but he doesn't say much. Petrus has nothing at all to add, being pretty much silent since his return from the Catacombs; speaking to Rhea I learned that he abandoned her party down there, which is not at all surprising. I'd off him to see what happens, but I'd rather not accumulate any more sin.

Other than them it's just Frampt's snoring.

Yes, you're nearly finished, my friend!

My second to last Diary, which is actually the end, is almost done. It's been quite a journey.

Yes it has... yes it has.

Patiently awaiting your last diaries. If you told me two months ago I'd be finishing Dark Souls by about the time you were done publishing those diaries... well I'd have laughed at the thought.

Being summoned in Anor Londo hasn't worked out so well lately. Three out of the last four tries, we have been invaded. The last time, we had killed the knights and were at the fog door to the boss when the host took off chasing the invader. They turned the tower several times and ran down the spiral stairs. I got tired of it and just watched as did the other summoned one. The host finally died and then he messaged me and called me an idiot. Am I supposed to support him in every crazy escapade he gets himself into?

I hesitate to summon help for my attempt with all the invaders that are showing up.

I'm down in Blight Town, only just entered it though and lit the first bonfire. I've explored the catacombs as much as I can for the time being, the Titanite Demon and the Tomb of Giants being the areas I'll have to revisit later. The skull lantern is very useful and very cool. I've been wanting to help somebody with the Bell Gargoyles but I never get summoned. In fact, apart from joining xtal, I don't think I've ever been summoned by somebody else. Boohoo. I want souls and humanity and the warm glow of goodwill damn it!

Gregg, the Way of White and the Warriors of Sunlight Covenants both confer some advantages to co-op play, making summon signs more common and such. I know very little about the underlying technology of the multiplayer, so it's possible that your connection is interfering (you've mentioned your connection's kinda slow, maybe it auto-culls certain signs based on latency? Dunno). I wish you the best. I didn't do too much co-op until Anor Londo, but after that it became an essential part of the game for me.

There are four regions you shouldn't be able to penetrate too deeply until later in the game, so don't worry about them: the Duke's Archive, the Tomb of the Giants, Lost Izalith and the Abyss will all be mostly closed to you until you complete a certain objective. Meantime, you're in the right place, even though the "right place" is the worst place in the universe. Try not to get anything on your shoes while you're in Blighttown, and for the love of Christ, don't drink the water.

Gregg, I am in the Way of the White covenant and am getting quite a few summons. What is your level? Is it right for the area? I am at level 60 for Anor Londo. I have a lot of souls but hesitate to level up more and put myself out of the usual range for the area. I am in California and find that the late afternoon or around 9 PM are good times to get summoned. Have you tried Capra Demon or the Gaping Dragon? I hear those are pretty active.

Ornstein and Smough are dead and I didn't get invaded. I had a couple of good helpers. I have a ton of souls to spend now and warped back to Flrelink with my Lordvessel. I love that.

Should I try the Duke's Archives next or maybe someplace else? Is the Princess' Guard preferable in any way to Way of the White?

I can't find Big Hat Logan at Firelink. Griggs says he is right there, but I don't see him.

I put my summon down at Gaping Dragon and got summoned at level 60 fairly quickly. Also got a bunch of humanity from the rats while I was there. I really need a titanite chunk to upgrade my Lightning Halberd.

As far as I know I've been in the Way of the White since I started the game as a cleric. I'm not sure what level I am, I think in the mid thirties but I'm surprised I'm finding it so difficult to get summoned. I ought to try some of the other bosses but I'd very much like to help someone with the Bell Gargoyles, two against one just isn't fair!

Not to rub salt in the wound, but I've had no trouble getting summoned either.  I most recently did several Sif runs at 20k a pop.  Huzzah!  I have no understanding of how their servers operate.

I tried to kill Shiva's bodyguard and got axed.  It felt wrong, especially since Shiva is pretty cool and one of the few NPC's who isn't completely insane.  Now I don't have the Darkwood Grain Ring, and I've betrayed a covenant.  Well, the price for absolution isn't too bad.  I think I'll just do without that ring.

