Thought I would open a thread for Skyrim in this forum. If you are new to the Bollocks forum, here be spoilers galore.

I just exited the tutorial area, loaded down with armor and weapons and already near to my weight limit. I got my first quest, to Riverrun (I think it's called...I don't have the game open at the moment.) The graphics are a little edgy and the interface is going to take some getting used to but that seems to be SOP for Elder Scrolls games anymore. The hardest part was getting Steam to behave as I haven't been there in three months (I know...) and it didn't even recognize me at first. I finally had to manually repair the client to get it wake up. All is good now.

I'm no fan of mods but even I can see plenty of places where a firmer hand is needed. So far, the river I saw outside of the first cave is sort of floating on the ground, not flowing along. Also, as has been pointed out on the blog, combat is sort of wimpy, esp. the lack of tactile feedback when using a sword or an axe.

I picked my usual race, the Dark Elves, and my usual guild, Warrior. I feel the need for a little bit of familiarity here at the start of the game.

I'm glad that you started this thread. I probably won't be picking this up for a while since I have several other games to play. I wonder if I will be able to run it on my four year old computer. I do have a 8800 GT card. I guess I will be looking to an upgrade first.

I'm still trying to decide if I want to play this or not. I couldn't get into Oblivion at all. Plus the fact I'm still working my way through DX:HR it will be a while before I play anything else. And the new Zelda releases next week... there's simply too many games and not enough time!

Mayhap I'll pick this up once it's on sale… then it won't matter if I don't like it. [Image Can Not Be Found]

I'm in. Cheapie me waited out free shipping for my pre-order from Amazon.  Arrived today. Plus the 650 friggin' pg strategy guide. Including a HUGE map. [Image Can Not Be Found]

While impatiently following my tracking number, I continued in Dead Island and took zombie breaks in To the Moon. Loved, loved, loved (to include both anticipatory and consequential sobbing)To the Moon. Especially the last hour and most especially the ending. If you can get past the graphics and sometimes wince-worthy dialog (due to corny-ness), I cannot recommend the game more highly. $11.99 from the devs @ Freebird Games. I'll be buying the sound track too.

Oh & [Edit]? Of course I'll be tweaking!

FOV 85 will be among the first.

Yah! Yapette. [Image Can Not Be Found] I am thinking of buying that guide. This game looks to be enormous.

Hey Pokey and Toger.

I've already done some .ini tweaking. Switched off the mouse acceleration, widened the FOV to 90 and enabled tree and rock self-shadowing. This game is heating up my video card a bit. For once I'm looking forward to some mods. [Image Can Not Be Found]

I ran into my first bandits just above Riverwood. Had to lug the loot back down to town and sell it. Then i'ts back up the hill to some barrow full of bandits. I'm slowly getting the hang of things. I want my ebony armor and my fireball back. I think I know what I'm going to be doing tonight. This game is perfect timing for me. I have the next few days free so I want to get as deep into Skyrim as I can before my pea brain forgets what it is doing.

Nice one Scout.  I didn't spend much time in Riverwood (except for helping a shopkeeper get back something that was stolen), but went to the next place north and told them about the dragon attack.  I found out about a colleague of magic, so I went up to study with them, way up north (in Winterhold or Whiterun, I'm still getting those two confused).  There appears to no longer be any Mages Guild.

Also, there appears to be no spell crafting (which is a HUGE disappointment), and enchanting has been reworked into a horrible, horrible parody of itself - becoming something that more resembles WoW than an Elder Scrolls game.  unfortunately I have to lower my opinion of the game as a result.  The new levelling takes a little to get used to, too.

I've done three or four of the colleague's quests, killed two dragons, recovered Azura's Star (one of the barkeeps mentions it, and you can follow it up - definitely one of the most useful artefacts in the ES series, although with enchanting the way it is, I'm not sure how great it will be here).

I'm currently a level 11, high elf, mage - with around 10 or so hours under my belt.  Oh, and I'm playing on the PS3, so no mods for me.

So you're going pretty straight mage, Jarrod? I've never played an Elder Scrolls game like that and always been curious if being a spellcaster first and foremost could work. So far Skyrim definitely seems friendly to the idea - I've been using much more Destruction magic than I did in the older games.

Also: agreed, the spellmaker's absence and the item-enchanting system are both heartbreaking removals. Why is it, in all its reinvention, Bethesda never LEAVES IN the good stuff? There were many aspects of Morrowind that needed no changing at all, and those were two.

I'm level 14-ish, playing a fightery-thiefy-magey fellow. Killed three dragons; a Jarl gave me a female named Lydia; I'm meandering toward the main quest. Joined the Mage College in... White... Hold... Winter... Run... Snow... Helm... I can't even remember. The city I'm in right now is where Mr. The Stormcloak lives, and as I said to Armand in a moment of wit, it's so gloomy it's like Edgar Allen Poe was their urban planner.

My next objective is to find the Horn Of Ulenghirdsdoghtersonfrenjensondoghter. Or maybe it's "Hrothgar."

