From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M.....s_in_space: "The first ever monkey astronaut was Albert, a rhesus monkey, who on June 11, 1948 rode to over 63 km (39
miles) on a V2
rocket
. Albert died of suffocation during the flight."

There are no words to describe how pleased I am that there's a Wikipedia entry titled "Monkeys in Space."

Is my medal revoked? Did Albert actually become deceased in space or was he within our glorious atmosphere?

Wikipedia reports that Laika was "the first orbital death," and I think officially orbit starts at around 90 miles. V2 rockets couldn't reach space.

Folks, my trivia concocting skills are naught. Instead, I offer an old, simple riddle. I've always liked riddles.

He who makes it has no need of it. He who buys it has no use for it. He who uses it has no knowledge of it. What is it?

*phew* my guess after that would have been 'love'...  but it just wouldn't have fit as snuggly.

Here's a riddle for Stephen King fans - When's a door not a door?

I don't know what it has to do with Stephen King, but okay. (I am not a fan and thus not in the know.) Might I just say, though, I think asking an ancient riddle is a huge copout on the question-asking [Image Can Not Be Found][Image Can Not Be Found]

Are you looking for the maker's name or just the tool?

If the latter I'll say...... electronic hammer?  (Which went horribly awry, I can only assume?)  [Image Can Not Be Found]

Wow Jen.  Good question with so many possible answers.  I'm tempted to say "windmill" (powered by wind) or "grinding mill" (powered by water).

But I'm-a gonna guess "saw".   There was a heck of a lot of wood to be sawn back in the olden days.

Hrmm... something steam powered?  I'm thinking maybe something in large commercial use, like a rivet-gun?  Or one of those toad-thumpers to lay down bitumen?

@ Jen - yep, it's a huge cop-out.  I don't have a lot of questions in me, let alone answers!

Is there no way I can completely delete a post after I make it?

Jarrod, TAP and FFC before it have long done trivia.  I have 2 great

sources for questions that I've used (maybe ad nauseum) in the past.

1.  Almost every day I look at the home page of Wikipedia.  There is

usually some interesting article that has me clicking on links to learn

more.  It isn't hard to formulate a good question from something I read

there.  I'd always try to pick a topic which would allow me to ask a simple question that might be not too hard to answer.

2.  For several years I played an on-line graphic puzzle game called

The Stone.  Many of my questions here came from topics there.  There

were 216 puzzles in the original game and there were almost 500 puzzles

in a fan-made game called The Stone Unturned.  Now you can find all these puzzles archived and ready to be played, and yet more

hundreds of these puzzles available, on a site called Scarecrow's Field.

They are huge fun.  All of the 900 or so puzzles of this type are now

hosted at Scarecrow's Field.  Below is an image of one of this type of puzzle.

The idea is that you guess what answer the puzzle creator is looking for

by making guesses about what you see in the image(s).   After you guess you will be told if you are close, closer or have the correct answer.  Then you get an answer page explaining the topic.   All the puzzles

are free to play.  You just need to register at Scarecrow's Field.

There is a good forum for getting help when you're stuck on a puzzle.

It's a low-key, friendly site. The players and puzzle creators (yes, new puzzles are being created on a regular basis) live all over the world so there is great variety in subject.

http://www.scarecrowsfield.com/

If you want more info just PM me.

To maybe pique your interest, the puzzle below is about Isambard Kingdom Brunel, the Great Western Railway, and Swindon, England.  The answer to the puzzle is Swindon.  You could look it up on Wikipedia!

P.S.  This image came out much smaller than I intended and so you can't see much detail (The image in the upper left hand corner is of a ham sandwich, which does figure in the story, oddly enough).  Zoom in from your browser toolbar and it should be clearer.  Or better yet, just go to Scarecrow's Field and see for yourself.

Spike, your Scarecrow's Field pic doesn't show to the world at large, and your LittleMonkey.jpg just shows the path to your computer desktop, including your first name.

Re the trivia question, not a saw. I meant the first electrically powered tool, just to clarify. (I got this one from one of those pop-up facts on the Science Channel.)

So I see, Jen.  I thought I went back and deleted that.  This forum software is not very kind when it comes to images.  I never had much trouble with the old forum software.

Maybe Steerpike can delete post #299.  I sure can't.

Jen, do you mean that the image, small as it is, is not visible to you at all?  I can see it, but it's much smaller than it was when I previewed it.

So, Trivia:  I'll guess drill.
