1. I loved...LOVED...Portal when I played it in the spring.
2. My son, the Very Infrequent Gamer, had not heard of it before I played it, and was probably bored silly hearing me talk about it. Then said son came south this weekend, and I convinced him to try Portal. "Just play a level or 2 and see what you think." Three hours later I announced that lunch was ready. Son comes in; I ask how he's doing and what level is he on. Just reached the beginning of LEVEL 18, he says!! Damned kids. He's off to play golf with his dad now, but he insisted that he would finish before bedtime, and further, that he is now looking forward to Portal 2. Damned kids! I feel like such an incompetent slacker. But...there's hope for me...

I watched my nephew do that one day. He went up a couple of levels just sitting at on the couch waiting for lunch.
I've tred to get into Portal at least 4 times and it has just never stuck. I think I'm missing a gene.

I checked my elapsed playing time for Portal on Steam. I had about 24 hours of my own play time. My son has now finished the game, and the elapsed time is now just a bit short of 30 hours. I watched him play much of level 18 and all of 19. I was amazed at how quickly he saw his way to solutions - including the final one with Gladys (as I've been calling her). *&#$!+ kids.
But I'm gonna think about those mods. Most of them look to be new test chambers. Maybe others mod other aspects of the game, but I don't have any interest in going backwards. New chambers might be fun.

If you haven't done, and crave another playthrough, definitely try the Developers Commentary. It's really interesting. And the voice of GLaDOS has some comments. She sounds very sweet and grandmotherly. Actually she is sort of sweet and grandmotherly, as this interview suggests.
I don't mind when actors say they don't play games, only when they act like their doing gaming a favor by lending their voices.

Apparently Spike the Bethesda Portal levels are devilishly difficult, I'm yet to play them myself though. They might be a nice challenge for your son 😉