Since Xtal won't regale us (much) with his superior PvP exploits, I'll bore you with mine.  After doing a fair bit of invading as a forest hunter, I can say it's not that great.  Mainly it's high-level players farming forest hunters for loot.  Ironically, the most fun I had was while doing my Sif runs.  I got summoned by a guy who wanted help doing PvP against the forest covenant.  We took out several invaders before a really high level one got us both.  So I was in the forest covenant, getting summoned by someone else to help him kill forest covenant.  No penalty.  Not much loot either, but it was good fun.

I've spent some time tying up a few loose ends.  Checked out the Drake Valley and farmed some titanite for weapon upgrades.  Now I've just set foot inside Sen's.

Xtal, any ideas on a good location for coop?  I have several builds of varying level.  My main character is in the low 60's.

Thanks for the Dragon's Dogma rant Steerpike.  I seriously don't mean to pick on the game.  I know nothing about it really.  Capcom does seem to have lost something of late though.  But since it does fall roughly in the same category as the Souls games I was curious for a comparison.

Immediately after making my request, I did some searching for news about the next "Soul-like."  I found some interesting comments from the developers.  One of them said since Dark Souls had so many technical problems he wasn't sure they wanted to burden gamers with another one.  There's probably some Japanese cultural nuance at work there, but nonetheless I just wanted to give the guy a big hug.

Another dev stated that they've been so surprised by the success of the games (since they intentionally made them hardcore, and non-mainstream) that they're looking to really expand on the idea, whatever that means.  Basically the lesson they've taken is that people, not just a tiny niche, really enjoy this style of game.  I believe both have sold over 1.5 million each.  For games such as these that's truly something.

Gregg, Xtal and I have only cooped once and very briefly, against Capra Demon.  We passed PSN messages and had no other communication.  We should try an experiment to see if we can summon one another.

You and Xtal were the first to try it, so it was working at some point right?

I should mention that at times I'll try to summon someone and it will fail, as in I receive a msg stating "summon failed".  Also, the day that Xtal and I cooped, I kept getting failed summons.  Oddly, the opposite, i.e. getting summoned, seems to work better for me.

Also, at times the lag is very bad.  This usually happens when I get invaded though.  Once though I was invading as forest covenant and a guy repeatedly back-stabbed me like 6 times.  I'd get back up and try to run away and would get trapped in the back-stab animation again.  But it did no damage.  Weird stuff like that.

Pokey, as I understand it, the advantages to being in the Princess' Guard covenant over Way of White are these:

  • Upon joining you receive the Ring of the Sun Princess (increases miracle synergy - note: you can leave the covenant and still use this ring, but I haven't found it very useful, at least not with so many other useful rings; would best be used if you were going into a boss fight, heavily stacked on miracles- you could pair it with the Ring of the Sun's Firstborn to maximize the effects of a few miracles, I think.)
  • The only way to use the miracles Bountiful Sunlight and Soothing Sunlight (you'll loot these in the Duke's Archives) is to be part of this covenant, although that may be irrelevant before you are in NG+, because they are both in the top 3 as far as the miracles with the highest faith requirement: 36 and 48 respectively.
  • This last point is simply hearsay, but it had initially been rumored, nearer to the release of Dark Souls, and hence during a sort of "information dark age," that being a member of the Way of White would decrease the chance of having your world invaded. It was later rumored that being in this covenant actually increases one's chances of being invaded. I don't believe there is a definitive notion on this matter yet, so take that as you will.

One thing that is commonly accepted: being a member of either Way of White, Princess' Guard or Warrior of Sunlight covenant increases your chance of summoning, and being summoned by, other members of the same covenants.

Oh, also Pokey, if you ever need regular Titanite chunks, now with the Lordvessel it's very easy to farm (albeit slowly): warp to Chamber of the Princess (right outside Gwynevere's door), go back to the hallway with the Royal Knights and take them out. They have a chance to drop chunks. It would be helpful to have a couple loose humanities, or the Covetous Gold Serpent Ring/Symbol of Avarice.

