Help! Scout! I need you to play this with me! Limited forum help in English, mostly tech, little on gameplay & quests. I need a playing companion. Especially someone who can figure out how to get the potion off the fisherman's cabin roof!   (and if that weren't enough !, here's some more !!!!!)

BTW, this is very very good. Cannot recommend enough. Not Oblivion. Having played Oblivion so recently, I recognize graphics & that is fun, to see how old bits have been recombined into a new world. Seems to have more heart & soul. But then, I'm not very far. And I can't reach that damned flask for a quest!

If you (or anyone) should decide to play, mine started crashing. What helped was turning off autosaves at rest, travel & especially @ every 10 min.

I'd be game. Since I don't have Oblivion loaded on my new system I will have to reinstall it. I have an old saved game on my "town closet" computer sitting in the office closet unplugged. I could moved the save into the new install I guess and then install the mod. Or just let the opening play and save when I come back from breakfast...

Hopefully this game isn't anything like Oblivion. I really liked Oblivion at the time I played it but man that game slips from memory quickly. I can barely remember anythhing about it.

Fabulous!  (!!)

Don't need a save, no lengthy intro, the game is completely new. I can't remember anything more than facing-fiddling & picking a name. Maybe picking a general build but I don't recall doing so, no need to decide on major/minor abilities/skills either. Face, name & go. Intro cutscene gets annoying, now I hit ESC to bypass.

After Oblivion install + latest official patch (easy to find), Nehrim install grabs whatever Oblivion files it needs & installs to a new directory. Oblivion install remains in Bethesda/Oblivion.

If you're running win7, readme recommended installing to c: rather than Program Files. I didn't but after the crashes began, I re-installed into C:. And turned off any autosaves.

There is a "Diary" in your inventory that has additional settings & level up stuff. I didn't know that until lvl 2.

I'm conflicted about which way to go – melee or magic, blade or bow. Bows are supposed to be so much better (by design) than Oblivion – that should please the Ranger in you. Me, I can never aim & shoot arrows before mobs are on top of me. [Image Can Not Be Found]

It's running fine but I'm wandering around in the mine. Going in circles. Not a very auspicious beginning. I finally gave up and cranked the gamma up so I can see what I'm doing...which is going in circles with the gamma cranked up. I'm sure I'm missing something. I'll look at  it again later when I have some time.

Hmmm, usually I wander in circles with no sense of direction. You're usually the one with the inner GPS. Something must be amiss or you're missing something. It seemed to me the mine was on rails, albeit wide open spaces type rails.  Something I remembered from Oblivion *after* this mine, but now am doing is look at the local map. Sometimes doors are marked & it helps to know in what general direction I'm supposed to be heading.

About the gamma….no lie. My gamma is cranked up to max at the lake & it's still dark. At home it's better but not great.

TMI: It's been such a problem that I ordered a new video card when the price was near-enough in price reduction so I could upgrade during this game (bringing home card to lake). Just arrived at lake with home-card and another power supply to see if that helps. Bottom line, I'm likewise feeling your blindness.

Let me try'n start another game from the beginning & see what I do. Or maybe I have an old save. Based on Oblivion saves that could be more than 8 mb, I usually keep only ~10 saves in my game (archive the rest & move 'em).

EDIT: hooray, found saves when I was lvl 1. Are you still lvl 1? I'll look at the map at that lvl. Ah wait….trolls! Normal trolls….and a BIG BLACK completely onpurpose unkillable TROLL. Heh heh, that's what you're gonna be facing. Then…. . The game *is* very much on rails at that point….

Yeah the big black troll is apparently unkillable. Boss battle on rails at the first level. Interesting descision by the mod maker. I can cross the on the gondola and guess I need to push a lever or hide or something on the other side though. I'm trying hard not to hate this right off the bat.

Nooo, don't quit. Not yet!

I had to look up a solution for the black troll after riding across on that stupid gondola too many times with saves every step of the way.

Trust your instincts and RUN!!! It may take a few tries but you'll eventually (w/ a couple of reloads) discover the safe room. Then you'll figure out what to do.  Believe me, coming from the world's worst wimp, you may have to hurry (doing what you gotta do) but I made it in one attempt. That means = it's dead easy.

After that, all trolls can be killed although there's one spot going up stairs with like waves & waves coming at you. If your gamma is high enough, you can see their outlines up ahead. I (literally) backed up, healed up (w/ my heal spell), and aggro'd as few as possible at a time. Very doable.

P.S. my slider is hugging the left side on Dead Easy although I'm not so sure the devs' Easy is my Easy.

P.P.S. I used the pick as a 2h weapon preferring 3 points of damage over a 2 point dagger. YMMV.

The gamma was working fine till I lost my torch and then it was just too dark. I am hoping once I get above ground to be able to center it again.

I'm not quitting. I'm just annoyed that the game is locked in like this right from the start. I expect (hope) it will open up but I don't get why they are throwing in this musty, old gameplay in like this. Anyway, enough bitching.

I haven't looked at the diary. Will have to check it out once I shake off the black troll.

This is not an easy game. I've died more times than any other game I've stuck with. Takes me a couple of deaths & reloads before I figure out how to stay alive. Sounds like how FPS games are played, not what I'm used to.

Right now my problem is multiple gamelocks-and-crashing. Guessing cause I always try to play with settings higher than my hardware is happy.

Blackness without torches will be an ongoing problem. Just bought my first 2 replacements. Before I was rationing out my last one a single peep, unequip....single peep, unequip. Mainly to uncover any loot hidden in dark corners.

