Pssst, Pokey! Portal 2.

Right! I forgot to mention the sequel to Portal, which I loved. I bought it in a sale a couple days ago and looking forward to some thrilling days of gaming. [Image Can Not Be Found]

I see that Amazon has it for $30.  Did you find a better sale?

No. I wanted to buy from Amazon, but got mine from Gamestop for the same price a day before Amazon had the sale.

I just finished it last night. Review incoming. You'll love it!

Girls must really like astronauts, 'cause it says here they get all the tang they want .-  Micheal Kelso - That 70's Show.

After the feeding frenzy that was the last Steam sale, I've finished Alpha Protocol twice, and Singularity once.

Mina Tang, how I love you. You're as beautiful as Kansas in autumn and you can perform outer outer outer joins on whatever encrypted spook database I dig up as fast as I can find it. You wear a somewhat curtailed, erotically sterile, almost 'Spockish'  tunic and I would go to the ends of the world to save you.

To the end of the world a few times, heck sure. I love you. But chutcth (furball). Several several times? Whoa. Sweetie, really?

There are a few misunderstandings floating about. There is stealth here, just not the normal kind. Not the creeping, hide in the shadows so you're not seen kind, but the invest megabucks in your suit and stealth ability until no one can see you a foot in front of their face kind. Sadly, that can happen only after several several level ups, so the aspiring stealther among us will be immediately frustrated.

I'm wondering why Obsidian would have developed a game using so many writing, animation, and dialog resources on such a flimsy shooter base? The well done voice acting, the fairly well produced video segments, and the (seemingly endless) script sits on top of the most elementary shooting mechanics and the dumbest AI I have ever seen. Let's abandon our cover and use of automated weapons so we can get close and deliver some Karate chops. Please don't shoot me until I get close. Oh, and I won't use grenades like those S.T.A.L.K.E.R. guys, that must suck for you.

I'm not too bothered by most versions of checkpoint progress saving. I don't mind rehearsal. Maybe I'm a little bit weird, but I actually enjoy it, as long as it's done fairly. In AP though, game saving is done differently. Cross the threshold for a savegame, and the s/w duly writes a quicksave over the last universal worldwide savegame. If you fail to <esc> out and create a copy, once the next checkpoint is crossed, you can't go back to revisit your decisions, unless you're willing to go back to your own last personal savepoint.

So let's imagine you're finishing the last mission before confronting pure world evil. You're a bitchin', trifle worn, ammo depleted, shower needin', (gad look at that freakin' armour stinkin') dude, and the love of your life calls on the satellite phone and if you fuck up the answer you'll have to replay seventeen minutes of dialog to get the answer you want because it will save the checkpoint automatically without your (and prior to any possible)  intervention after the conversation ends. How do you think you'd respond?

Yeah. Where is my mind.

Singularity. It's over, I guess. I mean with time travel, who knows.

I tell you, I really enjoyed Alpha Protocol. I couldn't finish and had to abandon it due to two key bugs: it didn't lock the mouse to its 3D window, so the game minimized if I ever rotated too far to the right, because I'd wind up clicking the desktop. Once minimized it wouldn't restore, and only turning left was just too Zoolander.

The other was actually worse: in all the inventory, status, and menu screens, after a while there were only two colors: white and slightly-less-white. Couldn't see anything. Couldn't equip properly, look at weapons, do stats, nothin'. I had to stop. And since the game was never patched and sold poorly, fixing what's obviously a rendering issue in a driver patch seemed unlikely. I may go back and give it a whirl, though, because like Helmut I do so love Mina Tang and the writing, dialogue, and overall concept of that game was just boffo.

Singularity!  I too bought that on a Steam sale, but stopped playing when Witcher 2 landed on my desk. I had just gotten the singularity-itizer too. Must go back.

I'm in a bit of a gulch right now. I can't seem to get hooked on New Vegas again; still plodding through Witcher 2 and Crysis 2, not in the mood to play Alice:MR for some reason, and none of my Steam sale games beckon. I still owe Metro 2033 a full play through, though, maybe I'll try that.

I played ~30 minutes of Singularity, then put it on the shelf. Then I sold it 'cause it was stinking up my house. I'm betting I'll adore AP because I almost always love the games that other people hate. [Image Can Not Be Found]

A potential showstopper exists in the pc version of AP in the first five minutes as mentioned with the computer hacking mini-game. As it turns out, this isn't actually all that hard. Neurons will be recruited from other parts of your brain and you will get better at it which probably explains why they included it in the game at all, because at first glance it doesn't seem possible. One problem is that the tutorial mislabels the controls used to finish hacking (it's 'space' to lock the left text phrase, not 'left control'), the other problem is that they show a mouse pointer leading to mouse abuse when you need to keep moving off the screen to lock the right text. I'd guess these play harder on a console, since they are almost completely trivial on the pc from the start to the end and if I lost a little peripheral vision or maybe some sensation in my left hand because of that mini-game, so be it.

I'm finding SpaceChem to be really tricky. I was progressing nicely but am completely stumped on one of the middle problems. Maybe AP recruited some neurons from the '2D chemical bond manipulation and manufacturing thread synchronization' area of my brain.

