If you aren’t already aware, news is finally trickling out of ArenaNet about Guild Wars 2. As a sequel to their fabulous episodic Guild Wars series (originally announced alongside the final Guild Wars expansion Eye of the North in 2007), and having been waiting for what seems a life time, my excitement level has now reached dizzying heights.
Still taking place in the fantasy world of Tyria, 250 years after the players defeated the Great Destroyer in the Eye of the North, five elder dragons that slept beneath the continent have now awoken, to unleash havoc on the unsuspecting world.
Breaking the MMOG mould by adopting a non charged payment model; doing away with monthly fees entirely, Guild Wars drew a firm following through its single player narrative experience, and it’s unrivaled player versus player combat. As the second most popular MMOG in North America, only recently toppled by Dungeons and Dragons (now free-to-play) there is little wonder then that those like me, who have a taste for online fantasy frolics, cannot wait for the early 2011 release date.
I won’t go into too much detail about Guild Wars 2 (I’ll save the column inches) but you can find all the newly announced information you need on the Guild Wars 2 news blog here, alongside some excellent in-game footage and confirmation that the game will still be free-to-play, while a fantastic set of interviews from the beloved staff over at Rock Paper Shotgun can be found here.
If any of you fancy some Guild Wars fun in the meantime, feel free to drop me a line.
