Oh man, a corrupt save game would probably put me off the series forever. I admire your resilience, Helmut.

Circling back and starting again does have the benefit of showing how the games work. As you say, it's so much faster the second time around. It took me about forty hours of play to get past the Bell Gargoyles the first time; now I can do it in two. Which makes retracing your steps much less painful.

I'm retracing somewhat in Dark Souls II right now, since I've more or less migrated over to my PC build and she was well behind. I may live to regret this move if multiplayer is overrun by griefers.

If you go with Dex, I'll again pipe up for the Balder Side Sword. It's a rare drop in the Gargoyle church area, from the Balder skeletons. A Covetous Gold Serpent Ring (from Sen's Fortress) helps in finding one. This weapon has all the advantages of a sword, the reach of a spear, scales well with Dexterity, and looks awesome.

Not having to fear corrupted game saves in Dark Souls was alone worth the price of admission for PS+ for me (cloud saves). I'm pretty certain a corrupted save occurred to me in Dark Souls at some point. Same thing, unexpected system shut down. Weird thing was I restarted my PS3 and the file was magically un-corrupted. I'm not always that lucky however: I lost my 120-hours-in first Skyrim character forever. That was a significant sidetracking.

If that happened in Dark Souls .... god, I'd be getting drunk and hurling darts at the PS3. I commend you for restarting. As you've clearly learned, when it comes to Dark Souls knowing [what's around the corner] is half the battle.

It would have fixed my problem if I had chosen to restore from the cloud and not vice-versa. I was just scrabbling over a few thousand souls, silly really.

I had been seriously considering tossing it in. My progress after the Lord Vessel had slowed to a crawl and I wasn't enjoying the game very much. As it turns out, the first part of the game is far more fun for me so I restarted a character, and got along really well. The area at the beginning, so hard and long the first time through, is really very compact and goes really fast. I may become a leading world expert in the first 20 minutes, who knows.

I just learned about the different moves from the wiki. I knew the different weapons had different move sets, but didn't realize the size of the set. I thought there were only two moves. I was wondering why my new wanderer character was pulling off some cool stuff coming out of dives, etc. (I think my new (but cheapo) controller may be glitchy in the sticks which helps) Now that I know about that and that holding the B button makes your character run, I SHALL NOT BE STOPPED.

Running is very helpful (and jumping, too). Good luck this time around, Helmut!

Me too.  It always felt more cohesive.

I think I played with the broken straight sword for 20 hours the first time through...

Now that I know about that and that holding the B button makes your character run...

My goodness Helmut...how could we have failed you so completely?

The huge variety of move-sets is one of the great things about this game.  Experiment until you find one that suits you.  My personal favorite Dex weapons are the Iaito and the Scythe (or Gargoyle Halberd, same move-set as the Scythe).

It wasn't until Anor Londo that I figured out that I could run, and that was only because I read about the gap jump to the Vendor in Sen's Fortress. Some things you don't know to ask, and others wouldn't know they needed to tell.

I'll try the various weapons again. I used the uchigatana and one of the black knight swords, a split in strength/dexterity skills that weakened both. I  thought dexterity was linked to my ability to leap around quickly, which is why I was increasing it. I rang the first bell in 2 hrs 31 mins without really being in a rush. So much of the first playthrough was wasted effort. I too, took on the order 40 hours getting to the same point. Knowing how to save resources really compounds in this game.

They did seem to front-load the best areas ... the Burg, Parish, Depths, Blighttown, Sen's, Anor Londo ... all pretty memorable. Then you have the so-so Lost Izalith and Tomb of the Giants.

FromSoftware seem to do a much better job designing ruined castle type areas (Boletaria, Burg/Parish, Painted World, Forest of Giants) than the environment-made crap holes (Demon Ruins, Harvest Valley, Izalith). There are always exceptions: I like the Valley of Defilement for its wretched endlessness.

Can we please have an expansion pack that takes place exclusively in Latria?

Latria: the most atmospheric level in any Souls game?  Certainly the most horror-tinged.

I have nightmares of the guy's soul (Lord Rydell?) in the prison cell ... "Urrrgghhhhhhhhh...Please, help me!"

And the chime sound of those octo-head mages!

And of course 3-2 also has Yurt, basically everyone's introduction to those invisible "side quests." Yurt's armor set is also one of my favourites across all three games. Up there with Onion Bro. smile

Latria really is amazing. It might be the only area in any of the games in which traversing it still feels, for me, uncomfortable.

Okay, I'm playing Demon's Souls this weekend!

Latria.

Yeah.

So atmospheric. Went there after Boletaria 1 at first - just randomly chose it - and it was there that I first "got" the Souls game vibe. The place is so eerie, and there are so many... like... cul-de-sacs of horror. That blobby thing in a nook, just chilling there. The choppy machine from Caligula. The little dude at the desk who you have to kill if you want to beat the Fool's Idol. So much of it just there, no explanation.

I'd forgotten Rydell, though, xtal. "Help me... please... help me..." shiver.

Definitely (deffieantly?) the sound design is a huge part of it.  The thing that really got me was the former noblewoman's singing.  I was terrified of finding out who (or what) was making that sound.

It was the iron maidens and the urns with people in them that creeped me out. And the people just wandering around who kind of cowered before you.

