Pokey, I'm playin'.

Can't believe how much this game mirrors the Gothics which I so recently played (as in experienced, not finished).

From the get-go, you must understand that you are much, much better than I am at combat & survival.  I play MMOs without assistance, TES games modded, but the Gothics are beyond my patience to pursue wihout enchancement.  Meaning so far, early on, I'm playing pure as the driven snow. Soon, very soon, I may resort to less than honorable means to keep Mr. Noname alive more often than dead.

Just so you know....[Image Can Not Be Found]

Yapette, good to hear you're playing it. I just started last night and am having a fairly easy time so far. Where are you? You can avoid that wolf on the way from the shore and I heard that there is a shield on that path, so I'm going back to look for it. It should make fighting the animals much easier. You are playing on easy, aren't you? I did avoid the crypt but am going back to check it out today.

I had a crash the first time I started it up and have had a few “put the original DVD in the drive” errors. Going to try newer drivers and see if that helps. Think I'll go with Geforce 181.20 since I heard they work well with the game. Hope that solves my problems.

Do you have any quests listed in your journal? Mine is blank.

I'm going to check out the swamp and the Don before the town. [Image Can Not Be Found]

Playing on Easy? Is the Pope Catholic? [Image Can Not Be Found]

I did the crypt in the demo so I knew what to expect....easy enough to redo in the real game. I was afraid I'd join the bandits by mistake so I took the road to Harbour Town. Stuck there till I find the secret way out as I refuse (can't afford to) bribe the guard more than once. When I can, I'll drop in the Swamp...and save often, in case I make a conversational mistake. Still don't know which way to go....the Mages sound very nice, I am not a thug at heart, but may have to join the Inquisition due to my suckitude at magic & mana survival

Knowing alchemy fiddling will drive me nuts, I spent 5 pts. in alchemy cause I want those perma-stat boosts. Alas, no one has yet listed the ingredients we need to save for those (reason I have no money, afraid to sell anything).

Got "put the original DVD..." the first, and only, time I used the desktop shortcut. Now I let the DVD power up & use "Play" in the main menu. I'm going to try some of the tweaks I've found online - draw distance, depth of field, etc. Since I'm ATI and you're nVidia, our graphical experiences may be very different.

My log does list quests. Haven't noticed red dots on any maps but last night I mostly talkity-talked getting many quests without bothering to think about who/where/how I'd do them. For that, I was counting on y[Image Can Not Be Found]u.  Except you'll be questing in the Swamp. [Image Can Not Be Found]

Found the shield, thank the gods - it helps muchly when I manage to block in a timely manner. [Image Can Not Be Found] I check out any patch of grass & bushes beside the path except if I spot multi boars or wolves or prickly-backs. Knowing much, most, many? of the enemies won't respawn I have no problem letting them live till I get stronger. BTW, knockouts instead of death works the same with humans as in the Gothics.

Do y'all think this game would be fun for someone who's never played a Gothic?

Jen, I think you would like it. The controls are easier than they were in the Gothic games and I'm finding it easier to play--haven't died yet. You will start out very weak and even have to find a stick for defense, but you soon find better weapons and even some armor later. It has an interesting story and lots of exploring.

Jen, reason I wrote what I did (Risen = Gothics) is the games seem to be clones with different content. [Image Can Not Be Found]

What I mean is gathering plants, spending LPs (learning pts), three factions one of which you must join, trainers, lots of time spent questing in Single City, single sets of armor (low, med & high)… stuff like that.

Mind you, I watched Gothic I on YouTube, played Gothic II through endless quests in Chap. 2 (covering RL  weeks, by then I'd had enough), and merely started Gothic III. Gothic I & II had no mouse (arrowing gets old, FAST) and Gothic III had limited mouse, like click instead of ENTER on main menu (still had to arrow up/down).

In my opinion, Risen is a mouse driven Gothic with graphics not that much better. If you haven't played any Gothics, here's a way to experience the series without having to play Mr.  Mittenman (early 3D).  (Risen's guy is Mr. Stubblehead).  Try the demo, it's still slightly clunky but accurate – it's how the game plays.

The new drivers seem to help. I now have quests in my log and even dots on the map. Still looking for a shield but I did come across a cave near the shore that I didn't see before. It has some chests with goodies and a bunch of gnomes. I still have to get to the swamp and I may decide to head to town instead. I heard of a secret way out of town.

No missing DVD error, but I did have a crash on startup again. Something about no access. Sounds a bit like my troubles with other Gothic games.

Go to town*. Then you can be stuck there like me & overwhelmed with quest requests. A major problem is deciding whose to start with so you don't piss off another group that you might want to join (later). Unless blatantly obvious, I don't know who is aligned with what group. [Image Can Not Be Found]

* But first, visit the crypt....and thereabouts.....

I've done quite a few swamp quests, though they get pretty involved and it is hard to figure out where to go next. I'd like to beat up some characters, but I will need armor and the only available item is farmer's clothes at 500 gold.[Image Can Not Be Found]

Not much in the crypt but I did find a shield nearby.

I don't want to see the Don yet. He might recruit me. Life is dreary here. I may head to the city for a while. [Image Can Not Be Found]

Be careful, it's not only seeing the Don that'll commit you. In Harbour City you're automatically aligned once you've completed 4 quests from either the Bandits or Inquisition. (I think that's correct, could be only 3) In order to learn pickpocket I sucked up to the Bandits for whom I'm 2/4.  Tonight, I must be really really careful to curry favor with the other guys.