Gregg, now that I've completed the game with my main Miracle Knight character I will go back to my Pyromancer and perhaps catch up with you in Blighttown; we'll maybe get another chance to hook up! Oh, speaking of you Gregg, and British things like tea and crumpets, guess who I'm seeing for the first time tomorrow? Radiohead! Woo finally. Made it before they break up or Thom loses his sanity (moreso). Wish I could have seen them in the Kid A/Amnesiac era ... but oh well.

I need to talk about the end of Dark Souls so desperately. Finish your goddamn diaries, Steerpike! Or just drive to my bloody place and we can talk for hours and hours and days and years. I'll supply beer. I can only survive on the excellent EpicNameBro videos for so long! (Have you watched his YouTube series? It's seriously awe-inspiring how much this guy loves Dark Souls, and he validates a lot of thoughts in my head.) I can't wait to see what your last diary has in store-- no pressure!

I don't want to spoil it for anyone else.... but... urge... to... talk....... rising.....!

Seriously, how are FromSoft SO bloody brilliant? Here are two board rooms of differing brilliance (sorry, I'm going into high babble mode here):

Board Room #1: Blizzard Inc. Part 1 - November, 2003

Blizzard guy 1: Alright guys, It's been two years since Lord of Destruction... I think we can all say D2 as a whole was a huge success, no?

Blizzard guy 2: But what about all the Stone of Jordan economy imbalance, and the whole "Corruption Rune +7 to all skills" fiasco...thing, hasn't that sullied the whole Battle.net experience of what D2 online was supposed to be about?

* crickets *

Blizzard guy 2: I'm so fired, aren't I?

* everyone in the room nods *

Blizzard guy 1: Okay everyone, so back to business: we need to get cracking on D3; our Warcraft MMO team is 1 year away from release, and we estimate that should peter out and die within 12-24 months due to Lineage and EQ2 simply massacring our game. We'll need to publish a follow up shortly after Warcraft MMO fades to capitalize on our rabid fanbase, who will be quite bored by then. This gives us, at most, a 3-year window to release. I know it seems ages away, but we need to hit the Holiday 2006 release season - and if it's possible summer 2006 to beat the rush, agreed?

* everyone in the room nods in agreement *

Board Room #1: Blizzard Inc. Part 2 - July 2006

Blizzard guy 1: Holy rofflecopters, so I get out of bed this morning, slip on a pile of money, and then my son comes into the bedroom and drives his solid gold Tonka truck right over my head. Ouch, that smarts!

* polite laughter fills the room *

Blizzard guy 1: * presses intercom button * Jonathan, could you please get the custodial staff in here, there seems to be $20s leaking out of the air ducts. *response* Yes, twenty dollar bills. *response* I know, it was a bad idea, we were wasted, what can I say?? *response* Okay, yes please and thank you. Ahem, so to our first item of business everyone, this is the third time in the last month we've had to discuss this, but I must repeat: whomever is leaving their Porsche in the underground car wash, this is NOT OK. You can't just park in there; the Blizzard Code of Conduct clearly states that: "any and all employees are entitled to one (1) underground car wash per every four (4) hours, free of charge." When you abandon your luxurious company vehicles in the car wash you are blocking the rights of your fellow employees. Now we know the culprit is someone in this board room, because the peons all got a choice of a Lexus or Ford Tempo-- and on that note, seriously, who are the three people who picked the Tempos? We're Blizzard, for Christ's sake, not some shit show like ... uh ... Activision! Act like it-- So please, let this be your final reminder: no more AWOL car washes. You want a car wash? You stay in your damn car and take it out when it's done!

Alright, next order of business: Diablo 3.

