This being the season of unbridled drinking it's occurred to me that some games are more fun to play when drinking than others. For instance, Fallout: New Vegas REALLY lended itself to this type of gaming. It seems perfectly acceptable to crawl around in the dirt with a rusty ass old gun and fire off pot shot at various mutated mammals and be none the worse for it come morning. Though it was always interesting to fire up the game over morning coffee and see just where I had been…and what I had done.

Now Mass Effect 2 just doesn't work that way for me. I've tried to play it after a few glasses of wine and with all the faux digital read outs and persnickety controls and tunnels and no where to run to and 500 pop up info bits to digest it's more of an am coffee game for me which means I have having a hell of a time getting started. I keep my morning mind clear for RL stuff and only hop over to gaming when I'm ready to party. But so far Mass Effect 2 is like trying to assemble an Ikea workstation on Christmas morning with 300 parts laid out in front of you. It's fidgety. It's got too many moving parts and just when you think it's time to blast away all the characters move into Shakespearean mode and want to discourse when I just want to blow away some stupid robots.

Maybe I need to wait for the cold, clear light of January before trying this game. Right now it feels like work. But this being Bioware I shouldn't be surprised that all the characters feel a need to talk about their feelings.

This is very true, Scout. Some games, including New Vegas, Mount & Blade, and all the UFO: After(etc) titles, are quite a bit of fun (in the case of UFO it's actually better) through the amber-colored goggles of drunkenness.

Gregg may opine that Left 4 Dead should not be included in this list, since I'd had a couple glasses of wine during yesterday's game and I did shoot him in the ass - by accident - and then Steam crashed so I vanished inexplicably with scarcely a chance to apologize for the ass-shooting. However, I have found that provided your friends are forgiving, L4D is also a great one for under the influence play.

Mass Effect 2 is probably more a cold light of January type game. You'll spend a good amount of time blasting robots, fear not, but you'll also discuss. And discuss. And discuss. And at one point, even have a song sung at you. It takes a certain type of mood to get into it. Moreover, unlike the zany and devil-may-care New Vegas, it's important to remember what you said, and to whom.

Life is the misery we endure between disappointments.

I have a difficult time mixing gaming and drinking. For some reason, the minute I get drunk, I loose all interest in gaming. Been like this for years.

Now, having a smoke before playing some video games... nudge nudge...

Don't worry about dropping out of the game Steerpike, it was fun having you along while it lasted. I'm sure Gregg will give you a heads up next time we're gonna play.

Also, the part in Mass Effect 2 that involved singing was possibly my favorite part of the game. Cemented the singer as my favorite character in the game as well!

Maybe we should add prefixes to reviews. D for reviewing while drinking. S for reviewed while smoking.

I also did well with the Gothics, Fallouts, and Elder Scroll games while drinking. Now that I remember finally got enough Mass Effect 1 under my belt where I could have a belt but never too much. I wonder if the more open gameplay lends itself to altered states gaming. Being able to turn and run away is always a plus I suppose. I did just fine drinking wine and playing Nehrim too. (But I have to be straight to play Angry Birds.) Again it comes down to games that let you pretend you have skills and games that require you have skills. I was a mess if I tried to play Guild Wars after a drink. Ditto for what I could finish of Psychonauts. With Daggerfall, on the other hand, it was mandatory to drink. What else was there to do while you spent twenty minutes trying to find your way back out of the dungeon because you forgot to drop a Mark at the entrance?

D, S, N, AA, NA...

If I've seriously tied one on it's spamming flak fire at bots in UT2 until nap-nap time. No aiming required.