Every time you guys talk about anything related to Oblivion, you make me want to play it again... I keep thinking if I look hard enough, I'll find what others (who I respect) found awesome. Is it me?

This Nehrim game does sound intriguing.

Ahhh. Finally got out of the mine and immediately had a tarantula on my tail. Big, hairy, green venom spitting spider…toger! [Image Can Not Be Found] Apparently you can't out run critters in this game so I finally had to face it down with my little toothpick of a dagger. What fun. I was running along a log sluice and the spider was chasing underneath it shooting green balls of poison. Most were easy enough to dodge. Found a merchant and unloaded all the clutter I picked up on the way out. It's much more fun now. As for combat difficulty, this being a German mod I expect more Gothic than Elder Scrolls, not a bad thing in my book.

The Oblivion look is nice and smooths over the rough edges nicely. Steerpike, it's free…you should give it a shot. That mine is really a pain in the ass though and not really showcasing much of anything. First impressions count and this was a bad one.

This makes me want to open up my ATI drivers and see if I can get anti aliasing and HDR working at the same time as I did with Oblivion.

Steerpike, always remember I never played Oblivion as Oblivion (although Scout did). My game was Yaplivion, modded to remove what I deemed hateful & to enhance up to graphical perfection.

I'm playing Nehrim as is, although I'm itching to add mods. Others are, but I'm going to tough it out vanilla.  [Image Can Not Be Found]

Scout, for the first time in a game, I'm picking up every lousy 1g cup & plate. And every stinkin' piece of rat meat (!). Training is pricey. Especially when I haven't decided which way to spec.

I'm interested in this game, especially since the Arcania demo didn't look much like Gothic. I hear it is German and plays somewhat like Gothic, so that pulls me in. Yappette, I just noticed the offer to download for me. Thanks, but we recently got new modem from our ISP (something about a new framework) and the speed is up 50%. Should take about 6 hrs---not bad. Luckily, I still have my Oblivion game.

Great Pokey. When you hopped into the Arcania demo, I figured that somehow your download speeds had impoved. You will love your new bandwidth sucking lifestyle. Said by someone with no phone (or cell) 2.5 days a week who pays $70/mo. for 4 weekends of broadband (and is grateful that it's even an option).

Well, I'm back in the mine doing the rats quest. I have to plug up some holes using the terrible Z key grab mode while rats bite my ankles. The devs seem to delight in making the player use the most clumsy parts of the Oblivion engine they can. They even brag about it at the beginning of the rats quest. I guess I'll go practice my awesome grab skills somewhere and try again.

Scout, this part almost made me give up. I had saves over three days. Three holes plugged (with leftover rocks), dead rats piled to my knees, and the quest would not complete. I knew the wrong rocks were in wrong holes but COULD NOT grab rocks to pull out. Remapped grab key - no difference.

OK, so I started the quest all over, entered the area and was promptly overwhelmed & killed. Reload and killed again. WTF?!?!?!? Knew what to do, knew location of holes, didn't know where to find rocks & rats kept coming.

Choices:

a. Keep trying to grab rocks out of holes.

b. Start over & risk certain death.

c. Quit game.

After 3 days of diddling, went w/ b) and rats manageable, I prevailed in one go.

SPOILER that will SAVE YOUR SANITY:

*

*

*

*

* While any rock may be shoved into a hole, to succeed the rock/block size description must match hole size description. But hole description text only goes across screen sometimes.

I installed Oblivion and patched it with the 1.2 patch from the Elder Scrolls site. When I try to install Nehrim, I get the message that I need the 1.2.0416. I checked and this seems to be a Shivering Isles patch. So, do I need this and can I patch over the other patch or do I start over?

Weird. I went back ready to have rats swarm me and there were hardly any. I plugged two holes and the quest complete screen came on. I saved and ran. Maybe I somehow plugged one hole and missed it?

Anyway, I finshed the soap quest which got me to wondering if you can hit dead ends in this mod. I can't remember if I picked up the items necessary for the quest beforehand or if access to them was shut off later though so I'll assume I'm wrong. Assuming I'm wrong is usually a pretty safe bet. [Image Can Not Be Found]

So it's back to the mine again to find something to prop up the gate. I like the outside quests in this game but I'm sorta burned out on dungeons. Not only in this game either. Lately I just look at cave/mine/dungeon doors in games and it makes me want to take a nap. I know it's easier on the devs to code little dark tunnels. Hopefully I'll be able to get through the gate and into the bigger game soon. I tried to find a way to jump over from above but the way is blocked by every devs friend...the-invisible-force-field-of-turn-your-cheating-ass-around-sucker. I will always love Gothic 2 if only because they let you actually climb over the end of the game world if you tried long enough. [Image Can Not Be Found]

That patch is seperate from the Shivering Isles expansion if you want to use it. But yeah,  pretty sure you need the latest patch....

Pokey, I installed Oblivion only, then the 1.2.0416 patch. No Shivering Isles.

Look here and although it says at the top this patch is for Shivering Isles, if you keep scrolling down it lists the same patch for Oblivion. I'd say be safe & uninstall/reinstall everything. Easy for me to say as I've done it twice now at both houses.

BTW, think I figured what may be crapping my game. When I insert the Oblivion disk, it autostarts....which I manually cancel....and the game says oh, can't find your card, we'll give you a default setting (640x480 and so on). Which goes into the active oblivion.ini that has my Nehrim settings. Over & over, each time I insert the disk, the .ini is being modified ever so slightly. [Image Can Not Be Found]