Yup, straight mage at this stage, although I do sneak a fair bit.  Dual-wielding the streams of destruction magic is working a treat so far, and a bit further up the destruction chain, dual-wielded spells will also stumble targets, which I'm really looking forward to.

I have a Lydia too, although I don't know what to do with her just yet.  When I buy a house, I might see if she'll hang around it.  I'm always wary, in Bethesda games, to take allies with me.  I'm too worried I'll get them killed, and would rather see them somewhere safe.

What I'd like to do is enchant all of my equipment with Health Regen, in the hopes that I'll be able to heal faster than enemies can inflict damage (a trick I learnt in Morrowind).  Otherwise, I'd like to place Ward or Shield enchantments all over my clothes, but I don't know if you can do that.  I heard that if you place Fortify <magic school> 25% on 4 items, then spells of that school don't use Magicka at all... but I haven't "discovered" the right enchantments to do any of that yet.  Oh, and I want to place a paralyze enchantment on a dagger, if I can find that enchantment too (not that I really use weapons).  Stitches up spellcasters real good.

Anyway, enchantment dreams aside, I'm pretty happy to help the Mages out, and level up as I do so.  I wonder if we'll be given the chance to become the Arch-Mage...?  Liking the whole Viking feel of the villages and locations.

I think I'll have to re-watch The 13th Warrior when I get home...

I'm level .5  [Image Can Not Be Found]

Started without reading the manual and these controls are *not* intuitive (to my way of thinking). Keeping fireball & a weapon equipped simultaneously is giving me fits! Forget about un-equipping to try out a bow. No way, no sir, that bear can jolly well stay asleep.

I'm hoping to go fireball & some-kinda-weapon plus something-body to draw aggro...which may mean a huminoid, even better if my sidekick can shoot a bow (since I won't be).

Based on my history of do-overs in Elder Scrolls games (Morrowind, my first rpg, required 5), my Breton (human female faces are yuck, we neeeed Ren's Beauty Pack) may not be my final.

Off to read about hotkeys (oh sorry, Favorites [Image Can Not Be Found]) and selecting spells (P...P? [Image Can Not Be Found]) and where in hell do I see what I'm wearing (if such a screen exists [Image Can Not Be Found]).

Mind you, I'm not complaining.....rather, I'm adjusting. [Image Can Not Be Found]

Yapette, I  have an archer sidekick I picked up almost immediately in Riverwood, the starter village. Just do a little quest involving two guys and a girl with an eye toward said sidekick.

Jarrod, you are so compassionate. I go through companions like a hot knife through butter. As I see it, their job is to take a bullet for me. Or an arrow. Or a big old spider bite. (Yes Toger, big, nasty spider caves again….) [Image Can Not Be Found]

I haven't even tried to dual wield diddly yet. In Elder Scroll games I sort of just hit a thing with an axe or a sword until it falls over dead. I did take down an elk with a bow at level 1. Last night I had to stop early. I was getting killed by a giant spider in the barrow cave above Riverwood anyway so I think it's time to look into my spellcasting. I want to build another Battlemage anyway.

That is sad news about the lack of weapons and armor enchanting. I got into that big time in Morrowind as well. I was pretty much enchanting my chewing gum in that game. And yeah the controls are odd, esp. the mouse buttons. I still keep clicking left mouse button to swing my sword only to unequip it instead. Also the lack of any tactile feedback with a hand weapon is annoying. Didn't they have that in Oblivion? I seem to remember it.

I'm at level 3.

I liked the idea of enchanting in Oblivion. The practice, I found, was that I quickly maxed out the amount of mana (or whatever it was called) available from the soul gems without really having made anything unique or powerful. The grand soul gems were no better and I was forced into the black gems, which were really a pita to come up with. All in all I never made anything that compared with the weapons I made with the stones recovered from the Oblivion gates, or special quest items I'd found. Perhaps I was doing it wrong and perhaps this was a mod-able improvement, but it's a huge bit of complexity that I'll bet they are glad to be done with.

Are the spell effects any better than Oblivion? Those were miserable.

Weren't the Varla stones pretty good? I can't remember. I used a lot of gems from the Oblivion Gates too, though mostly to close more gates as I was on a tear in the red land for about two months. I don't think I bothered much with soul gems in Oblivion.

Yeah, I've seen them. I watched a Youtube video of the first areas and got a bad case of the squeamys when a bunch of those nasty, evil things dropped from the cave ceiling.

Toger, if you like, there's a mod that turns the spiders into bears (unless you're playing on your 360, in which case you're hosed). Jarrod has no fear of spiders because he lives in Australia and they grow to the size of housecats there, and Scout is just mean and likes to torture we arachnophobes. But I stand with you in horror.

Just recovered from a hard drive incident and looking forward to getting back into the game. I'm leaning toward doing some main quest stuff for a while, then I might just walk west for an hour to see where I get.

