TWO F'N WEEKS, PEOPLE!

Two weeks from tonight, I will be sweating bullets as I make my final packing adjustments. I'm anal and afraid I'll forget something so I have a habit of packing in dribs n' drabs over the course of several weeks. I've got piles and bags o' stuff I'm planning to take sitting in a spare room with my suitcase (and tres chic carryon).

I've made copious use of "there's an app for that:"

  • packing lists - brilliant in the extreme as it made me consider things I hadn't thought of before like having copies of my passport in case I lose it (actually, the travel agent has them just for this purpose);
  • Tripit for all my itineraries so I'm not sorting through stacks of paper (we're staying overnight in NY in both directions to avoid spending 12+ hours trapped in a flying metal tube);
  • free Wi-fi finder;
  • couple of language apps;
  • a conversion app that converts money, weights, measures, etc;
  • and my absolute favorite, Trip Journal which is just what it says. It's adorable (important [Image Can Not Be Found]) in that the app looks like a journal Indiana Jones would use. I can track my trip with waypoints and include pix, video, notes about what I've seen, etc. I've been playing with it for about three weeks to get used to using it as it's not quite as intuitive as it could be, but I've figured out the majority of it. I can tweet my location and post to Facebook from it. The only downside to the facebook linkage is it requires a Trip Journal app that wants to use my info even if I'm not using the app. Uh, no.

I was just telling Yap that I'm still trying to find suitable clothes to take. Guess I better step it up unless I plan on wearing the exact same outfit the entire 10 days. That simply won't do. Oddly enough, I do have plenty of shoes. [Image Can Not Be Found]

While I, the consummate Luddite, make do* with a pencil & paper as I plan my trip 4 weeks hence.

* "make do" until I can buy a tablet running Android (better than 2.2) on a cpu > 1 GHz with a memory card slot, usb ports, capable of flash & wifi, priced < than $500. Or I convince son #1 it's not a waste of his time to both get Nook Colors (@ $249 ea) so he can cover my back while I root it & install Android half a continent away (from him).

Phffft to 12 hrs. in a metal tube. That's a *short* flight. (I kid, I kid)

Houston–>LAX= 2 hrs. 46 min.

+ 5 hrs. layover

LAX–>Bangkok = 16 hrs. 33 min.

+ 8 hrs. layover

Bangkok–>Denpasar, Bali = 3 hrs. 43 min.

Bali is my favorite place ever, but getting there = total & complete exhaustion

I knew you'd call me on that 12+ hours in a metal tube, Yap. [Image Can Not Be Found]

I would so love to go to Bali, Australia and other points "down under" but the flight times would make me lose what little I have left of my mind.

Bali is my dream trip but the lack of funds, long flight, and mostly heat once there making me miserable scratches it out. [hits play on the gamelan playlist and swoons]

How long will you be there, Toger? I'm sure you mentioned somewhere earlier in this thread but I'm lazy.

I'm at D(epart) -23 &  I'm getting anxious. Today I sorted clothes & gear into tentative take piles. Turkey is cold now: 30s - 40s. For me, that is dead of winter in a cold snap.

How in hell does one do a countdown anyway? If I'm leaving on March 24 and today is March 1, then it's X - ?.

This asked by someone who lives in Houston & might kind of should know. But doesn't as I've never watched a lift-off. Televised, as Johnson Space Center/Houston is mission control not a launch pad.

And to answer the unasked, yes it is hard to live with a mind that thinks so tangentially. As well as talking like that. Some find it impossible to follow. Their loss. [Image Can Not Be Found]

I'll officially be there 10 days; however, I've added one day each to the front and back ends to spend in NYC. To sleep. [Image Can Not Be Found]

We leave the 11th and don't touch down back at SFO until the 23rd.

7 days. [Image Can Not Be Found]

In one week, at this particular moment in time, I will be making my final check through the house to be sure I haven't forgotten anything, zipping up my suitcase(s) and heading to the airport.

Having lived overseas at various times starting in high school, I still have daymares about forgetting* something vital . My dear departed Dad used to remind me that there are stores in places other than my home town and "foreigners" also shop for necessities.

My rule of comfort: if my suitcase is lost forever (or even two days), could I replace enough to get by for minimal cost? India, Thailand, China, Indonesia, countries with cheap exports the answer is yes. In Central London, Paris or Rome, not so easily. YMMV.

In fact, my favorite places to tourist are department & groceries stores (not often small shops as usually a merchant-helper follows you every second watching like a hawk for some sign of interest in anything). Price matching, looking at what is eaten & worn & used in daily living. Others may frequent pubs 'n' bars, bistros & restaurants, I prefer to conduct consumer research.

