I never used typhoon, though I had it available if all else failed. My main weapon early on was the tranq rifle. I dropped it midway in the game for another weapon. There were times I wished I still had it, but I was fine without it. My fully upgraded pistol worked out well along with a combat rifle. I picked up the stun gun later in the game and it was very useful. Hengsha was difficult to find my way around, especially getting to the different areas of the city.

Don't forget to check the Limb Clinic for praxis points. I missed it once.

Besides the fully upgraded Typhoon I have the tranq gun, the stun gun, a nearly upgraded pistol, a somewhat upgraded revolver and a stock issue combat rifle. Plus tons of ammo for all of it. I'm taking a completest route as I know I'll never play this game again. (Any game at this point. I'm sort of over replaying games.)

The game is a treasure trove of goodies if you are exploring every square inch. I have a lot of fun augs, like the Icarus Landing system, the enhanced Jump, tons of hacking levels and hacking stealth. Now I'm working on dermal armor and the double takedown. The devs really do a solid job of providing a non-lethal way to play the game. Reward it in fact. I was standing at the top of a five story elevator shaft and decided to test out my Icarus aug and jumped.

At the bottom of the shaft was a praxis kit. beerchug

Yeah, F2 for Typhoon. It's like having a SKIP button for boss fights. I so hate boss fights.

I picked this game up again after awhile.  I had left off just before going to Hengsha.  This game is so good.  It really picks up after you reach China, IMHO.

I'm about to confront Eliza.  I think I know what to expect, as the hints and foreshadowing have been pretty clear.  Blatant even.  But I've been wrong about these things before.  Can't wait to see what happens next.

Yep, I was right.  Now I'm back in Detroit and just finished the Radford side quest.  The plot thickens!

So now I'm back in Hengsha and have infiltrated the port and acquired Tong's "package".  Is there any way to save Malik?

Yes, I have done it. It might not be possible depending on your gear. It's been a while, but your approach has to be to take out the enemies who do the most damage first. I had a large number of mines and I think I emp'd the bots and gassed the heavy infantry while dodging and counter-sniping the snipers. You've got to really hit the heavies fast, but once you get down to just the light infantry, I think you're in the clear. Be careful not to grenade any undetonated mines, or likewise, deploy two mines, one of which explodes, too close together. I used to do that all the time.

Save her and she'll accompany you in a later mission.

Thanks Helmut.  I went back and read some previous posts that I had missed too.

Aw nuts, now I'm tempted to go back and save her.  When she said "get out now while you can", I thought "screw that".  I'd rather save her than that scientist.  But it seemed impossible.  I have a sillenced sniper (got that by somehow receiving a pre-order copy), the combat rifle, the 10mm pistol, and the stun gun.  I carry a modest number of grenades, mostly gas and EMP.  No mines typically.

I couldn't take out those heavies quickly enough I suppose.

Sorry, it's been some time since I played. IIRC, there's the walking bot that appears quickly. It takes an emp (or two), then there is either another bot, or at the very least some armoured dudes with the heavy machine guns. Both of these types of baddies will quickly blow up the chopper. I think the heavy infantry fall to gas in either mine or grenade form. I prefer mines since I was usually able to set them up prior to the excitement starting and don't have to hang around and throw them in exactly the right spot under fire.

It seems to me your package is a little light. I played through twice and the first time through, would have been equipped similarly, and failed to save her. The second time through I was playing with heavier gear. I wouldn't say it's very game changing. There's your own sense of satisfaction and a voice clip in a later mission, but there's no special reward that I know of.

I gave up on my idea of saving the pilot.  Just didn't want to redo Hengsha and Tong's lair.  Sorry Malik.

Did anyone notice the "Final Fantasy XXVII" poster in Singapore?  At this rate they'll barely get to XV by then.  Zing!

I beat Namir after several tries, without the benefit of my fully upgraded Typhoon.  Yeah.  So if you don't replace your biochip at the LIMB in Hengsha, do you get to actually use your abilities against him?

Now I'm in Panchaea and working my way down to disable Darrow's signal.  I had thought the crazed augs would be more dangerous, but they're almost comical instead.  I get the feeling I'm being set up for something much more threatening.  I've read some disturbing emails about the "girls".  Just what is this Hyron thing anyway?  Don't answer that.

Yes. But he's really fast (I didn't replace my biochip). I employed the help of a turret dragged down from the atrium and jammed in the elevator door.

I think you're my new hero.

I employed the completely not dishonorable tactic of whittling down his health ever so slightly, saving, repeat.

Finished.  Chose the Darrow message route because, you know, I'm all about the truth, baby.  I still think it's a worthy successor to the original, but the plot was not as good.  Or at least I remember the original having a better story.  A more complex one anyway.  All of the tie-ins to Specter's game (Bob Page, et. al.) were lost on me frankly.  It's just been too long and I'm not likely to revisit it.

I'll go back and check out the other endings, but I don't see myself re-playing the whole game.

I really have no desire to continue playing this game, unfortunately. It's probably going to be on my waiting list for some time. (Our waiting lists around here are like purgatory.)