* chatter fills the room *

Blizzard guy 1: I know, I know, people, we don't need to do shit for the rest of our lives, we can milk World of CashCraft for the rest of time, but seriously, there will be blood if we don't ever release this game. Do you know how many personalized death threats Samwise has received? It's ugly, people. We've got to crack down on development; If there can be a Starcraft 2 then dammit there can and will be a Diablo 3. Summer 2009, folks. Mark the date, that's when we release; now get cracking.

Board Room #1: Blizzard Inc. Part 3 - May 2012

Blizzard guy 1 (disheveled and out of breath): It's done. It's out. Let us never speak of the last 9 years of development hell again. In the end it was worth it, we've created the perfect game.

Blizzard guy 2 (poorly clothed, and frightened): But sir, we spent so much time focusing on developing a legitimate story that the gameplay didn't evolve past what it was in D2. Even worse, the story aspect is just a whole lot of fluff on top; it's cute, if boring at best.

Blizzard guy 1: What do you mean it didn't evolve?! You just walk over gold now and it picks itself up. YOU DON'T EVEN HAVE TO CLICK.

Blizzard guy 2: But sir, I-

Blizzard guy 1: Best! Game! Ever!

Board Room #2: From Software Part 1 - October 2009

FromSoft guy 1: Great work everyone, Demon's Souls has made it to America and we think it's going to be a hit. Now let's all take a well-deserved vacation!

FromSoft guy 2: Sir?

FromSoft guy 1: Yes, FromSoft guy 2?

FromSoft guy 2: I was thinking... a nice vacation would be great, but don't you agree it would be more rewarding to immediately begin development on effortlessly crafting a spiritual successor to Demon's Souls; something familiar yet magnificently different?

FromSoft guy 1: Hmm, you're right. Cancel the vacation everyone, let's blow some more minds.

Board Room #2: From Software Part 2 - October 2011

FromSoft guy 1: Well that was easy! Anyone tired?

FromSoft guy 2: Nope.

FromSoft gal 3: Nope.

FromSoft guy 4: Nope.

FromSoft gal 5: Nope.

FromSoft guy 1: OK, Nacho time!

tl;dr - Souls games = awesome. Other games = frown

Ha ha!  You sure make D3 sound underwhelming.

Truly, From has got some serious chops.  I've never played one of their games before Demon's Souls, but they've won my adoration.  If it's true that the Japanese gaming industry is in trouble, I think we can safely say "except From."

In the time it took me to write that post (which I apologize for, it's so long and terrible) there were 4 more posts made. Tee hee.

To begin: Pokey, did you free Logan from his cell in Sen's Fortress? If you did and he's not at Firelink... that is odd. He should be sitting close behind Griggs. Once Anor Londo is done it may be a good time to try The Catacombs/Tomb of the Giants or New Londo. I went first to the Duke's Archives, but only because after poking my head in the place in the high 70s it didn't seem too difficult. If I had to rate the areas, I'd say overall New Londo was easiest, then the Duke's Archives, while the Tomb of the Giants and Demon Ruins/Lost Izalith had a fair share more treachery.

Botch: ha, yes, let me regale you with the exploits of my PvPing. It goes about like this:

"Spirit of vengeance xtal84 has invaded"

"Spirit of vengeance xtal84 has been slain"

"Spirit of vengeance xtal84 has invaded...but it's not really cause for concern"

"Spirit of vengeance xtal84 has been slain...so many times"

"Spirit of vengeance xtal84 has invaded; proceed to his location for free souls"

"Spirit of vengeance xtal84 has been slain; warning: consuming his souls may actually make you weaker"

To summarize, I suck at PvP; or rather, if I put my rose-tinted glasses on I can say that other people who are not me seem to excel at backstabbing me in PvP, but that is not a mark of how poorly I play the game.

Regarding the Dark Wood Grain Ring, you can certainly survive without it; it has its uses in PvE, but I believe its ubiquity among players is recognized for its PvP uses.

