I dipped my toe into the end game of New Vegas - but as I don't have any of the expansions with which to keep playing, I'll have to go back to previous saves.

The end battles and stuff were all pretty cool, I think it's a great touch to show your accomplishments throughout the game at the game's conclusion.  Helps create a strong sense of ownership and accomplishment (of course).

The ending was a bit too ramshackle for my taste but I still agree with you, Jarrod, it was nice to see different pockets of the story wrapping up somewhat. A lot of people detested that about New Vegas. But then, how many games truly end exactly as we hope they will?

The endgame itself ... tragically bugged in too many places, but I appreciate what they were trying to do. My favourite Obsidian ending is still the annoyingly-, (almost gleefully- among its haters) misunderstood Knights of the Old Republic II. The ending to end all dreams of people who like comprehensible endings!

They're good points, xtal and Scout - I don't know what game I've played has had the most fitting end... but certainly showing accomplishments, and how they've affected PCs, lets me believe that the game world continues on, even if I don't participate.  Endings are definitely the icing on the cake.

I've reached The Strip. Can't enter it yet though. I either need 2,000 credits or a passport. Think I have 1,500 credits but need to generate some more.

I'm assuming this is the games not so subtle prod to say "Hey, go and do some sidequests first!". Should I, or am I OK to sell 500 credit's worth of scrap and cups and proceed right on in there?

I'm not sure, I never did enter the strip before my computer died. The idea of being surrounded by rich bastards just offended me. As much as revenge is an appealing concept, I was doing so much more good and having so much fun exploring the wasteland, righting wrongs and discovering pre-war history. I think I was meant to be an action-archaeologist.

I wish STALKER had more like this - rich historic content, stories written into the world. It all felt a bit.. timeless, in the Zone. I didn't get the feeling anything exciting had happened since the events - the world had only rotted and crumbled, without any interesting marks left by past Stalker endeavors.

Mat, there's no particular reason you shouldn't sell that cache of glow-in-the-dark shower caps you are hoarding and gain entrance to the big city. One of the brilliant strokes of New Vegas was the juxtaposition of a single metropolitan hub, New Vegas, against the sprawling wasteland. One big city surrounded by…. not city.  I enjoying hopping back and forth from the two. The contrast made the game for me. That and the well-written characters.  I took my time getting there though and don't remember if I had a passport or so many caps at that point it didn't matter. Pony up and go make a night of it.

Yeah, no need to sell if you don't want to...  and there's still plenty to do before you even go into the Strip if you want.

If you do end up paying to get in, then you won't miss out on much - you can go back and do other stuff later if you want.  2000 bottle caps was too rich for me (not really, I was just stingy), so I found another way to get in.

Just had my first moment of real frustration with the game.

Red Rock Canyon. My GOD that's an absolute bitch to get to. For a starters, it took me ages to work out where the entrance was. Then it took me a further god knows how long to actually get to it. Every avenue I tried was sending me into brick walls. Those huge flying bugs on one side, Deathclaws on the other, loads of Fiends in camps just outside.. argh. I eventually had to spam a couple of Stealthboy's and hope they didn't conk out on me in the middle of Deathclaw territory.

Took me the best part of an hour and a half and countless deaths and swearing to get to the Great Khans. Then as soon as I did the option to return to Yes Man appeared so immidietly fast travelled my ass right out of there. So much frustration for what was literally about a minute's stay in their camp.

Feel like I can start enjoying the game again now that's over with.

Yep,  getting into Red Rock canyons to the Great Khans is a major effort.  But now that you can fast travel out of there,  you must be able to fact travel in again.   Give it a try and walk around and talk to some people.   You might find some things you can to and gain another perspective on those you already know.

Careful about fast traveling back and forth into known Deathclaw territory, Mat. I can't remember if it was Red Rock or not but I once materialized into the middle of a group of about 6 pissed off Deathclaws. THAT was an adrenaline rush!

It seems like a few of you don't know this little tidbit about entry to the Strip, but it doesn't cost a cap.

