At this years EVE Fanfest in Reykjavik, Iceland, CCP in their keynote speech have once again shared their ‘future vision’ of EVE. It’s impressive stuff, and the prospect of intertwining planetary combat in a massively multiplayer first person shooter (Dust 514 is CCP’s console shoot-em-up based on the EVE universe) that physically impacts on EVE Online is a bewildering technical feat, but something I still can’t see them pulling off.
I’ve put a little information on Dust 514 below, but the trailer really does the talking:
DUST 514 is an upcoming console-based MMOFPS set within the EVE universe, developed by CCP Games. It was announced on August 18, 2009 at the Game Developers Conference in Cologne, Germany and was introduced with a short trailer featuring unrendered footage of the game. This game will be the first game developed by CCP since Eve Online, and it is currently being developed by CCP’s Shanghai studio. According to Hilmar Veigar Petursson, the CEO of CCP Games, the game is being developed for the seventh generation of video game consoles (Xbox 360 and Playstation 3).The game features users fighting ground battles in wars on planets in the Eve Online universe
If CCP Games do achieve what seems the impossible of “one universe, one war” across two games and 3 gaming platforms, it truly will be a ground breaking achievement and one that resonates for years. Planetary and space combat, combined with space station hubs with controllable avatars? Yes please.

EVE is the ideal example of a small-ish MMO with a dedicate player base that keeps the developer flush with funds so they can try new things. I’m eager to see how they integrate Dust with the traditional space MMO they’ve got right now.
This sounds a lot like Clint Hocking’s ramblings on “convergence culture” come true. A feat, indeed.
I’ve always liked the look of EVE, although I’ve never played it. The spaceships always look cool, and I think they capture the feel of ‘space’ quite well. The FPS MMO here looks good too.
Shame I’m trying not to spend money on MMO’s ever again 😉
It just sucks that CCP sorta failed with captain quarters. Its been months since Incarna has been released, and we are JUST getting the other 3 quarters. It’s a good “vision”, but I doubt we will get there any time soon.