Wish I'd had a chance to quest (level!) in the Swamp. Tonight I'm going to backup & sort saves with the intention of clearly marking a fork in my current path. Then later, I might reload & take the "road less traveled." Join the Mages or Bandits. Without replaying all the first part again.

You could sneak out of the city and head to the swamp. Of course that will give you more quests with the bandits. I believe I have done more than four quests and haven't been recruited.

Although *I* know one way to open a secret passage, no one in game has told me. And I haven't found a trainer for sneak – tonight I was going to do what I have to do so I can talk with him.

I tried jumping – easy enough to do but I landed too hard to live. Guards had a nice laugh about that. Just a sec, let me load & see if I can brazenly waltz out. Or not.

Harbour quest alignments are clearly designated as such when receiving your reward – after you turn them in. [Image Can Not Be Found]

Later: I made it! Wouldn't have without pickpocketing. My only skill so far besides +5 (or 10, I forget) strength & +5 alchemy for which I haven't yet found a recipe. I'm saving up for lockpick & sneak.

Congrats on your escape.[Image Can Not Be Found]   Are you heading to the swamp? I really don't like this confusion on which group you are aligned with. I want it to be my choice and I think I would like to join the Inquisition. I'm more of a city person though I don't like the idea of being locked in.

So. Much. Fun.

Every night I burn incense to the God of F8 (quicksave).

The Swamp is a hoot after the city. Lvl 4, better than starter sword & shield + pickpocket....life is good & lucrative. Except I just got killed by a Bog Man. Bandits can't sem to kill him either so I finally quit the game while they were still whackin' away in futility.

Still wearing castaway rags. Not sure I want to spend the gold for hunter clothes + afraid they might mark me as a Don's Boy if I wear 'em. There's a not very good jacket for sale in the city...cheaper, perhaps good enough for now. Haven't decided.

Running is good. I was getting killed by the moths and porcupines in the cave, so I ran and led them to the camp, where I got a lot of help. I can kill a worm if I have help, but I am pretty weak still. The bog people kill me in one second. Level 4 with the same sword and shield. The workers clothes are still too expensive. I found a guy that brews beer on the outskirts and he pays well for the weeds I bring him. I ran into a bunch of the Order near there and they tried to kill me. Does that mean I am a bandit now or do they treat everyone that way?

I only know the Order in the city & while they aren't friendly types, they don't harm me. Yet. In fact, Carlos the defacto leader is waiting for me but I'm avoiding him. Again, afraid what he has to say may mark me although I think he's gonna give me permission to join the Mages if I want. Cause I'm such a helpful guy.

From what I've gleaned scouring forums, quests in the Swamp don't count toward alignment. The Don sends you to the city and it's there that Order/Inquisition vs. Bandits quests start ticking.

This afternoon I transit houses taking my saves to another computer, another install. Luckily ATI video. Hope it works.

I am champion fighter of the swamp after defeating four other fighters in the arena. Quests didn't seem to be advancing, so I went to the city. Checked everything out, looted a few chests, found a bow and talked to Scordo. Promised to find 3 gold bowls for him. I needed a key to leave, but my guy said it was too risky to pickpocket, so I jumped off the wall near the front gate and went back to the farm. I have a save in the city and may go back. I am level 5 now.

[Image Can Not Be Found] Which side of the wall did you jump from !?!?!?!?  I jumped next to the rock/mountain & died.

I am too chicken (and combat suckage) to try the arena, probably going to pass on that part. Went in to see the Don, talkity-talkity-talk with the Don & another npcs, tried to grab a recipe near someone named Kormac (or similar) and he got very pissed. Beat me up and took 500g as compensation. That one ain't gonna happen so I'll reload. [Image Can Not Be Found]

Now I'm wondering if *I* talk to the Don, will I become "his man?" Just as you wondered earlier. I'll check forums for clues.

I jumped from the corner of the wall onto the rock face and then down. I lost about half my health.

You should try the arena fights as it will be good practice and you can win money. The first guy was pretty easy except that I forgot to equip my sword. The second was too. A hint flashed up about tapping a key but I was too busy to notice. If you see it, maybe it will mean something to you. I need to find tips on sword fighting. The manual was no help.

I think it may be okay to talk to the Don. Nothing is happening in the swamp quest right now, so I guess I'll try his quest. I figured out that the Order bunch was trying to kidnap me and take me to the monastery.

Were you able to pickpocket with the first level of pickpocket?

I jumped on the rock, slide (slid?) off & died. Lots of times I ran around the city with half empty health bar so that mighta been why I died.

Pickpocketing **** oops, edit! edit, this is wrong, somehow this "1" was left in here, it's meant to be "2"******* 1 is effective, so far the game warns & prevents me when I'm too under-leveled to pick. Got caught only once but it was the blacksmith (edit: not w/ the sword, but the first time looking at his stuff) & he might be a higher class npc. Is this the way it worked in Gothics (I was only lvl 1 there):

1. Pickpocketing is timed with a timer bar.

2. Only one item.

3. Once you “pick” an npc, you can never do it again.

Having a hell of a time reading icons & deciding within time limit. Picked the blacksmith, later reloaded repeatedly cuz I kept hitting Luis while he was fighting the moths that I kitted back to him from the cave. [Image Can Not Be Found] Post-moths, he'd bash on me. Anyway, somehow I reloaded enough so the blacksmith hadn't been picked. Thankfully, I simply pickpocketed the golden sword back (me? fight him when there is an alternative?).  Taught me to be certain I will never need something else before pickpocketing any npc.
