For some reason this made me think of the flying monkeys in the Wizard of Oz.

I've turned the difficulty up to Master cause I'm so god-like. Which mostly makes my destruction magic utterly useless and turns my one-handed damage from one hit kills to two hit kills. I've tried 2 different destruction magic mods and neither works. I don't even use it any more. Conjuring a dremona or casting an illusion spell is 10 times more effective. What a rip. [Image Can Not Be Found]

I returned to this game a couple of days ago as the cruel penguin lured me into buying the new Deus Ex game and bumped my log back to 0 so I need to finish the Skyrim main quest now. After three weeks of Witcher 2 on Normal, playing Skyrim, even on Master, seemed less than entertaining so I broke down and added a mod.

It's called Deadly Dragons and buffs up the dragons to where they can one hit kill you now if you have no elemental resistance. It allows you to set the dragon difficulty and I set it to Hard. So I'm playing on Master, with Hard Deadly Dragons and I go strolling out of the Nightshade Inn having completed the The Gourmet quest for the Dark Brotherhood when the sky lights up and I go flying through the air like a rag doll, dead as a doornail.  I reload, run inside the Inn and put on all my resistance gear and head back out.

It's an Aspect of Alduin dragon, at something like level 65. I'm at level 56. It has this shout of its own that rains down ice. It can resist my dragonrend shout on occasion. It appears to breath both fire and ice. But wait, there is more. It can also it summon a Skeletal Dragon for 30 secs or so just to mix things up a little more. I have Moll as my companion but she is mostly lying face down in the snow getting pounded. Luckily she is unkillable but other than drawing a bit of aggro while I cower on the porch, she is not helping much. It took about 35 potions and 15 minutes to kill this thing, mostly cause I decided to go toe to toe with it using my sword and shield. Every once in a while it summons another dragon and I'm running around and around the inn in the middle of the night, unable to even find the damn thing. Finally I got its health down far enough to permanently ground it, luckily between a rock and a tree and was able to pound it death between healing up every 15 seconds.

The mod gives you a lot more loot off the dragon, including a token you can turn in in Whiterun for special dragon fighting armor. Apparently this Aspect of Alduin bastard is one of the two nastiest dragons this mod serves up. I was hoping for a starter dragon but no...I get Godzilla.

Anyway, it was really fun and I highly recommend this mod if you want to spice this game up a bit. I definitely keep one eye on the sky at this point.

Once I finish up my Dark Brotherhood quest line, I'm off to complete the main quest. First I have to return to the University and brew up like 50 healing potions.

That sounds like a good one, Scout. I'm adding it now. Hopefully this doesn't mean I have to put Skyrim back in my negative column for the Log.

Done!

Wrapped up the Main Quest yesterday though not without one final bug. A dragon that was supposed to be my ally, kept attacking me. The epilogue, which was supposed to be me talking to the powers that be all palsy-walsy ended up being me running from an immortal dragon for about 10 minutes. Finally it switched back to an ally so whatever the bug was got overridden. I think I accidentally boinked the dragon earlier and caused it to aggro. Anyway, order is restored in Skyrim.

I need to check out the Dark Brotherhood's new digs as I completed all their quests but never returned. I am head of the Companions, the Mages, the Thieves and the Dark Brotherhood. Next I think I will start a band and get a twitter account...

Finally, my last AMD video card driver download broke the in-game AA so I had to turn that off at the end just to play.

I finished at level 56, just a hair from getting to level 57.

Once the Witcher 2 Enhanced Edition releases in mid-April I want to play the second path from the beginning. For now I have Deus Ex 3 and Mass Effect 2 (which is not really exciting me) to fuss around with.

I am still playing and enjoying Skyrim.   I am I think at Level 26 of so.   I am the head of the Mages and the Companions and have been working on a couple of Daedra quests though for many of them I need to get to a higher level.    Am starting Thieve's quest and plan to look in on the Dark Brotherhood soon.  I found the Dark Brotherhood deliciously creepy in Oblivion.  I currently can turn into a werewolf which is a first for me in games.   Haven't tried any mods yet but it looks like getting mods through Stream may make the process a lot easier.

