Alas it wasn't Abacus or Quicken.
It was made for computers running CP/M, and was ported to a MS-DOS format, and to the humble (but absolutely rockin') C64.
On the AppleMac it was Microsoft's first GUI spreadsheet.
Bill Gates even said numerously in '85 that it made more money on the Mac than any other system.
It was almost before my time - I just happen to use excel pretty heavily now, and was curious to see what the program of the Devil evolved from.

No, not Paradox, which looks like it was released in 1985. The last syllable of it's name is 'plan'. It's wiki entry has a DOS pic and a C64 pic, which I'll post after it's guessed, so that all may witness the horror.

Pro-Plan? No, wait, I think that's a dog food. [Image Can Not Be Found] [Image Can Not Be Found]
As if you couldn't tell, I ain't gots no idea. "Take over the world plan." "Richest in the world plan." Optiplan? ManagePlan? Gimme all your money plan?
Sorry Jarrod, I'm just not up on MS history.

My next guess was going to be Visicalc, but your hint now precludes its being correct.
Taxplan? Workplan? Moneyplan? Calcplan? Can you tell I'm guessing? 😛
It's a great and obscure trivia question, and I'm all atwitter to see the answer. I was there back in the day, and I don't remember any Microsoft spreadsheet prior to Excel. I never encountered an actual Mac until well into the 1990s, though.
You're showing your age xtal (whatever it may be). Atwitter is a fine old word in use for almost 200 years. Can SpellCheck say that?
I didn't intend to hurt your feelings though. I like young people - especially if they are tech-literate. I learn much from them. Most people my age are so, well, OLD, as in stodgy. All past and present FFC and TR company excepted, of course.

Better to be atwitter than a twit, I'm sure [Image Can Not Be Found] I always liked 'discombobulated' which very, very occasionally pops up in contemporary media from time to time.
I thought for sure someone would just do a wiki search for Excel, scroll down to the history section and see what they could see.
The first letter is 'M', though not for Money (they probably were trying to be a bit more subtle than that).
Should I just post the Wiki link already, and hang my head in shame? What does one do when a trivia question overstays its welcome?
@Spike - I don't know your age, so please don't take this the wrong way, but Elders + Computers = Rock On! There are apparently underground groups of retirees here in Aus who are learning to hack and crack computers in order to get around the proposed (draconian) web filters that the government are trying to put in place.

Not an elder yet, just a middler at a hair's breadth from 60, but I've noticed that many people my age, including some that I've known for years and years, have forsaken their 1960's attitudes in favor of more conservative ones. Damn. We were supposed to be different. I applaud those older hackers.
I don't "Wiki" before, only after - unless I'm asking a question. I like banging my head against the wall.

Eventually either Jen or I will hit on the correct answer purely by trial and error, emphasis on the error. But it's fun.
MasterPlan? MSBudgetPlan? MasterBudgetPlan? MonsterPlan? MicroBudgetPlan? MicroManagePlan? MasterMoneyPlan? MicrosoftMoneyPlan? MicrosoftBudgetPlan? Microsoft Spreadsheet Plan? Manage Life Plan? Manage Your Money Plan? Manage Money Plan? MS Financial Plan?

My gosh. The name of the program must have been the most cleverest, most unique, most forward thinking in the history of program names. Apparently the likes of us can't even begin to conceive of its fabulousness. [Image Can Not Be Found]
Magical Money Plan? Monsterously Buggy Accounting Plan? MS Spreadsheet Plan? Microsoft Finances Plus Plan?
