PlayStation LifeStyle, Sony’s web portal for all things PlayStation, has posted very early footage of Team ICO’s next game, Project Trico, destined for the PS3. The footage is just under 4 minutes, but in that short period of time managed to make me feel all warm and squishy inside… either that or I’m coming down with something.
Since this is early days yet, the human character doesn’t have a lot of detail; however, the backgrounds and baby gryphon more than make up for it. When I bought my PS2, it was solely for the purpose of playing ICO. Project Trico could be the game that convinces me to make the jump to a PS3.
Until then, I want my own baby gryphon.
A lot of us have waited for this tantalizing video for a long, long time. Like you, Toger, I’ve held off on the PS3 waiting to see what Team Ico would do with it. And it looks like they’re working hard to at least try and continue their storied tradition.
Well, I think a PS3 is about to appear in my house as well. Between MGS4, Demon Souls, this and God of War III I think I can justify this kind of expenditure after all (to myself if not to my wife).
That said, this teaser is notably more conventionally ‘cute’ than anything we have so far seen in Ico or SotC. I am not saying this is a reason to worry… yet. But, yeah, this is a little more ‘Disney’ than ‘classic team Ico – cold, yet dignified’ kind of beauty than I have expected.
They’re so good at emotional relationships. I’m interested to see them tackle one that’s more (and this is gonna sound weird) conventional than those of the past – the little boy and the griffon were so devoted to each other, much like Wander and Agro, but it looks like the griffon will have a much more direct role in the game. One site pointed out that it basically serves as Yorda, Agro, and a Colossus all rolled into one.
“Cold, dignified beauty.” That’s a great way to describe the feel of their games thus far.
As for PS3, in addition to those already mentioned, I’ve also got my eyes on Folklore, Valkyria Chronicles, and Uncharted. Just have to wait for that rumored price cut, I guess. 🙂
Oh, yes, Valkyrie Chronicles too, that sounds like someting I could possibly lose myself in. Uncharted is like Tomb Raider crossed with Gears of War which, strangely enough doesn’t sound like my coup of tea. But Disgaea 3 is EXACTLY my cup of tea. I just have to see if stores in my country have any more of those backward compatible models left, considering I have a TON of PS2 games at home..
Back to Trico: yes, Griffon does sound like Yorda, Agro and Colossus rolled into one and, make no mistake, I am VERY excited about this game. Team Ico has managed to actually take existing genres and turn them upside down so far, so I hope that this game does NOTHING LESS.
ah jeeze… i really didn’t want to buy the PS3 as i’m stubborn and still have too many PS2 games to keep me occupied… but seriously? i knew in my heart that a game would show up and i’d just have to spring the bucks… looks like Trico is that game… god damit all to hell… grumble…
I had zero interest in getting a PS3 until I saw this. I have to have this game so I guess I’m going to have to get one. I hope there is a price drop coming up soon. As an enticement, it does make a good Blu-Ray player.
The lack of backward compatibility in the new models really cheeses me off. I suppose I could grab a 60-gig model on eBay, but then I’m losing storage space. And unlike 360 games, the PS3 really requires all those gigs, since many games require several gigs of files get installed to the HDD. Curses.