Modding out the spiders could be worth the pain of sitting in a hard chair vs my comfy red chair on 360.

Of course I still don't have the time since my pre-ordered Zelda will be here next week.

I hate spiders too and one day I was up on a step-ladder reaching in and around our outdoor light fixture to change a bulb and I stuck my fingers into this spot behind the light and this thing squirmed under my fingers and my spouse said she heard my shriek from inside our straw bale house but it turned out not to be a spider at all but a lurking spotted mountain dropping attack toad.. how in God's name it got to be 9' above the ground I'll never know but I still can't walk out the door without cringing and thinking how one could drop down my exposed neck AT ANY TIME. You just never know when your time will come.

Oh man. Spideys are cool. I like them. [Image Can Not Be Found] They were all over my garden this fall, gobbling up flies. The sticky webs were a bit of a nuisance though. I do knock them out of the way when I need to get by. Then I just flick them off me. I am holding my breath waiting for Gregg to post some pics of the big Australian ones. [Image Can Not Be Found]

Remind me to tell you about the time I found a tarantula lurking in my shower one morning when I lived in Phoenix.

This barrow cave is endless. I've spent an hour in it fighting some kind of undead zombie thingie. My archer companion is nearly dead so I had him stay behind while I went on without him. He was crawling behind me. I'm hoping I can fast travel at the barrow door and get him back to his village and eventually heal him for his trouble. He took a lot of aggro when he was healthy.

Just yesterday I was watching one small spider dangle his way down from the lights overhangning the bed.  It was kinda like he was flying.  He was small, so I let him go about his business.

I started enchanting some iron daggers to help get my enchanting up.  They sell ok, but not enough to reimburse the cost of the materials yet.  Oh, and I was making the iron daggers that I was enchanting too, thus getting my smithing up at the same time.  This part of the game is very similar to what you do in WoW.

Somewhere along the way I accidentally sold my kick-ass robes, so now I'm reduced to some stupid leather armour.  So I enchanted that too, to help quicken my Magicka regen.

I blew all of my money trying to get my Conjuring up (and on enchanting/smithing supplies), so now I am very poor again.  Fortunately, I've just stuck my head into my first Dwemer (dwarf?) ruins, which look wealthy enough to recoup my losses.  Here's hoping.  Oh, and the ruins themselves look wonderful, I love what they've done with them.

Also, I've slain two more dragons - ony by myself (well, with a Flame Atronarch) at the College, and the other I lured into a Giant and his Mammoths.  I've run past a few giants, and they don't seem to be antagonist towards me yet... but maybe I just haven't been close enough to piss them off.  I have heard that they are monstrously fearsome foes, far stronger than dragons.

Unfortunately, I have a fair bit of reno's to do over the weekend, so I'm not sure how much Skyrim I'll be able to squeeze in.  Level 15 atm.

Scout: you are a Terrible Person. We weren't even testing for that. But it says so right here. "Terrible person." I don't like toads either. In fact, I hate all of nature, and you seem to revel in it. Why? The whole Terrible Person thing.

Jarrod: again, I forgive you because you're Australian and as far as I can tell, only prehistoric terrifying things (and normal people) live there. I hope Gregg is not eaten by one (crocodiles? Seriously? The rest of that shit you have isn't enough?) during his visit. Apparently my country is sending a bunch of Marines to yours, probably against the spiders. I'll look the other way on this most recent spider story you shared, but if you make it a habit you'll hear my childish screams from all the way across the globe.

In better news, I spent a good few hours playing this evening, and I can say that mage robes should be comparatively easy to replace. Sorry you sold yours! Due-ish west from Whiterun you'll find a two-person cabal that may have what interests you.

Hi guys, long time no see! 😉

Super excited about this game, so I thought I'd stop by and chat about it a bit.

So far, I'm on my third character (yup). Played the first time with a dark elf spell sword like character. Flames in one hand, sword in another. Mostly did the main quest line there.

Second character was a cat thief/archer, with whom I did the thieves guild stuff.

Now I'm on a Nord shield/axe type doing the warrior guild stuff, and may do the Stormcloak content as well (hey, I'm playing a nord).

Hope to try a full on mage next! I am way too into this game.

Runs great! Only a couple crashes in the 60+ hours I've already played (took a few days off work, I'm a nerd...) Playing on PC, so feel free to say hi on Steam and look at my many screen shots.

I like enchanting a lot more in this game. Feels much more streamlined and easy to handle. I hated everything about it in Oblivion, don't remember it from Morrowind.

Helmut: Spell effects are a million times better in this game. The magic system is possibly one of the biggest improvements. I know they took out spell creation, which is kind of a bummer, but I also like that it's all just kind of easier and less cumbersome. I like being able to just buy my spell, learn it, then fire away. By reducing the numbers/complexity of magic, they've made it much more accessible, and I'm (first time ever) ready to try a dedicated mage in a TES game.

Questions: Scout - How did you get an archer sidekick? I did that same quest you did two different ways, but no one came along with me.
