I picked up Stalker: Clear Sky. Couldn't resist it at $2.49 and I have been wanting to revisit the game world even if it will be familiar territory.

This is full-scale ridiculous.  I know Steam has its detractors, and the whole digital distribution thing doesn't sit well with many people, but good grief!  I'm having trouble seeing the bad parts here.  I picked up Amnesia for $4.99...so far.

I grabbed LA Noir and Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands this morning. Steam is just too easy.

I just picked up FTL for $4.99.  It's such a neat little game.  I like the resource management and the scale is not so overwhelming.  Like Oregon Trail in space.  And as others have said, the music is very catchy.  Sort of reminds me of that old Lucasarts game Koronis Rift.  Now that is one I'd love to see remade.

I picked up FTL also, it sounds pretty fun.  I've never really played any rogue-likes before, but this one really caught my imagination.

I picked up Risen 2 today. I liked the first game and I love anything that resembles Gothic. I would have gotten Hitman Resolution too, but will have to wait till I get Win 7.

Not a Steam sale...but this now seems to be the dumping ground for general sale stuff, so...attention!

I've never heard of "groupees" before but right now they have an incredible sale of Wadjet Eye games going on right now. You can get a whole pile of games for just a dollar, or for five you can have almost their entire catalog.

As I type this, the sale will last for about another 33 hours...

Tomb Raider is 50% off this weekend.  I picked it up, although frankly I originally had no intentions of playing this one.  I heard some good things about it recently though.

50% off... that's hard to ignore...

Damn you Steam.

NO! I must be strong. My Deadly Premonition director's cut arrived yesterday and I have plenty of other games. I'll wait until the holidays when it's even cheaper. In the meantime, Botch, please do let us know what you think!

Resist the sales. Resist.......the sales. * Exhale *

Ahhhh.

See, when I want a new game that costs new game money, I take a deep breath and open my drawer of console games and look at all the untapped gems in there. Also known as The Backlog. Or just The Log.

For example, two nights ago I began playing Silent Hill 2. This helped me resist the urge to visit EB Games and buy Soul Sacrifice. As a bonus: the first hour of Silent Hill 2 was just....so utterly intense. I can't say that literally nothing happened, because that would be false, but almost nothing happened. One hour of just...walking. And still it managed to be completely engrossing. And terrifying. I think it's going to be a good game. It also looks pretty damn good for 2001. Alan Wake most definitely found some inspiration there. (I've never played a Silent Hill game before, though I have heard this is the best one.)

I played Silent Hill 2.  It's the only Silent Hill game I've ever played but it seemed the right place to start.  Excellent game.  Very much in the psychological horror vein.  Some of the things you see are just...disturbing.  Yeah, that first hour - slowly building up the tension.  Brilliant.  Enjoy!

What platform are you playing on?  I got the Xbox1 version.

EDIT:  What is it with you guys and your willpower and stuff?  What was it Weird Al said?  "Yo man, Ding-Dong.  Ding-Dong!"

Aside from Dishonored, I've been very good with holding back the purchases. Oh, and Monaco. Tomb Raider was tempting but... pfft, I've got plenty of other games to be playing. Funny, Dishonored and XCOM were released around the same time last year and there I was a couple of weeks ago deliberating over which one to play. I started XCOM then couldn't help myself and jumped into Dishonored. Finished it earlier this week and was very impressed with it -- so many nice details in that wonderfully realised world, and the controls and UI are so slick. I very much intend on picking up the DLC but I'm toying with the idea of playing it again as a psychopathic nutter. I don't usually play games again but apparently it's quite a different experience if you play more chaotically, not just mechanically, but narratively as well...

Oh and xtal, I too have not played a Silent Hill. Let me know how you get on with the second one because I would very much like to experience it at some point. What version are you playing? That is, on which platform?

