Thought I'd give this a try, then spent the afternoon in the mine and thought I'd give my thought a second thought... Too much time spent in my absolute personal weakness zone: stick-to-it-ivness and persistence, dedication and hard work, commitment and following through. Bon Voyage! Keep going it's entertaining reading.

Noooo Helmut, the mine isn't the game. Remember how much Scout hated it? It's the beginning, granted, but it's a dark rail-yard and the game isn't that. Honest. Some o' the quests and especially the dungeons (which aren't really dungeons but fantastical long – yes, on rails – places) are the best I have ever played. Ever. [Image Can Not Be Found]
(admittedly I've only played rpgs since 2003 or so).

Pokey, I don't quite understand. You did Gilliad crypt? ghost tree? I googled & somone on SureAI's forum reporting same symptoms as you. Plus, the quest had been bugged for some but as I haven't done it yet, haven't read the threads & don't know the bugs. Think a patch addressed some problems players had.
You were the one helping me with the no-birds parts, I'd assumed you'd done it all. Map markers? I don't even remember having map markers for this quest. Or I may be losing my mind & confusing quests. [Image Can Not Be Found]
No, I did the starter crypt where you get map markers and directions. The map markers disappeared after the first artifact, but I guess that is normal. I'm going ahead and see if all works out.
I finished the second crypt SW of Giliad. No message when I picked up the artifact, but two in my inventory, so I think I am back on track. Yap, you are going to love this crypt. Some really nifty jumping. I died a half dozen times before I got the hang of it. It isn't that hard. Another magic letter in the chapel near there.

Helmut, I was waist deep in second thought at the beginning of this game. I would strongly question the wisdom of the modders to open the game the way they did. I imagine it has put off more than one gamer. I'm all for starting slow and gaining momentum but Nehriim starts out comatose in that mine. Once you get out of the mine opening it's like the modders decided they didn't want to make a game that sucks and started doing interesting stuff. If you have any spare persistence laying around in a drawer I'd recommend you give this another try. Once you get out of that mine area the game really takes off.
Looks like you guys are quite a ways along. I've been folllowing all week on my phone. I need to repair my desktop and get the new cd from my mail which is on hold at the post office. I left off at level 18 with Magic IV, somewhere around Erothin pumping up Acrobatics and trying to top off Intelligence. Sounds like a lot of game left in front of me. Will check back in later.
Got the game running again. Apparently I'm in the middle of the Darius Quest too, Pokey. I finally got those damned artifacts to line up...
The key for me was to watch the three spots by the treasure box. When you get the artifact placed correctly, and I use the term "correctly" loosely becausae I basically just pushed them around on their side until I got the message saying so, you see a blue glow in the shape of a cross over on the black square where you originally got the keys. When all three glow blue you are ready to push the button.
Made it out of that chamber and onward through the different rooms.
With my cross discipline Ph.D in mushroom gathering and backing up while swinging, I emerge victoriously into the sunlight!!! Quite curiously, through fat fingering, I discovered the total pixie mage character I'm running is a beast at hand-to-hand with an attack speed that more than overcomes lack of damage.

Yay, he's back! [Image Can Not Be Found]
Edit: now how long do you think before he starts whining, "Where's the $#%& soap?"
(can't add smilies to an edit, hope you know there are some there albeit invisible)
Edit: Helmut, I swear, this next part is better than the mines but not *that* much. After you get out of this area, it is open & free. Before the soap he'll be facing the rats 'n' rocks. Will he persist? Persevere? 😀
Already bin there and dun that, ye Yap of so little faith. The mages are kaput and the gates open. Hills are too steep, giving me in-game vertigo, caves are too tight giving me in-game Doom 2 character radius chafe. (Can I fit through there, can I fit through there without snagging, can I back up through there swinging, etc.). I was somehow drawn to the helmet quest, as if.. as if..someone were calling my name.
I am a whiner though, and will probably uninstall in the morning.

Yap, you should have a quest marker for the Gevasius quest. I had one. Do you remember those steps going way up the side of the hill on your way to Treomar, not far from the ghost rider? That is where the beam is. It is a nice ride.
The baths in Erothin will also cure damaged attributes.
I am on the last bit of the Darius quest. It is a long one. I'm out for revenge. [Image Can Not Be Found]
Then I think I will buy a horse, though my little donkey has performed admirably. I want to ride fast.
Later...finished the Darius quest. He had a nice rune. I don't know what I will do next. Maybe the next Gervasius quest.
The baths at Erothin don't work and neither do potions of cure disease, restore endurance, and cure posion. I think it was a timed damage thing that got stuck. I'll have to reload a save from before I track down the undead in the Dariius Quest, replay it and watch it closely in case I encounter the Bane guy again.
Toni, I met him where you come to a locked gate N of Treomar and have to take the long way around to the E entrance. He is somewhere near the long steps going up to the glider. He rides slowly on his horse, not bothering you. He is kind of transparent.
Scout, that is strange. I am careful to check my attributes any time I think I might have been poisoned so I can reload if needed. I don't trust that a message will appear.
I got a horse but haven't taken him out yet. Maybe I'll ride up near Cahbeat to find the guy in the barrel.
......Found him and let him go.

Toni, my ghost rider was along the Dark Forest road with burned houses & it's dark & windy with torrential rain. (killing framerates) I didn't enter Treomar from the East. After finding the North gate locked, [Image Can Not Be Found] both times I've gone all the way around to the south entrance.
Pokey, I went up some long stairs leading to nothing but a nook with 2 baddies. Maybe now it's got a "slider." But maybe not, as I forgot that the northern tablet qiuest is still undone. Maybe I must do that first.
Haven't ridden my horse in awhile as it's so fast (relatively speaking) that my video card/24" monitor tend to choke & jerk keeping up with loading zones & changes. I opted (on that 2nd, looooong run back to Treomar) to put on speed enhancing gear instead. Never bought the donkey.
Helmut, I of all people appreciate a Champion Whiner as I am a practitioner myself. [Image Can Not Be Found] At "hills too steep" I was supporting you but "caves too tight" gave you away, Mr. Silly.
I ended the current siege at Cahbaet but instead of reporting the glad tidings to the Duke/Leader/? I ran away to do other quests. Not going to get roped into another 3 days of sequential quests before I finish tasks on *my* Do List. So there! you needy villagers!
Maybe the ghost rider is in different locations.
Yap, did you do the tablet at Treomar or do you have a marker for it? If you did, I think the glider will be there, though it is strange that you have no marker. The horse is not a lot faster than the donkey. There are a lot of loading zones in this game, making for jerkiness.

Yeah, Pokey, I did the tablet at Treomar. Note mentioned the "slider" but no additional quest marker. Not the first time a quest marker wasn't on the map then later appeared. Maybe it's there when I load tonight.
Darius, Darius, why must you try my patience? I *do* have the 3 markers for the 3 artifacts that require more running in 3 directions. If I could, would ride my horse it wouldn't be so tedious. [Image Can Not Be Found]