What are your reasons Xtal?  Are you frustrated with all of the hand-holding after Dark Souls?

I suffer from the same malady. I dropped Stalker right before the end and I'm not begin drawn back to DE:HR after a month long break.  Endings are the worst part of most games. The only ending I ever stood up and applauded was Planescape: Torment. Fallout 2 had me sort of hopping in my seat.  Maybe games don't need third acts because they really don't have stories. That's not right. They DO have stories and if you want to see them you have to play the endgame but the experience is such that I don't feel bad about abandoning a game like I do a book or movie.  I don't NEED to see how it ends.

I'm not sure why my interest waned. Maybe during some holiday season downtime I'll get a second wind.

I don't think it's Dark Souls, either. I'm trying to keep in mind that not every (or any) game can be a Dark Souls. I'm almost on a week-long break from it anyway, like you.

Maybe it's Dishonored. Thinking about the two ... I prefer many things about Dishonored over Human Revolution, which is why I've been playing it for the last week and not HR.

Still, I know there's a good game in there somewhere, I've just hit a hole in the road. It's the same with Uncharted 2; I'm in the post-prologue mission and to my surprise (I loved the first Uncharted) I find it dreadfully boring. Just a bump in the road, no doubt, but it does have these games set aside for who knows how long.

I've stalled with HR because of the Guild Wars 2 Halloween events and the release of Guns of Icarus Online and Natural Selection 2. I'll be back on it as soon as I get a good long evening spare.

With Dark Souls I'm not sure what it is that's made me drift from it. I think I just got tired of struggling forwards. Guild Wars 2 is the exact spectrum opposite to Dark Souls; it's quick to pat you on the back and puts very few (if any) restrictions on what you can and can't do. If Dark Souls beats the player down with the heaviest object to hand then Guild Wars 2 pulls it to its bosom and offers milk and cookies. I suppose it spoiled me for long enough to make the prospect of returning to Dark Souls' brand of tough love more than a little off-putting. Don't get me wrong, I do love a good struggle and a hard won victory (losing is fun right?) but Dark Souls is so unrelenting and repetitive. To be honest, I'm amazed that you guys have played it as zealously as you have, and for as long! I've not fallen out with Dark Souls, I do intend to return, but when exactly I don't know.

Xtal, I often have trouble articulating why exactly I stop playing a game in the middle and don't pick it up for quite a while.  And it's not a rare thing for me.  Sometimes it's just an irregular schedule, but that's not the only or even main thing.  It's definitely harder for me to pick up something the longer I've been away.  There's that dread of not remembering what I was doing and, if I'm far enough along, the double dread of not wanting to start over.  The easy choice is to punt.

Having had a bit of time to reflect on DXHR, I have to say that it's a good game, but not really much more than that.  Technically it's perfectly well done.  And as these types of games go (we all know what that includes I gather) it acquits itself well enough.  While playing I was definitely interested in the story and seeing what would happen.  But...yeah, but something I don't quite know how to articulate was missing.  Maybe it's just the Souls games and that Saving Zelda essay have gotten me thinking how much more I may be enjoying games that don't go out of their way to guide you down the path.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the heck out of Uncharted, and while bits of Uncharted 2 weren't quite as charming (very small things mind you) it was an absolute blast.  Naughty Dog turned it up to 11 and hardly missed a beat.  What I mean is, I like games that are more accurately called interactive movies too.  But for something deeply satisfying on the other end of the spectrum, Dark Souls is tough to beat.  And I'm looking for more of the type.  I even downloaded the original Legend of Zelda on the Virtual Console just to see what it was like.  I can definitely appreciate what it does.  It basically gives you a sword, and says "I trust you to figure the rest out on your own."  It's very appealing.  And it's hard.  For all the love I shower on Wind Waker, that game goes out of its way to prevent you from dying.  Not so the original.  It will happily slaughter you in a heartbeat (no pun intended).

Gregg, I think the thing that's kept me going in Dark Souls is experimentation.  I really dig trying out different styles and trying to get better at PvP.  Also, helping out others against invaders never gets old.  But I'm with you on needing a respite.  I played through some of Heavy Rain recently and quite enjoyed the different approach.

All those things I said about DXHR getting it almost right, and all the great things I hear about Dishonored means I'll likely take the plunge soon.  I chose XCOM over Dishonored and am slightly regretting it, since the game seems so buggy.  And oh crap, I forgot I'm in the middle of Shalebridge Cradle as well.

OK, sorry for the wall o' text.

Botch, a game I've been meaning to take a look at for some time (although whether I'd stick with it is another matter!) is La Mulana. Joel from Electron Dance dabbled with it recently and from what I gather it graduated from the same school of imposed player-autonomy as Zelda and the Souls games. He linked to an article that takes a look at how the game introduces you to a few of its mechanics and conventions -- well worth a read, not least because it encapsulates many of the points that Tevis Thompson raises in Saving Zelda. Perhaps we should all start a playthrough together at some point in the future? I'd be up for it when my schedule permits :-S There's a free PC version available as well.
