RIFT seems to be doing well of late and it just goes to show that producing and releasing a polished product, especially within online universes, goes a long way in pleasing a prospective player base. It’s no surprise then, that Trion Worlds have today announced two new programs designed to give gamers a free taste of the popular MMOG.
The first is a 7-day Free Trial which lets players experience the game for a full week at no cost, and the Ascend-a-Friend program that rewards current subscribers who find recruits for the Guardian and Defiant ranks. The new initiatives coincide with the debut of RIFT 1.2, the latest and most extensive game update so far. RIFT 1.2 adds several features, including Facebook integration, new 10-person raid content, and three new dynamic zone events.
The press release goes on to state:
“Since launching just over two months ago, RIFT has dramatically disrupted the online gaming landscape, giving players the most massive, dynamic, and engaging MMO experience currently available,” said Scott Hartsman, Executive Producer, RIFT. “With the Free Trial and Ascend-a-Friend programs, we’re opening the floodgates, inviting all into this amazing world to experience what gamers around the world already know – that Telara is the new destination for serious MMO players.”
By signing up at www.RIFTgame.com/freetrial, would-be RIFT players can quest, PvP, and battle back planar invasions free for a full week. Free Trial players can upgrade to the full game anytime, taking their newly-minted characters with them.
For anyone with large quantities of time wishing to dip their feet into an MMOG (not necessarily for the first time) you really can’t go far wrong with RIFT. It’s polished, has a brilliant class system and looks great, but be warned; you’ll need a bloody good PC to get the most from it.

All right….I downloaded this stupid thing and will try it just so I have something to say about it. I will not be an addict. I will note forake Uncharted 2 and Shogun 2 to grind out “just one more level.” I will not!
RIFT is a good MMOG and for anyone looking for one, they can’t go far wrong. It’s the most accomplished to come along in years.
From a personal standpoint I stopped playing at level 26 (having also sunk many hours into the BETA) as the game just failed to grip me. I’m unsure why, but it just didn’t in the way every other has.
I suppose some of it could be as a result of it not being truly original, or perhaps that Guild Wars 2 is just too enticing…
Either way the class system alone is worth a play through, the Marksman is a wonderful Soul! 🙂
Well, I’ve sunk about two hours into the game. It’s fun and addictive and looks and plays much like WoW. No innovation, really, but very sleek and refined. I like the tri-class system and I really feel like I’m customizing my character.
I don’t really see myself playing past the trial, especially since none of my friends play the game and I’m not particularly interested in joining a clan filled with people I don’t know and will never meet.
I love MMO and have been looking to see how RIFT was for a long time now. This trial period is the perfect time to test it.
However I doubt im going to stick playing with it, im currently very short on time (work and college) and I want to reserve my time for the release of the WoW sucessor.
Maybe it will take a long time, still, i trust in Blizzard =D
