Yo yo yo, dawg, Realtime Worlds’ banger MMO APB be in the hizzle with the nizzle, foshizzle, be gettin ON with its phat beta. Some folk been K-in fo this, fo sho. Ain no dis, no hatin. Roll on wit some funky-fresh APB bling. Pimp out yo gangsta or yo po-po (if dat be how you roll, dawg) and get yo bad self OFF THE HINGES wit da Keys to da City, yo. I ain’t poofin.
Bounce the jump to kick it through, yo.
APB has been in closed beta for a while now (yo), but with the Keys to the City announcement, the availability has opened up quite a bit. As of this writing there are still plenty of slots available to test out this shooter-centric MMO from the geniuses who gave us Crackdown.
I am not really a massively multiplayer sort of guy, though APB’s slick art style, Crackdown heritage, and grindless, action-oriented approach have all intrigued me. Thus did I toddle over to the site and acquire myself a launch key.
I did that yesterday morning. And since then, literally for the past TWENTY EIGHT HOURS AND FORTY-SIX MINUTES (there’s a counter), APB has been downloading the Keys to the City build to my computer. According to the downloader, I should be able to actually run the game in 617 more minutes.
Thus to say that APB’s content servers are a bit bogged down is a slight understatement. And while I understand that opening up the beta to a highly anticipated MMO does tend to drag one’s bandwidth into the nether regions, it doesn’t give me much confidence for performance of the actual game during its launch window. The 7.32 gigabyte download will, assuming my connection remains stead at the 70-odd K it’s been managing so far, take me nearly forty hours to complete.
There’s also talk of incompatibility between North American and European beta builds and keys, so if you want to try APB make sure you choose your region carefully. Finally, our friends in the Land of Australia are completely hosed: APB will not be released there due to it wouldn’t make it past the censors some oddball press smokescreen about servers and there not being many of them in Australia or whatever. Sorry Jarrod.
Stay tuned for impressions, which I will share once the download is complete in February of the year 5,235,626,723,463,778,452,330,708,943,747,297.

Got a beta key myself 🙂 Maybe you wanna hook up wid dis brotha in game, like?
“…wid dis brotha in game, like?”
Like? Hahah, that’s British gangsta for you.
“Thus did I toddle…”
That first paragraph didn’t half make this phrase sound funny. APB be in the hizzle with the nizzle, foshizzle. Thus did I toddle.
I know! I amaze myself sometimes!
I’m down to 141 minutes because shit done speeded up, yo. Lewis, if the NA and UK servers are the same, we’ll form a posse. The city will tremble before us! I’m much better at shooters than I am at chess or Frozen Synapse.
I’m so glad I wasn’t drinking anything when I read your opening paragraph, Steerpike! How many SnoopDogg videos did you have to watch to captcha the flava? 😀
Didn’t know brother Steerpike could drop shit like a pro-defecater, knowhutimsayin. Other than that, my friend managed to download the whole thing and so far he’s kinda uninpmpressed with the shooting, says it’s all about who spots who first…
NA and UK servers are separate. And there are different servers within each “World,” too… And then instancing. I dunno, I kind of skimmed it and it seems like there are lots of ways to not be on the same server as people you know.
[…] though and with development being handled by Ruffian (with Realtime Worlds focusing instead on APB), Crackdown 2 has some yard stick to match if it is to quench the thirst of an expectant fanbase. […]
