Things have been awfully quiet around here lately; so quiet in fact that if you listen carefully you can hear the muffled staff beatings being issued by our Overlord Steerpike deep within the bowels of the Tap-Repeatedly silo. It’s only right that I distract you from their disparaging (and hopefully short lived) whimperings with the sweet, sweet sound of music…
I’ll make no bones about it: w3sp’s videogame piano medleys are a pure delight. About three years ago the classically trained pianist managed to get himself into a studio (courtesy of Gamer-FM) and record a bunch of timeless tunes from Monkey Island, Final Fantasy, Super Mario, Zelda and Tetris. It really is worth taking the thirty minutes out to listen to these videos (part one and two), especially if you’re a fan of any of the above games. Nostalgia may never have sounded this good. You can hear more of his music here and if you do go over be sure to check out his Quake III videos, they’re incredible. In fact, sod it, here‘s a direct link to one.

Oh man, I just listened to these as I was working, and my heart practically melted. Childhood memories rushing by and the like. God I loved these games!
Great piano too. Anyone know when he recorded this?
Glad you enjoyed them Armand 😉 I always loved Holding My Thoughts in My Heart from Final Fantasy VII so I’m glad it’s amongst these tracks.
These videos were uploaded about three years ago shortly after being recorded. There are more medleys on his YouTube channel featuring more tracks from some of the games here, although they’re not as well recorded! The Monkey Island 1 and 2 medley is well worth checking out just for the metronome gag…
This is one of the reasons so love the Video Games Live concert. Great memories from childhood of half-recalled tunes and songs. I’m glad they’re turning up online!
I am not beating anyone. Punishment is limited to hot pokers and time in the Toger pen.
Listened to the first one this evening: even though I really have no personal memories of any of those games except for Monkey Island, it was all very lovely to me.
I’ll check the second part out tomorrow!
“Punishment is limited to…”
You said that last time.