Kay, the Steam Workshop is amazing. You can subscribe to mods and they'll automatically update for you - very simple. The only real drawback I see is that it already has hundreds of mods, and though they're user-rated, it can be hard to tell what's worth your time and what might break your game.

I drifted from Skyrim but as soon as I finish Mass Effect 3 I'm going to be heading back. I think I'll start all over, this time as a straight mage - I've been intrigued by that approach ever since Jarrod described his character. Never done it in an Elder Scrolls game. It's time to try!

I have decided that it is time for me to finish this game.   I have become "head of this and head of that".   Mostly now my new quests make me think,  "This again.  Been there. Done that."

So I am returning to the main quest to save the world or whatever it is I have to do.  I feel a dit sorry to wind this down since I have really enjoyed this game.

But there are many games out there that are calling to me.   So time to move on.

I haven't finished Skyrim.   I find it such an in interesting placed to  be that I will keep exploring and maybe move on with the main quest every once in a while.   I will try and play a few other games.   But I like the feeling that I can still come back to Skyrim.

I've picked up recently where I left off - that is, confused - and have resolved to at least attempt partaking in more interesting quest lines and avoiding the dull stuff that adds nothing.

Finally I visited the Dark Brotherhood and have ventured head first down that path. Since abandoning my archer/thief (not by choice, if you recall from my ramblings earlier in this thread, but due to loss of PS3 save file) who was somewhat of a karma-conscious character I've taken to a more selfish, sinister path, so the Dark Brotherhood has suited me well. It's at least more intriguing than the Thieves Guild whose work I found a bit underwhelming, if simply unsuited for Skyrim's stealth-dumb engine.

Once I exhaust the Dark Brotherhood story line I believe I may carry on with the main path, since I seem to be a bit over-leveled now: 120 hours or so on this character, level 37, and with level 2 Marked for Death I can take out an Elder Dragon in 4-5 swings of my mace.

I'm tired of having a carry limit. The thing's pretty damn arbitrary in the first place. 400 weight units or infinite, what the hell's the difference? Dark Souls had the right idea in abandoning Demon's Souls carry limit. I'm a fantasy world veteran, I really don't mind suspending a tiny bit more disbelief for what honestly amounts to a significant chunk of convenience. I would guess that I've spent anywhere between 10-20 hours purely devoted to my carry limit, whether it was trading heavy items for their maximum value, playing ridiculous games of choose-which-barrel-in-my-house-to-store-this-type-of-crap-in, concocting fortify carry weight potions, at the same time guessing how many of other types of potions I'll need for a given trek so that I can offload what I don't need, each potion being a significant 0.5 weight units.

It's a terrible meta game in and of itself!

Let's just say for example that I was writing reviews for a site like IGN, with a 10 point scale; the sheer volume of banal chores alone would detract an entire point off my score.

There are a ton of repetitves quest in Skyrim -- go there, get that, do that, come back.

I have found that most of the quests leading up to being the head of a faction  are  interesting and then all the additional quests are boring -- the same thing again and again.

Every once in a while I stumble on by chance (as I wander about) a  facinating quest and enjoy working on it.    But I am  once again thinking (level 41) about finishing the main quest or picking a side in the war  -- I don't think these are mutually exclusive.

I can still come back when I finish and wander about.   I still have Dawnstar to work on and the mod Moonpath to Elseware.

I agree   about how annoying the carrying weight limits are.   But that is one of the ways they make these games longer.

Anyway.   Let us hear about what you do next.   Kay

Banality becomes a natural problem with games that struggle to be huge - and of course Bethesda's games are famous for doing just that. While a few years ago I would've been hard on a game, especially an RPG, that was "short," these days I find myself enjoying ever more compact experiences. While part of the reason for that is lack of time (so I can more readily finish shorter games), I also dislike size for its own sake. It's possible to do epic in a relatively contained area.

