because of some chatter here about "heavy rain" i'm finally ready to take the plunge but don't have a clue as to which PS3 i should buy...

i don't need much as i don't think i'll have it connected to the internet because of my "download threshold" enforced by hughes satellite... sometimes it sucks to live out here in the puckerbrush! LOL!

i welcome any and all advice! thanks 🙂

Senne, go with the PS3 "slim" - this is the most common one. $295, 160GB, built in wireless. It's what I have. You might want to also buy yourself an HDMI cable, just to ensure the very best possible picture.

As for games, you've got an embarrassment of riches to choose from: Heavy Rain, Demon's Souls, Valkyria Chronicles, and both Uncharteds are must haves.

Enjoy!

If you do get an HDMI cord don't pay the "robber" prices most places charges. You can get a good HDMI cable online at Monoprice. I get all my cables from them.

As above. HDMI either works or it doesn't; there is NO difference between a $1 cable or a $100 one. I suspect the companies (such as Monster) who charged top dollar for HDMI during the early days of it's adoption were trying to cash in those people who paid big money for gold plated Scart adapters and whatnot. Hit up Amazon or wherever and find the cheapest one - you're good to go.

As for the PS3, I've always bought the lower end models and never had a problem (although I would have exceeded my launch 40gb by now had I kept it!). I've currently got a 120gb Slim model with plenty of room left. I've got a few custom soundtracks, around 15 demos, 9 full games and a couple of mandatory installs on there with plenty of room to spare. Unless you plan on whacking all your music on there, plus photos, demos and full games, you should be fine with the base unit.

As for games, you've entered the PS3 at the right time. There's 5 years worth of great games to catch up on (well, 4 years.. man, that first year.. eugh), so you absolutely need to get your hands on some of those.

Congrats, Sennebec! [Image Can Not Be Found]

We're trying to organize a podcast on Heavy Rain, maybe you'll be able to join us.

Well done, great job on the HDMI cable! I got a pair for my 360/PS3 and it cost me $8. It's unbelievable what they'll charge for, say a Rocketfish cable, in a Best Buy-type place...

Gotta be someone's April Fool's joke.  Or that's a sham web site.  Just in case, I checked to see if I got a whole slew of odd cookies, but no, all was well.

update... would you believe i just received my shiny new PS3 yesterday afternoon?
it seems like a year since i ordered the freakin' thing! and it's not all amazon's fault...
(btw... i've never had a problem with amazon's free shipping)
it's also our glorious united states postal service... bah 🙁
once amazon processed my order (june 9... 5 days after i pressed the "confirm order" button) my greatly anticipated gift to myself departed springfield, mass en route to maine (june 10)... all of a 4 hour drive away...
the dented box finally arrived at my post office june 22!
too tired from landscape work, i've yet to unpack it and see if it even survived it's postal experience.
it is now close to 4 am... cannot sleep... watching impending rain on the satellite and methinks i just might take today off to set 'er up...
i'm a-hopin' and a-prayin' that nothing is broken!

Let's hope it works out, Sennebec. Amazon's good with returns too, but it would suck to go through it when you're excited to play your new PS3!

What I would suggest as far as games go really is just one series: the Uncharted games.  They're the only ones I've played I really loved.  Others I've started, said "eh" to, and then pitched back onto a pile.

Oh wait!  And Demon's Souls!  I learned how to use a controller playing that game!

I'm jealous you live in Searsmont.  Maine is my favorite place in the whole world.  If I ever could find a law job up there...

It's a nice area too---kind of between Belfast and Camden?

The Uncharted games are great. I am having fun with Prince of Persia 2008 right now. Another that I really liked and was surprised that I did since I have never played a driving game, is Burnout Paradise. It is fun with another person to compete against, sharing the controller. I have a couple others that I started and should get back to. I intend to play Demon's Souls and Heavy Rain soon.
