When your original mod has been downloaded more than 5 million times, what’s left to do? Go bigger and bolder, according to Element Studios.
Element TD pretty much redefined the tower defense genre. Having launched as a Warcraft III mod, it went on to achieve huge success across StarCraft II and Dota 2. With millions of downloads across each title, Element Studios created a successful mobile variant (which looks lovely), and have since launched into Early Access for the standalone sequel. Appropriately titled Element TD 2, the game aims to build on its predecessors to once again show the competition who’s boss.
In their latest press release, the game’s Early Access is in full swing, with a steady stream of improvements due until it launches later this year. With an entry $9.99, it’s incredibly cheap, and already offers tons of features including a fantastic co-op mode.
A ranked ladder is around the corner, alongside a new Campaign mode, visual refinements, balance tweaks and new maps, it’s shaping up very nicely indeed. Here’s the Early Access trailer, as well as the official run-down: definitely one to watch.
“As a mod, Element TD has evolved through many iterations since 2005, but it was always restricted by the game that it was attached to.” says CEO, Evan Hatampour. “With Element TD 2, we’ve rebuilt it from the ground up as a standalone title, allowing us to expand it in ways that were never possible before. New Maps, modes, co-op, achievements, cosmetics, lobby systems, and even a campaign.”

Lewis! Long time no see!
This looks like a cool game, and at $9.99 it’s hard to say no. I love a good tower defense game and their pedigree is second to none.
Are they using Unity for this? I assume monetizing a standalone game using Source or Blizzard’s tech would be troublesome.
Too long 🙂
It’s really great, and I’ve already sunk a lot of time into it, and for $10 it’s an absolute bargain. Yes, it uses Unity – seems the in thing at the moment!