Skyrim is one of those games I plan to revisit and start over, trying something new. For some reason my Steam copy is frozen on an "update paused" message and won't resume even when I tell it to; maybe I'll clean it off, reinstall it, and add some of the most popular mods from the Workshop. You guys will have to recommend some for me.

Xtal, are you still playing on the PS3? Did they finally fix the save problem?

What are some shorter RPGs that you have liked.   RPGs have become my favorite type of game and I am always looking for recommendations.  Kay

They're probably all ones you know, Kay. I really liked Alpha Protocol (despite terrible bugs); that weighed in at around... oh, 40 hours I guess. I suppose "short" is comparative when we're talking RPGs... I can't think of any that were, like, 15 hours. KOTOR and Vampire Bloodlines are unforgettable, but I'm sure you've played those; if you have a PS3, the Persona games are brilliant, but actually pretty long.

If I could humbly butt into the recommendations, I'd agree that Persona 3 is excellent.  It avoids most of the JRPG attributes that I, well, dislike.  I didn't like Persona 4 as much, but then I haven't finished it.  Definitely not short though.  If you have a PS2, then Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter is one of the most tightly designed games I've ever played, with a very moving story.

I haven't finished KoTOR 2, but I like it better than the first.  More introspective.  I like Arx Fatalis, although I haven't finished it either *sigh*.  But any spiritual successor to Ultima Underworld will always have a firm place in my heart.

The term "short RPG" may be an oxymoron.  I hear Jade Empire is pretty short though.  That's another one in my queue.

Two days after I lost my PS3 save file I went out and bought the Xbox version. Yep, I'm an idiot.

So yeah, I finished the Dark Brotherhood quest line, I really liked it. There were some brilliant moments throughout (assassinating Vittoria Vicci and the madness afterwards being one). What these specialized quest paths do, however, is like Kay said, highlight just how banal some of the regular side quests are.

I have no problem with the size of Skyrim; not finishing any previous Elder Scrolls game, I don't know how the size of the territory (without looking at a map of Tamriel) stacks up to Cyrodil or Morrowind, but it's plenty large for explorer types. That's great, because there are constantly very lovely places to discover - I just reached the Lover Stone for the first time a few days ago ... it gives you a brilliant view point.

The down side is how Bethesda feels the need to fill so much space with boring dungeons and many dull fetch quests. I really can't stress the word boring enough, either. Anyone who has played at least 60 hours of the game knows what I mean: there's the odd unique or brief dungeon, but most of them are just these endless mazes of draugr after draugr, and the whole time I'm thinking to myself what am I doing this dungeon crawl for? ... and it just leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

I would be ready to applaud Bethesda if they made this large world but left a lot of it empty. Not literally; yes, trees, rivers, rocks, bears, whatever, those are all pretty. But it's the dungeons hidden away everywhere, and that for some sick reason I feel compelled to go spelunking.

I have one major city left to visit - Winterhold. Didn't visit in my 120 hours on my first (PS3) character either, so after all this time there is more discovering to do. I don't know how long I'll keep putting off the bigger stuff. I don't think it will be much more though, because I need to feel interested in something in Skyrim again.

I have not played Alpha Protocol,  KOTAR, or Vampire Bloodlines so that are three I can add to my list.  I am not looking specifically for short  RPGs just good ones.   Thanks.   Kay

Those are all older ones, and all but one from Obsidian Entertainment - known for brilliant writing... and bugs that were never fixed.

Alpha Protocol: fascinating spy RPG with many action elements.

KOTOR (translation = Star Wars - Knights of the Old Republic): the only thing you ever need to know about Star Wars; it's from BioWare (of Mass Effect/Baldur's Gate/Dragon Age fame); the sequel KOTOR2 - from Obsidian - is famous for, er, brilliant writing and bugs.

Vampire Bloodlines: mostly RPG, part... I guess shooter, but that's unfair; brilliant writing, and, um, bugs.

You will love them all. Most, if not all, are available on Steam. I would pummel a puppy to hear your thoughts on any of them.