It's labeled misleadingly in the dialogue, but all the robot guy does is a "credit check." He just looks in your inventory to see if you have 2,000 caps, and if you do you get in. They don't take any of your money.

After abandoning my second play-through back in January I've picked it up again, full steam. I could play this game forever. A "stupid" character in New Vegas isn't as good as one in the first Fallout, but it's still pretty great some of the dialogue options you have with extremely low intelligence.

As well, I forgot how much it makes me laugh... fucking Fantastic, the "idiot with the sunglasses" in HELIOS One ... I love that guy.

"They asked me how well I understood theoretical physics. I said I had a theoretical degree in physics. They said welcome aboard."

Priceless.

One of the things I've enjoyed about NV is how funny it is.

Yes Man is consistently laugh out loud funny. His voice alone is brilliant.

I've hit a wall.

Legate. My speech or barter skills are nowhere near strong enough to get past him. In a fight, it's impossible to win. I have Veronica and a securitron bot with me. They die pretty quickly and I'm left to take out Legate and the rest of the Legion goons myself, a task which I'm calling right now as being impossible as my character stands right now.

I'm incredibly frustrated right now and not sure what to do. I've got a save from just before you start the final mission but.. I don't know where I'm going to get any significant XP boosts to give me any decent skills to beat him.

I just.. argh. I don't know what to do. I suspect I might be fucked and might have to restart with another character, knowing what I know about the game now and focusing on different things. Like I can be arsed with that though. Unless there's a magic method for me to progress to the finish line with my current character I need to take a serious break from this game and start again another time.

So pissed off.

How close are you on the speech checks, Mat? If you chew every possible intelligence gaining chem/food you have (mentats, etc.) and read any +10 magazines before you hit the Legate would that get you where you need to be?

If that fails … does someone in your party just have a missile launcher?

Personally I forget how I defeated Lanius. I'm pretty sure my speech was at 95 or something, so I probably talked him to death, as you've clearly intended to.

The loving Fallout community here must be able to find a way to get you past that final hump; it'd be a shame if you ended up stuck right at the end.

Much better to be stuck at the beginning of something. Preferably paralyzed, in fact. By… by a crab. A motherfuckingCRABSDLKJH!*(UFJSDJ*@U*YU$@RHWFCU(W*H(*W(NM!*E$&#*$W*FJUISDH@#@#$U(@#$JQWDIOWJD*(JAZDNM!

Is he the dude with the funky helmet at the end?  That was a tough fight - I did it on the default difficulty.  If memory serves, he talks to you on a pathway that is right near a ledge (which you can use to your advantage).

Otherwise, if you didn't want to start again, maybe you could purchase one of the DLCs, and go run through that to go up some levels?  I was already at lvl 30 when I took him on.  I found different Legion camps, snuck in and killed everyone, then onto the next.  Other areas where I'd killed a lot of Fiends had re-spawned, so I went back to those and took them out too.  All the exp adds up, especially if you go after the leaders of the Fiends (but don't explode their heads!).

OK, so I did it.  I completed the game.

How? By knocking the game down to Very Easy. I spammed the whole area with my machine grenade launcher (<3) and in the ensuing chaos at some point everyone in the area died apart from me. Brilliant.

I do however now feel like a massive chump, so after watching the end credits roll the first thing I did was restart a new save and build my new character. This time, I'm going to take it slow.. which I'm going to have to anyway as I want to incorporate all the DLC into this save but want to wait and see if they crop up in a sale again (yes, yes.. I know). I'm going to do as many side quests as possible instead of blasting heads off first and I'm going to right some of the wrongs from my previous game.

Also, Steam has laughably underestimated my game time during this game. For some reason it knocked a chunk of time off my counter the other day and has me around 15 hours short of what I've actually clocked in..

What level did you finish the game at, Mat? I was maxed out at level 30, so while I remember the Legate being tough, he was not impossible on the default difficulty, so I'm guessing from the sound of your last two posts you were not quite 30?

My brother got me Honest Hearts for my birthday a few months ago, and this thread has prompted me to add the other two to my cart. Once more into the Mojave Wasteland!