I finished Arcanum a couple days ago. [Image Can Not Be Found] Yep, the whole thing.

I mostly had fun with it, but there were some things that really pissed me off. Chief among them, my character would not level up past 50. Had I known, I would've spent my last four or five skill points differently. I guess overall it really didn't matter much because I was uber by that time, but still. I was working toward something with my skill points that never came to fruition. [Image Can Not Be Found]

RPS had a pretty thorough talk about The Witcher 2 sometime during the week that just passed. Not done with it yet, Steerpike?

I don't think I'll ever finish the first game ... I just couldn't get into it no matter how intriguing it was. The combat was awful, and just moving around was awkward. I'm sure I'll buy The Witcher 2 for 5 dollars or however cheap it is in some inevitable, upcoming sale.

Last night I finally reached the conclusion of Shadow of the Colossus. Took about two and a half years, but I did it.

If the time between my pre-sixteenth colossus save and post-epilogue save are to be believed, it took me roughly 2 hours to defeat the final colossus. Not the hardest to figure out, but certainly the hardest to actually defeat. I just couldn't execute my plan for such a long time; but I had not one death. I simply kept falling from and re-climbing the hulking giant.

Certifiably insane. I don't think I've ever worked my fingers so hard to complete a game. But I did it. My god it was worth it to finally see the ending. And it was long as hell ... I really wish the option to save before the final cinematic existed so I could re-watch it. Knowing that I have to beat #16 again if I ever wish to view the ending in future (at least not via YouTube) ... that just saddens me.

Patience. This is indeed quite a virtue.

I'd never really heard of Shadow before I came to this website, and I really feel that I've missed out on something great.  Even if I ended up buying the game now, I'm sure it wouldn't match playing it in the time and space when it was initially released.

No, Jarrod, that problem does not apply to Ueda's games. I know what you speak of, and I experience the problem too, but it wasn't even a factor in Ico or Shadow of the Colossus

Heck, I played the former just last year for the first time, as you may recall from my gushing forum post, and it looked fabulously fantastic. And I mean that in the true sense of the word fantastic, not the hyperbolic context in which it's typically used by people reviewing a flavour of ice cream or a pair of shoes. The worlds Ueda and Team Ico create ... they are truly fantastic, and transcend the human desire for high definition eye sex.

Having said that, I am still very excited to experience the high definition eye sex versions of these games, though a small part of me feels they may actually lose a little something in the process. (But just a wee little part of me!)

I'd probably say Ico fits into my #1 or 2 spot, and Shadow of the Colossus probably falls somewhere in the top 5 or 10 as well, on The List. It's never too late!

Finished Deux Ex: Human Revolution last night.

I had fun with it (I must have as that's all I've played for 3 months!)

Assassin's Creed II - done!

I didn't do everything available - the courier and assassination assignments didn't appeal to me after doing one of each. I gave up on locating the glyphs after about the 6th or 7th one because it didn't add anything to the story for me. I was able to complete all but one of the tombs - that last one in Venice with the two swing supports that rotated was my downfall. I simply could not do that special jump well enough in the time allotted. [Image Can Not Be Found]

I spent the majority of my time locating and climbing all the viewpoints just to see each city from that height... and pulling guards off the ramparts just for giggles. I spent so much time climbing buildings that I've caught myself assessing buildings here in SF for climbability. [Image Can Not Be Found] I'm annoyed that I didn't get to spend any time in Rome other than the one mission; although by that time I was pretty much over the whole revenge aspect. Apparently, so was Ezio.

I really enjoyed all the information about the major characters and buildings. I stopped to read the every database entry.

Now I need to play something less sneaky.

You know what might make you cackle, Toger? Brutal Legend, if you haven't played it. Should be about $3 for 360. Bonus!

I wrote a quick review of Brutal Legend in this very thread. My final point about not being able to replay chapters of the game at your leisure is incorrect though, it can be done but I hadn't seen the option for it. Well worth a look in my opinion Toger!

I'll have to give the demo a whirl, although I'm neither a heavy metal nor Jack Black fan. But stranger things have happened. [Image Can Not Be Found]

Finished Bulletstorm three times. I Discovered that the voice of Trishka is done by Jennifer Hale. She has an astonishing  list of voice credits across almost two decades of film and games and provided the voice of my emerald-eyed, black haired-in-a-page-boy-cut,  blue tentacled lady seductress in Mass Effect. And she voiced Fall-from-Grace in Planescape. The voice of General Sarrano is provided by Anthony DeLongis, who also plays the part of Thieves Guild member Mercer Frey in Skyrim.  I thought Sarrano was played with particular joy and energy.

Oh I do so hope there is a sequel.

Yeah I'm not a metal fan either but you can genuinely feel the love for it oozing out of that game. It's infectious and hard not to get caught up in all the creativity, mythology and badassery. I do like Jack Black but he's very reigned in as Eddie Riggs and not at all as crazy as his on-screen persona. It's more the Jack Black that played Po in Kung Fu Panda.