What kind of build is your character in the 60s, Botch? Is it that thief-type fellow I played with? If so, you're probably travelling light anyway, and the ring would not provide as much benefit to you as others. I agree with you, it's a pain to obtain, and I don't think I'd go through it again. I'm just an uber completionist and like to get everything and discover everything and do everything on my first character/playthrough of a game. Hell, look at my trophies, I've made the best weapon of all but one type, and obtained every spell, pyromancy and miracle in the game on my one character. And if you planned on doing NG+ with that character, you'd only have to get it the one time. That was my thinking anyway.

So yes, tell me about your build, I'm curious what rings you use now, and such.

I found the best, most surefire co-op location in the game to be the second bonfire in the Duke's Archives. I was in the high 70s up to the high 80s and getting summoned regularly there (moreso in the 70s though). The run through the Crystal Cave and then to Seath will, all in all, as a phantom net you probably 45,000+ souls (30k are from Seath) in no more than 15 minutes.

The following is a cheap little trick I learned from the wiki, which works as either a phantom or host: right as a boss' health is depleted and the animation begins where they fade into ether hop into your inventory and, if you have the items, equip the Symbol of Avarice on your head and the Covetous Silver Serpent Ring. There is a pause before you obtain the souls from a defeated boss, so in that time if you equip these two items you will increase your intake by 40%. So instead of getting 60,000 souls from Seath you would get 84,000. Sneaky, underhanded? Perhaps, but I love that little tricks like this in Dark Souls (and Demon's) exist. And if you're doing phantom co-op runs for humanity and souls, why the heck not use a small advantage?

So yeah, maybe when you gain a few more levels, Botch, head to the Duke's Archives. I started it around level 77 or 78 and found it modestly challenging, so if you go in at 65 it should be good. That was a great place; also excellent was Anor Londo, the first side of the main bridge. Anor Londo perhaps provides the most unique scenarios for co-op because if you are summoned to another world you don't know what to expect: that person could be through the whole level and taking you directly to help them fight Ornstein and Smaugh, or they could just be starting, and want you to take them through the entire city. Alternatively, you could be summoned to help someone fight the optional boss Gwyndolin; lastly, you could be summoned to someone's darkened Anor Londo; I'm unsure of the goal in that instance, because I don't think you can darken Anor Londo without defeating O&S; anyway, I'm nearing spoiler territory there so I'll leave it at that.

The Catacombs were rubbish for summons, I didn't summon anyone there, was only invaded. New Londo Ruins was an anomaly for me in that I didn't see a single summon sign in the entire place until the boss fog gate (summoned 1 player, plus Witch Beatrice) nor was I invaded, and I did the whole area in human form, in one sitting.

In the 60s I'd say your best bet for co-op is Anor Londo. In fact I'd say you're probably at the apex of co-op goodness.

My Pyromancer is going to catch up to you guys. More jolly co-op, please!

I'm really enjoying doing summons. The last one in Anor Londo, we went through the whole city starting at the chapel with the ninjas. I don't think it took more than 15 minutes. They killed Smough first, which made it a bit tougher, but we still got him. Then I was summoned for the Gaping Dragon and we killed him easily. I also got summoned for the Iron Golem but got careless and fell to my death. Will try that one again. This was all at about 60-62.

Xtal, I did free Logan from Sen's Fortress. Griggs greeted me saying that Logan was right there and when I tried to buy from him, he said "see Logan", but on the second try, he sold to me. Maybe Logan left early. I think the benefits of Princess' Guard wouldn't be useful to me. I think I will try New Londo after doing a run on those Knights. They haven't dropped anything yet, but I have the ring and 2 humanities.

Gregg, you may be a bit high for the Gargoyles. I came across this list, which recommends 20-30.