I had a bit of a soft spot for Stonefang, just because it felt so deep and cavernous. All those tunnels that I never had the gall to explore because of those tough bearbugs blocking the myriad passageways. Stonefang was home to two of the hardest bosses for me though: the armor spider and the flamelurker.

There's a very unusual vibe to this playthrough. Last time I was much more patient, and just plodded along through certain sections very repetitively. One side effect of this was that I got to a pretty high level before I really went anywhere. I managed to get a Dark Knight Sword early on, and was very powerful with it. While I'm more capable with the controller now, and had no issues with the tower gargoyles, the Capra Demon is giving me fits. Too tight an area to really dodge effectively, what with the foliage and tight walls continually messing with the camera. It's not even an area you can properly summon helm in. So I find myself farming a ton to get my weaponry ascended properly. I had thought the first dark knight you encounter would always drop the sword.

Is there a built in bonus to your starting weapon? As a wanderer, I have the scimitar and I've noticed that when I used it in the undead burg, I seemed to get more soft humanity than when I use the Katana.

Edit: geggis I think those urns are called sepulchers (although I haven't seen them in the game). In the science fiction version of Inferno, they are in the sixth circle of Hell to house the heretics.

The Capra Demon Barrier, yes. I myself had no problem with him on the first go-round, but he was nearly impossible on subsequent new games. Frustratingly, help is rarely available for summoning there.

The best luck I have is to enter, start moving right for a split second, then bank hard left and gallop up the stairs. The feint should cause the dog to miss its attack and crash into the wall, giving you time to reach the top and turn while it collects itself. Best case then is that Capra Demon's hugeness blocks it momentarily. The second pelts up the stairs but is easier to kill all alone, then you can edge left and do a plunging attack on Capra. Some like to repeat the plunge attack but I find it hard to maneuver in there so I just lay about me and hope for the best. Capra dislikes fire, too, so some pine resin would be handy.

Turned out to be general user unprepared-ness. I just wasn't ready. I wasn't doing enough damage and didn't have the endurance nor vitality to make it. It's a good gatekeeper battle no question. Also, it's around this time down in the darkroot gardens when you can find the wolf ring for added poise, which helps get through the pups with less getting knocked off balance. It seemed to me. I remember the threshold when you can one hit  the souls around the campfire in the burg, it's roughly the same threshold to one hit killing the dogs on the way to the demon, so that just makes it quicker and easier to get back there if you fail. It's also the point where a two handed drop attack does nearly 1/2 the health bar on the demon. Earlier, I was only doing about 10%.

No built-in bonus for your starting weapon.  The Wolf Ring can help immensely against Capra.  Depending on my build, I usually grab it before even Taurus, using the back way to Darkroot.  That also makes it easy to obtain a +5 weapon very early, which also helps to tame Capra.  A shield with good stability is a plus too if you haven't gotten the hang of dodging yet.  I really like that boss fight even though it can feel that the game is being cheap by throwing you in a closet with a goat demon and his dog pals leaping on top of you before you can even get your bearings.

It may be a blessing in disguise that you didn't get the Black Knight Sword this time.  While it's a good starter weapon, it is quickly outclassed by other ones with better scaling.

I can't recall a game where knowing the land is such a benefit. I'm in Anor Londo after 23 hours, a trek that took somewhere around 160 the first time through. Granted some of that was time spent sleeping, waiting in vain for a summons, but still. I'm trying to think of another game where the familiarity bonus is so high. From the gates of Sen's Fortress to Anor Londo with one death, and that because the boulder mechanism reset while I was exploring and I got mashed. The stories will be told, when I am long gone from this world, "He sure was good at Sen's Fortress the second time through."

Well, I'm a Johnny-come-lately to Dark Souls and after over 20 hours I've made it to Undead Parish. Spent most of the game so far in Undead Burg, couldn't get past Taurus Demon so I firebombed Havel to death (which was great fun), found a route through Darkroot Basin/Garden to the Undead Parish boss (who I picked off with arrows - wish I could have done that with Taurus Demon) and FINALLY got to meet Andre. I think I'm going to be camped out here for a while upgrading stuff.

Really enjoyed the diaries, Matt, and very encouraged to hear about how you bumbled through it. This is the first game I've ever used a gamepad on (Xbox 360), and, yeah. Anything more advanced than (i) hold shield up, and (ii) thrust attack is beyond me at the moment, but I'm mostly having fun.

Also, the music at Firelink Shrine gives me a real Miasmata flashback. It sounds so much like the music that comes in when you find a camp.

That is all (for now).

Welcome, Simplen00b! Thank you for enjoying the Diaries, and let me assure you - if you can raise your shield and thrust attack, you've technically got all the skills you need. Anything else is gravy. I say this from experience, because it's pretty much all I did and I finished. : )

I was playing some PC Dark Souls recently and was amazed at the seemingly large number of new players.  Very cool.

The cheaters are still there of course though.  Not cool.  There is one cheat in which an invader can one-hit kill you and inflict both curse and infection.  It happened to me.  There are some relatively easy ways to remove both even if you're just starting out, but unfortunately those less familiar with the game will be in a very bad way.  That's the infuriating part.  I hate the thought of someone running into one of these losers and then ditching the game in frustration.