Cannot wait for your AAR. [Image Can Not Be Found]

* My husband who has lived mostly overseas since second grade (!), once forgot to pack underwear & socks. And FYI, twenty+ yrs of marital harmony = never sharing suitcases or computers.

Actually Paris has a whole street dedicated to second hand clothing, or did the last time I was there though I can't remember where it is now. Store after store of beautiful clothes cast off by Parisians after a single season for a fraction of the price. I bought a nice car coat in one and pants and shirts. I ended up leaving the stuff I had brought from home behind in the hotel room as I only had a single bag. Most of the younger people there buy from fea markets and such. Those scary, high priced places have insane prices.

I like wandering the local stores too, Yapette. Look for store packed with locals, go in and check out what they are buying. Also works for pubs and restaurants.

Oh, I know if I forget something, I can easily replace it. As my parents would say, "it's not like I'm leaving the country."

Oh, wait. I am. [Image Can Not Be Found]

And yes, there are stores in other countries. [Image Can Not Be Found]

The stores can be very different. When In Germany in the late 80s, my husband got hungry for a bowl of cold cereal. We were staying in pensions that served coffee, hard rolls, cheese, and if you were lucky, a boiled egg. The coffee was great. I liked it, but he was used to cereal, so we went looking for a grocery store. The selections were very few. The cereal shelf was about 6 ft long with about half a dozen choices. Not what we are used to. We did find corn flakes, so he was happy. The pharmacies are very small and quaint as well.

We've been to the lovely parts of Germany, Austria and Switzerland and well as England and Scotland, but Italy is the one country I would love to visit.

OMG, there's a wayward aspostrophe in my last post! This simply cannot stand! Can you fix it for me, Steerpike? Pretty please? [Image Can Not Be Found]

Yeah, Pokey. I'm hoping to avoid the necessity of buying something forgotten and instead concentrate on "Ooo, that looks so very cool and I've never seen it at home. I simply must  buy it!"

In other news: I don't think I've ever taken this amount of crap for a trip. I'll need my own personal Sherpa to carry it all. Spent some time today cutting all the tags off the new stuff that I bought (I needed new clothes, anyway). At this moment in time, I'm glad I allowed myself to be talked into not doing a "if it's Tuesday, this must be Belgium" type of trip. The constant packing/unpacking would have been too much to bear.

As Yap pointed out, I could easily wear some things several times as I won't see the majority of the people on this tour ever again... Except for the part where I'm a klutz & always spilling stuff on myself. Here's hoping there are laundry facilities in the hotel or little Italian women willing to thrash my clothes against rocks.

Loving every word of your Prep Reports. [Image Can Not Be Found] Been there. Done that. With buckets of uncertainty & anxiety.

My trips are 1 & 2 nights in one place, rarely 3. Now I pack by categories (tops, bottoms, underwear, etc) in zippered mesh bags (for doing laundry) from the $1 store. My travel partner uses gallon ziplock freezer bags but I find them too slippery & they puff up w/ air. We drag bags from suitcases….plop 'em back in. Previously, my suitcase was a tangled mess within days of landing.

You have discovered a Travel Truism: core necessities (let's call them accoutrements of daily living) are the same whether you're away for a week or away for a month. Luggage for short trips can seem ridiculously voluminous.  Trust me, longer trips require only a few more clothes (ratio of X days : X cubic luggage changes dramatically).

Yeah, I'm using the expensive equivalent of ziplock freezer bags. I have several and it usually cuts down on wrinkles and discovering wadded-up balls of fabric in the bottom of my suitcase. I did have to buy a larger piece of luggage as everything I already own is geared towards 1-2 days worth of stuff. Even going to Bolivar for 10 days only involved a smallish carry-on as I spent the entire time in a bathing suit or shorts. This time, I've got a 25-in spinner. I'm pretty sure I can hide a body in it.

This morning, I started gathering up stuff I can "pack" (more like throw into a bag on the floor to be well & truly packed later this week) now like vitamins, lotions, unguents, ointments, etc and discovered that kind of crap takes up way more room than I thought. (damn, it's tough being a girl! [Image Can Not Be Found]) I've been able to find some things in travel sizes, but others not so much. Do I really want to drag along that enormous glass bottle of fish oil capsules or do I just toss the dosage needed X # of days into a baggie and hope airport security doesn't pitch a fit?

I figure by the time I'm actually packing my bag on Wednesday & Thursday, I'll have thrown back at least a quarter of the stuff I thought I couldn't do without.

Grazie, grazie!

My plan is to tweet/facebook at least one photo per day (international roaming è molto costoso). The rest of the pix will have to wait until I'm back and can dump them to my photobucket account.
