Hmmm.  How about an oculus such as that in the Pantheon?  I'm thinking of an opening in a domed roof, especially in buildings of a religious nature.

Openings and religious buildings are both a lead, in two meanings of the word lead. The Romans lived in a different climate than more northerly western Europeans...

Great guess Scout. Thought you might know because the glass makers in the Rhine Valley circa 600AD were known as gaffers, which translates to "learned grandfather" and referred to the many years required for training and mastery. However, Jen has the answer. [Image Can Not Be Found]

The Romans didn't have a pressing need for glassed windows and never developed production beyond jewelry.

Nice question Finkbug.  I learned something interesting.  Or, 2 things, actually.

But a whale isn't a fish.    [Image Can Not Be Found]    We are smart here.   [Image Can Not Be Found]

New question later.  I'm hungry, but no caviar for me.

Thanks Jen.

This Date in Construction History

1.  Adaptive reuse through the ages.  537 AD.  This famous building in Istanbul was completed.  Part of its name means "wisdom"

    in Greek.

2.  Rock on!  1932 AD.  This famous building in NYC was completed.

To win you need only answer one of these 2 questions.  If someone gets them both right, then I'll find a nice virtual prize

for that person.

Jen wins with her guess of Hagia Sophia (Aya Sofya in Turkish), meaning "Holy Wisdom",  for the first question, Adaptive reuse through the ages .  The current building, completed in 537, is actually the 3rd building on the site - the 1st two being lost to fire.  Built as an Orthodox Basilica, it was a Catholic church for about 50 years, then a mosque, and is now a museum.   What fun wandering around inside it while playing Byzantine: The Betrayal.  A most beautiful building.

The answer to my 2nd question, Rock On!, is Radio City Music Hall. (Rockettes, but I know you got that.)  The Rockettes were organized in 1925 in St. Louis Missouri, then moved to NY to the Roxy Theater, and have performed at Radio City ever since its opening in 1932.

Nice question Spike! Trivia about the trivia: the Rockettes are chosen partly by height so they present a unified line in performance. Trivia about trivia about trivia: quite a few Vegas showgirls are transgender men.

For my first   [Image Can Not Be Found]   guess I'll go with the US.  Reasoning:  larger over-all population means that a small percentage can add up to millions.
