Peeps! It's been a while. I'm still here but haven't checked in on the site in quite some time.
Who is playing or will be playing Elden Ring? I still don't have a PS5, so I'm waiting for that. I have a pretty solid PC but it's a laptop and not really set up for 4k. I've tried to ignore all news and info, but I do see that it's getting stellar reviews. Pretty hyped but having to temper my enthusiasm. Looks like the semiconductor shortage is nowhere near over.
Rule #2: Double-tap
Botch! Good to hear your virtual voice. I've been playing Elden Ring since it came out. It runs quite well on PC even on barely in-spec PCs, but I can see waiting for the PS5, which I imagine is the game's natural habitat.
I've been slow playing due to other stuff going on that's a lot less fun, but what I have played is magnificent. It's a vast, sweeping, beautiful world so packed with stuff to do you're bound to miss things, but never feel as though you have. Mechanically it plays basically like your Souls games, though elements like mounted combat change the experience a lot. You'll be very pleased with it.
Once I get re-situated after real-world crap I'll post a note about my progress and we'll see if we can get some other players chatting.
Life is the misery we endure between disappointments.
As Steerpike saw when he checked into my Extra-Life stream last weekend, I've been plugging away at Elden Ring for months and finally finished off the end boss this past weekend.
Whoooowheeee
No way to succinctly talk about Elden Ring, but high level views..
Amazing, amazing, incredible game. FromSoftware ... incredible.
"Hey should we try to make an open world game or whatever?"
"Sure sounds good."
"Should we make it better than all the other garbage ones that exist?"
"Yeah I guess so."
And so they did. Oh. My. God. Throw away all your garbage. Throw away your Assassin's Creeds. Did you buy them digitally? Buy them physically, just so you can throw them away. Oh my goodness. Barf!
Just incredible open world design. The best I've played in the five years since Breath of the Wild. Similar ethos, the "ooh what's that over there" type of exploration.
No small thing either, this is easily the most accessible FromSoftware Souls-era game.
The negatives? The game is so absurdly large and too long (like almost every Souls game) to the point it becomes comical. There comes a point in Elden Ring where you realize, oh shit, they already made the sequel to this game as well, and they just slapped it onto this game. The character with whom I finished the game would tell you I played the game for about 250 hours. About 50-75 of those hours are probably just me leaving my Xbox idling, but I did easily spend over 150 hours on that single run. Now, I sought out everything I could, went to every corner of the map and fought every boss I could find. But still...the madness!
Hope y'all have been enjoying it as well.
