Metroid Prime is one of the worst games I have ever played, I hate it and I hope they round up all copies of it and bury them in the recently vacated spot where all those Atari games were dug up!

I just can't even look at you right now, xtal.  Or think about you or like...you know.  Other verbs.

The bear has been poked!

What I'm playing: Saints Row IV (awesomely hilariously awesome, with far stronger gameplay than its already-solid predecessor; stop what you're doing and get it RIGHT NOW), State of Decay (finally), and X Rebirth (it's complicated).

I played the latest episode of The Wolf Among Us and I'm waffling on what to do next.  Got a lot of games half-started and also discovered 2400 Wii points on my Wii so I've got some old games, too.

That Uncharted 4 teaser got me back in the spirit so I'm back to make some more progress in 3, the last of the four games I haven't finished.

I don't know what it was about Metroid Prime .. I played it in I think late '04 or early '05 ... I was heavily into RPGs at the time and really worn out with shooters and I just hated the controls, which is a big part of any FPS. It goes back to all the stuff I wrote about in that Ico spiel, where there was a time I just didn't understand the appeal of consoles because I thought everything on PC was better. I wasn't trying to go against the grain, I sincerely thought Metroid Prime and other beloved early aughts juggernaut Halo:CE paled so badly in comparison to Half-Life/UT that I just didn't like them. The reasons why other people did like them didn't occur to me, and I think that was fair at the time considering what exposure I'd had.

In retrospect I've gone back and played Halo and see what a solid game it is. Prime I just never went back to, though I still don't think I'd like it.

And yes, I admit it's fun to poke the bear sometimes. I'm sure there's someone out there who hates Fallout and cheese and coffee and all other things I love. Come at me you crazy person!

I've never gotten into Fallout.  I've really really tried the old ones, but came to them late enough that I think they just felt too dated in all they did to appeal to me (and having played some of the D&D games at the time, like Baldur's Gate, which I also didn't care for, I know that that whole isometric RPG genre just didn't do much for me then, either).  And Fallout 3 I like even less, arguably, because Bethesda.

The thing about Metroid Prime - the whole series - is that they are Metroid games before they are shooters, in many ways, with the FPS elements being sort of an incidental fact of the time.  It's a series that will defy every expectation if you compare it to contemporary (or prior) FPS titles because that's just not what the gameplay's about.  I'm not sure I could think of a game further away from Unreal Tournament in fundamental principle than Metroid Prime.

Also, coffee sucks.

I never played Baldur's Gate.  I just assumed I wouldn't like it because of the real-time combat system.  I know you could pause it, but that didn't negate its fundamental tactical flaws.  That is why I tend to prefer turn-based in a party-styled RPG - tactical superiority.  It's also why I loathed Ultima 7 and all of its hellish spawn.  Also why ignoring combat as much as possible in Torment makes it a much better experience.  Hey, let's bash the classics!  I'm game!

I don't think Fallout 1 & 2 have aged well.  I've tried to go back to them and it's just too much.  Kind of like with X-COM.

Here's my biggest gripe against Metroid Prime (and pretty much all other so-called Metroidvanias):  If you're going to make me backtrack, upgraded kit in tow, to places I couldn't reach earlier at least have the decency to respect my time enough to let me take notes, or mark my map.  What Metroid Prime nailed was atmosphere.

Also, people talking about food being better than sex is just stupid.  No food is better than sex.  However, coffee and donuts are in the ballpark.  Those two, and that one slice of cheesecake I had at Cheesecake Factory a while back.

I think the Metroid games usually - and this isn't true of all Metroidvanias by a long shot - make up for the limitations of the map (or entire lack of a map!) with great level design so that it's trickier to get truly lost and not be able to figure out where you had been.  Areas look unique enough to differentiate them in your brain.

Now, Prime I thought had a very good map system for a console game, automatically marking doors with the appropriate colors and so forth and so on.  It didn't help you remember where you'd seen a missile expansion you couldn't get to or something, but when you were not sure where to go next you could usually just look for doors you hadn't opened that corresponded to gear you now had.  Then again, I've never been a big note-taker in game or out; I either remember a thing, or I rediscover it, or I just end up not messing with it (if it's optional).

I'm very much with Dix on a lot of this (yeah, screw that xtal guy). For me the Metroid games have always been about the exploration, the feel and sense of place, the music and the way the disparate parts of the world suddenly start clicking together (in much the same way as the Souls games' environments do). One of the things I really loved about the Prime games was the scanner which allowed you to really dig into areas and suck up the local flora and fauna (as well as have a good ogle at the 3D models in your database). As a seriously slow paced virtual tourist they were perfect for someone like me who spends ages sightseeing. The map system too was fantastic. I used to love getting so close to 100% item completion but not knowing where in the entire world that last secret or two was. That upgrade pick-up noise... I can still hear it now. And y'know, I always liked the controls and jumping in Metroid Prime. The locking on and ability to move your gun independently of the screen worked brilliantly. It was a bit GoldenEye/TimeSplitters in that sense. The platforming always felt really solid to me too, but then again, I've never had a problem with platforming in first person shooters anyway.

As for Fallout, I started playing it a few years ago but got trapped in a corner by Ian. I wouldn't mind returning to it though, that or Fallout: New Vegas. I put loads of time into FO3 but I just got exhausted by its sprawl and wow, Bethesda really know how to bore me with characters, not just in FO3 but in Morrowind as well. Zzzz...

Baldur's Gate I would love to have a go at but again... sprawl... time.

I can't stand coffee. I was in Greece a couple of months ago and on the first morning I was served a lovely looking (and smelling!) coffee with breakfast in the morning sun. I couldn't bring myself to request tea so I tried to drink the coffee. It was like drinking wet ash so I had to stop. Bleurgh!

As for food being better than sex. If I'm really hungry (for food!) then eating can't be beaten. If I'm really hungry for sexy time then sex can't be beaten. If I'm really tired, crawling into bed is the best thing ever. Hell, if I need the toilet badly... you get the idea. It's all relative!

Speaking of X-COM, the long awaited and extremely promising looking Xenonauts was released recently so I'm eager to check that out after Firaxis' effort left me cold. Word on the street says it's really good.

It's still listed as Early Access on Steam for some reason but it's beyond v1.0 now and officially 'finished'.

It was supposed to be funny, you silly Brit. tongue

I'm curious about Xenonauts too.  But for all of the Firaxis game's faults, I really liked the streamlined combat.

Food and sex: it's serious business!

And streamlined shreamlined!

Rather perversely:

Watch the video for a better idea of what OpenXcom does. I feel sorry for the Xenonauts devs, I really do. First, the AAA demake (zing!) by Firaxis, then this.

Looks pretty good.  And I love the music.  And I happen to have a Steam copy of the original.  I don't really like the Xenonauts visuals.  And just to spite you, I'm off to play me some demake. tonguetongue

Well I downloaded and installed OpenXCom, then started up a game on veteran.  First two weeks nothing happens.  Then I sight a UFO, which turns out to be a big honking battleship, which destroys my only two Interceptors.  On my first ground mission, two Cyberdisks and a couple Grays are waiting right outside my Skyranger.  You can guess how it went down.  OpenXCom does not eff about.

Veteran! Hahah, yeah, the infamous difficulty resetting bug from the original game was fixed in OpenXcom long ago so veteran will seriously eff you up.

I've installed it but I'm yet to make a start. Hoping to this week!
