1UP gives us a little more news on The Last Guardian, the third game from Team Ico, along with the 2010 TGS preview and some somewhat odd remarks by Fumito Ueda. Actually only one of his remarks was odd.
First of all, the video:
Second, the odd remark –
Early in development, the main character in The Last Guardian was female, but the team ended up going with a boy. The reason: they thought it would be more realistic that he would have enough grip strength to be able to climb around, and because they wouldn’t have to worry about camera angles with a girl who wears a skirt.
I’m not a girl but I don’t really know if that’s true about the grip strength thing. If this girl practiced with those squeezy hand gripper thingies and maybe went to a climbing gym, she’d probably climb better than me, a boy. I climb terribly, I worry too much about falling.
Of course poor Ueda is getting a lot more shit for this remark than it really warrants. His female characters tend to be sylphic and delicate, and while that doesn’t necessarily preclude them from being good climbers, I’m not sure he was saying that girls are weaklings. As for the skirt, well, girls can wear pants, but given what the little boy is wearing, maybe they don’t have pants in that world, just Greek robes. Not wanting to deal with upskirt camera angles is something I can understand, since Google is filled with them in various games. Why not just make it easy on yourself?
Ueda also confirmed the upcoming Ico/Shadow of the Colossus HD remake and gave some general remarks about technology and how his stories won’t always be sad.
That kitty bat thing is totally gonna die.

This could be what persuades me to a PS3. Maybe.
sqeeeeeeeeee!
This is a day one purchase for me – both Last Guardian and the ICO/SotC HD remake.
I want my own kitten-bat.
Hahahah, it’s a cateagle, not kittybat, if Sony are to be believed. But, more to the point, I don’t really understand the upskirt part. Surely, the girl COULD wear underwear, since the boy is clearly wearing tights in the video, under his… skirt. But in the event none of them could wear underwear for some reason, why would seeing girl’s private parts be worse for the game than seeing a dangling dong and its escort??
“That kitty bat thing is totally gonna die.”
Not if I save it. And I will save it. I would die a thousand fiery deaths to save that creature.
I hope The Last Guardian comes bundled with a box of tissues, just in case.
I hope Sony makes plush toys based on that thing. My cats would love it!!!!!!!!!!
That creature looks more dog like to me.. Am I do only one that doesn’t see a cat?
Second, I’d like to see most of the grown men who will play this game climb up walls and “grip” onto things. I can tell you right now, I wouldn’t last more then a minute or two.
Also, echoing Meho’s comments, why is a boy in a skirt ok, but not a girl in a skirt.
Intent aside, his remarks seem pretty sexist to me.
Make the girl wear trousers like the boy, and hey presto. The audience won’t know how many hand clenches she’s done with springy things on her day off.
If I was Bill Gates I’d pay some mad scientist to splice together this creature! It’s so cute!
Definitely a dog. With eagle legs. A deagle. You heard it here first.
Team Ico are right though, girls can’t grip for shit and they never dress appropriately. I mean, look at Lara Croft uh, no wait–
Wow that kitty bat dog eagle thing is vaguely creepy. It’s like they put four parts of cute together and they canceled each other out.
I see a weird mixture of animals, but I do get a cat/dog vibe the most.
Wow, odd statement.
Anyway, this is my most anticipated game of this console generation.
They should have just used the CatDog character from that childrens cartoon from a few years back.
(I wish I could insert a pic here : )
