This week Joel and I are the men who stare at goats. And barley. And clay, and bowls, and beer and various other things related to Studio Wumpus’ Sumer.
Quick heads-up: I think this is one of the best episodes of Side by Side.
You might recognise ‘wumpus’ from M.U.L.E., which is a good start because Sumer is indeed a M.U.L.E.-like. First an Archon-like, now a M.U.L.E.-like! What ancient bloodline shall we explore the ends of next?
Sumer is a curious experience because it’s a digital boardgame with some of the twitchier elements of a more traditional local multiplayer videogame so it’s uniquely cerebral and frantic. It’s a bridge between two worlds and my hope is that it will appeal to both boardgamers and videogamers–provided you can gather up a group for it who are willing to learn and engage with its mechanics. That will be Sumer‘s biggest challenge. It’s currently in Early Access with local multiplayer only but, thankfully, an online mode is being added which should help the game spread its wings.

As always, a huge thanks to Joel Goodwin for his continued efforts putting these videos together.