Undead Burg ( 5 – 10 )
Undead Parish ( 10 – 20 )
Lower Undead Burg ( 20 – 30 )
The Depths ( 20 – 30 )
Blighttown ( 30 – 40 )
Quelaag’s Domain ( 35+ )
The Catacombs ( 30 – 50 )

The Great Hollow ( 50+ )
Ash Lake ( 50+ )
Darkroot Garden ( 20+ )
Darkroot Basin ( 35+ )
Valley of Drakes ( 40 – 60 )
Undead Asylum Revisited ( 30 – 40 )

Sen’s Fortress ( 40+ )
Anor Londo ( 45+ )
Painted World of Ariamis ( 60+ )
New Londo Ruins ( 60+ )
The Duke’s Archives ( 60+ )

The Abyss ( 50 – 70 )
Crystal Cave ( 50+ )
Tomb of the Giants ( 70+ )
Demon Ruins ( 60+ )
Lost Izalith ( 75+ )
Kiln of the First Flame ( 60 – 80 )

Heavy end game SPOILERS follow. I am posting this mainly for discussion with Mr Steerpike (or anyone else who completed the game, or just LOVES to read spoilers).

A few things about of the end state of my game, around which we must talk!

Whereas your diaries mention Solaire sort of losing his mind and you never seeing him again, in my case Solaire did seem very distraught that his quest had failed, but I did see him one more time after the Demon Ruins/Lost Izalith: When I first tried to make my way through the Kiln of the First Flame in human form I saw a summon sign for Solaire! I didn't use it because I still don't understand fully how they work, and I was afraid if I did it before finishing off the black knights I may get him killed and then lose the chance to summon him. Of course, as I went to clear the rest of the black knights from the level I was invaded and killed. When I restored my humanity I simply found other players to summon; I was a bit sad that I didn't bring Solaire though. We had been through much: Bell Gargoyles, Gaping Dragon, Centipede Demon (oh how he saved my hide, there).

I've heard there is a "good" ending for him ... though I don't know if it's mine where he simply lives long enough to be summoned for Gwyn. My guess is no, since he still seemed very blue the last time we spoke. But as I learned from the end of the game ... what is good and what is evil ... well, it's not quite clear at all, and the last scene when I linked the fires really just-- excuse the pun-- lit up my mind with ideas on what is what and who is who.

Having beat the game I felt comfortable exploring a few more things I'd kept away from myself on the wiki and YouTube to avoid spoilers. I wondered where I'd missed the one covenant, and now I know: there is a second primordial serpent! Kaathe. I need to meet him on another playthrough, but the road to do so seems atypical. How would anyone discover him naturally? You'd have to really hate talking to Frampt.

So yeah ... linking the fires and burning to cinder in the process ... I suppose I've succeeded Gwyn, only to assume his role of keeping the flame. But is keeping the flames lit a good thing? What is a good thing in Dark Souls? I don't know anymore. I don't think there is a good ending. Even the wonderful Solaire's motives were never revealed to me. I think that aside from a few NPCs who could be seen as noble, or at least unselfish (Laurentius, Quelana, Ingward) the only genuinely good people encountered in Dark Souls are the brave warriors of Catarina: Siegmeyer and Sieglinde. It was devastating then to discover, upon my entry to Ash Lake, off in the distance what appeared to be one knight of Catarina standing over another's body. I raced over to them wondering what had happened ... the last time I saw Siegmeyer he seemed okay, taking a nap in Lost Izalith after we jumped into a pit of giant venus fly trap things together. He roared his battle cry while I dispatched the demons ... we finally got to do battle together! He said he would take a nap (I figured he could survive it since I offered him some Purple Moss earlier) and so I left him in peace. The last time I spoke with Sieglinde she said she'd found her father. Ah, all was well. She disappeared from Firelink Shrine and that was that. Happily ever after. Until Ash Lake. So I raced over wondering who was who. Then I spoke to the slouched bulbous figure:

"Oh, father. Dear father." ... *sob*

Siegmeyer!!! NooooooOOoOoOoOOoOoooooOOOOO!!!!!

The only good man in Dark Souls, lost.

Those aren't tears, there's just something caught in my eye.

If being wrong's a crime I'm serving forever

Success with  the Giant Knights. I got a great shield and a titanite chunk on my first try. I need to go back to the asylum to try for the titanite slab and also upgrade my Fire Claymore in the catacombs.
