"…seems to me that short of a crash/freeze/etc. when 1st starting the game after mod installation it might be tough to know if there are incompatibilities. "

Yes and no. An unhappily modded game will usually crash before it loads, as it's loading, as soon as loaded & you move a step. Or, it can crash later after you do whatever it (secretly) dislikes.

For example, there is an Oblivion mod I am desperate to play but when it was installed, every. single. damned. time. I entered a certain city the game crashed. I approached that city (in which I had to do quests) by sea, land and air (teleport). Crash! Crash! Crash! Finally I had to concede defeat & uninstall as I could never find anyone reporting problems such as I had.

Now that I've finished the main quest & past a certain point in the endgame, I have reinstalled the mod. Unfortunately I must spend some ingame hours before the mod kicks in (sends me a messenger) and I haven't yet done that. I will though. The fact that the mod works fine for others and not me drives me stubbornly onward.

I will be interested to read about your 6-mods-at-once experience.

Seeing as you've never once loaded a single mod successfully. [Image Can Not Be Found]

Edit: didn't notice it on your list but you might want to (strongly) consider the Unofficial Patch. Don't know what it's called but I know there is one. Also, this thread on Quarter to Three has some load orders that work if you're willing to wade through 13 pages starting back in 2008.

Oh, gee, thanks for the Quarter to Three info, Yapette.  I found a terrific mod:  Color Hi-Detailed Map and Icons which adds more terrain textures to the PipBoy map and adds color-coded icons to pinpoint potentially dangerous places, metro stations, populated places, pre-war structures, sewer and land places, and undiscovered places if you have such.

Of course I also found a couple of load order lists which is what I went there for, and which I've copied.  Now on to Arwen's for more info.  I'll probably get around to playing this modded game along about Labor Day.   [Image Can Not Be Found]  Either that or I'll get so impatient that I'll start loading mods and just see what happens.

Also going after the Unofficial Patch since the concensus is that it fixed a bunch of glitches/errors in the pre-modded game.  That would be good.

Your first 5 mods are by someone named Puce Moose? Wonder if it's the same guy that posts at GamerswithJobs from time to time. I think he even posted here once. It's not a name I'm likely to forget.

Other than that, the entire modding thing makes my head spin. That's all I had to offer. [Image Can Not Be Found]

I know.  When I saw the name I remembered it from somewhere, and since this is my only online home-away-from-home, I assume I saw him here.  His mods sound really interesting and many others like them.  If they work well I will PM him and thank him and suggest he come back here from time to time.  Everybody should have a Puce Moose.

Some time ago when I first started reading about the modding adventures of Yap and I think a couple of others, I wondered why they were taking so much time fussing with the game – reading, modding, tweaking, and so little time playing.  Now I get it and I owe them all an apology for thinking of them as procrastinators.  Mind you, they might BE procrastinators, but I'm just sayin'.  Sorry people.

As for me, there comes a time when I have to quit reading-learning and start doing-learning.  I thought that would be tonight, but I found myself reading yet more pages about the process and finding a handful of new mods to download as well as a few new utilities.    I swear, there have been many times in the last week when I thought:  "Screw it.  I'm just gonna install them all and let the chips fall where they may."  My smarter half didn't let me do that, but I'm still tempted.   Tomorrow, tomorrow…. barf.

Damn it all to hell.  I found a great tutorial, attemtpted to post about it with links.  Hit save and got "maximum number of links exceeded" or something like that.  2 links?  I'm going to bed.

I can probably fix that, sorry Spike - it's likely an anti-spam effort.

I distinctly recall a moose that was puce visiting us once back when we were FFC. I can't remember what the thread was about, but as Toger pointed out, puce mooses are so rare these days that you tend to remember the ones you encounter.

You're making me want to reinstall Fallout 3 and get all these mods!

Spike, all your pre-study will not come to naught. Even though what you read may not make total sense without having first done any actual process. What your dutiful preparation will do is when an issue (read: problem) arises, you will vaguely recall having read something…somewhere… about something similar.