I'm playing it on PS2. I forget where I found the copy I have; probably in a used bin somewhere, but I had heard good things, and I always remember it as being one of Yahtzee's favourite games, and he is quite a curmudgeon, so yeah.

I'm trying to think...aside from Infinite I don't believe I've bought a new game in 2013. I think the driving factor in that is signing up for PlayStation+ and getting so many games for free. The Vita Uncharted game, Gravity Rush, Closure (which is still part of my backlog), The Cave, Infamous 1 and 2 (still in The Log), Little Big Planet, Mega Man 9 ... I've got such value from that I've pretty much ignored new stuff for a while.

That and...you know, Dark Souls, which I'm still enthused as ever about. (Though post patch 1.08 the screen flickering glitch is back (only when you play online) and it makes co-op quite frustrating, what with vanishing signs - but I've heard Bamco are aware and From is working on a fix. Strangely, it didn't break with 1.08 directly, but a PS3 system patch.)

Oh, also: Sleeping Dogs replaces Demon's Souls as part of the PS+ free games collection as of today. They're including, it seems, at least 1 over-75 Metacritic game per month, while the filler is more middling stuff. But I've heard a lot of great stuff about Sleeping Dogs, and most of the complaints have sounded like bias that it's not GTA. We shall see!

Lastly, the latest Humble Bundle is a Double Fine bundle! Costume Quest, Psychonauts, Brutal Legend and Stacking, plus Broken Age if you throw enough money in the pot. http://www.humblebundle.com/

So do you, er, keep the games that are free on PS Plus? Or do they go away when their time is over? Seems like a dumb question, but...

I'm still on the fence about it, mostly because I'm lazy, but they're making it seem like a steal.

I watched a good friend play Silent Hill 2 for several hours on her PC. This was years ago. We had a lot of fun. The game is creepy as hell and it's a good side-by-side co-op experience, since the non-player can easily get involved in the puzzle solving and such.

The free games on PSPlus are yours for keeps...so long as you keep your subscription up.  That may sound like a bad deal for some, but considering that it's $50 per year, and you could obtain a LOT of games in one year...

I started my subscription as one of those three month (or so) free promotions in a boxed game.  So trying it out was risk-free.  I decided to keep it when they had a promotion earlier this year.  If you bought a one-year subscription, you received four (I think) extra months.

I don't regret it for a moment, unlike Xbox Live.

Seconded, you get much more for your dollar than with Xbox Live.

PS+ - $50/yr - Gets you: Constant discounts, exclusives (mainly full game trials), and free games. A great deal, but entirely optional, as you lose nothing by not signing up for it. Plus the PS Store offers Day 1 Digital, which XBL doesn't.

XBL - $60/yr - Gets you: the "privilege" of playing games online. Potentially up to 2% back on your purchases (if you have a gamer score over 25,000..........)

Speaking of Microsoft, I read Cliffy B's blog on that Orth guy leaving Microsoft right after the "deal with it" thing; I liked his take on it, which more or less defended this Orth fellow. Read here.

[...] that it's not GTA.

Thank fuck for that!

The Double Fine bundle is mighty tempting, if only for their new game, which looks rather lovely, and Brutal Legend, which is still home to probably my favourite game world ever. And I'm not even a 'fan' of metal. I've no doubt that the PC version will look even more incredible too. The game itself is excellent and fluid and effortlessly cool and charismatic, if a little repetitive with its side quests. The RTS sections are brilliant in my humble opinion and aren't explored nearly enough in the single player. Unfortunately I've never played the multiplayer which is apparently what the game was originally intended to be. Stacking is also a little charmer but does outstay its welcome if you're intent on finding all the solutions and dolls as Hailey and I did. I only played the demo of Costume Quest and it was cute, but I'm not sure how it would fare as a full game. Psychonauts is amazing save for the last few levels which are excruciatingly horrible. They're without doubt some of the most infuriating levels I've ever played in a game. Well done Double Fine and fuck you little Coach Oleander.