Without prep, you'd be at a total loss instead of merely going mad searching for that previously read somewhere reference. [Image Can Not Be Found]

Plez, post tutorial link. I can never have too much knowledge.

This is a 4-part video modding tutorial.  About 40 minutes total.  The clearest info I've found yet.  I'll post the link to each of the 4 parts in a separately to avoid the Overseer.  I didn't have time to watch more than a few minutes last night, but will do later.  Watch it in full-screen so you can see just what he's doing.

I had no idea there would be so many - thousands.  The Nexus site is fantastic.  Thankfully, they list mods by category, otherwise I'd be slogging through all those thousands looking for what I want.  And that's only on the Nexus site.  Other sites have 'em too.  There is a mod for anything you can think of that you'd like different in the game.  Too, lots of story/quest mods.  Lots of something for everyone.  Fire up that game, Steerpike.  Why should I (and Yap when she finally recovers from her "Analysis Paralysis") have all the fun, and some of the hair-pulling joy, playing a modded FO3?

I just finished watching the series of 4 YouTube FO3 mod videos I link to above for the second time.  I took notes as I went.  Acannova made the process sound so much easier than all the loads of other stuff I read.  His simple "this is what we are going to do; this is why; this is how; this is where" explanations were very clear.  I learned stuff I hadn't known form my other reading, for example, once modded, FO3 must be started from the FOMM (Fallout Mods Manager) in order for the mods to work.  There were lots of other "ah-ha" moments.

I'm not going to use any of the mods Acannova used in the videos, but the process will be the same, and that's what I needed.  I hope I have time to spend a couple of hours actually installing the already-downloaded and organized mods and utilities this weekend.  I am itching to start playing again.  I'll probably watch the series again as I move through the actual install process.

If I can understand this stuff, anyone can.  I assume that each mod-able game has a mod manager, and that the process will be about the same for each.  So watching this video series can help anyone modding any mod-able game.

Hmm, I think I read somewhere that there are Half-Life 2 mods, and of course there are many Oblivion mods....    [Image Can Not Be Found]

"...a couple of hours actually installing..." [Image Can Not Be Found] The process took me days! Install, works great, install, crash, back-up, reinstall & reorder, works great, install....

Agreed, those videos are a gold mine of information. So far, I have watched only Part 1. My only complaint (in that I see a potential problem for newbies) is his (apparent) ease at click this! and that! and then over to this! In reality, muuuuch slower accompanied by muuuuch deliberation. At least for me.

No, games that can be modded do not come with mod managers. Player Timeslip is the one to whom we send prayers of thanks. It is he who wrote (and maintains) these wonders for Oblivion & Fallout 3.

And yes, a desktop shortcut to the mod manager launcher is how you'll start the game. You'd have found that out as you learned (via readme, instructions) to use FOMM 'cause there's no other way to test if your mods/load order is working.

Good Luck! [Image Can Not Be Found]

I was reading this and wondering why I am not seeing the links Spike posted as real links. There seems to be an n_ missing and replaced by dots, so I can't copy and paste.

But, but…I'm choosing to be optimistic!  I watched the series twice, pausing to take notes, pausing to look at what he was selecting/clicking.  I'm just keeping my fingers crossed, is all.  [Image Can Not Be Found]

Pokey, I'll give the URL again, this time either typing the whole thing or cutting and pasting, which is not what I did the first time.  I'll have to do one in each post since the forum gods don't like multiple links.  Let me know if this works.

Here's #1:

Ok, so that didn't work.  Will try again.

Video #1:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v....._ix-dOGfXs

I don't get it.  Even when I type the whole thing in by hand, no cut & paste or highlight/move from the address bar, the whole address fails to show up in my post.

Try this:  here is the URL for Acannova's YouTube page.  The 4 videos are listed in the right-hand column.

http://www.youtube.com/user/acannova

Alternately, you can search (on YouTube) for "Install Guide for Fallout 3 mods Part 1/4",  "Install Guide for Fallout 3 mods Part 2/4",  "Install Guide for Fallout 3 mods Part 3/4",  and  "Install Guide for Fallout 3 mods Part 4/4".
