Thanks to whomever pimped Bits 'n' Bytes, our friend Armand's home, a little while ago on the forums here. I've been doing a lot of reading there since. I thought the following article was worth linking to for any of you who don't often (or ever) venture over there.
http://bnbgaming.com/2011/03/0.....the-score/
In it the editors of BnB (Armand K's presence is lacking- how come?) discuss their thoughts on attaching a numerical score to game reviews, and ultimately note that they're abandoning this format, leaving their words to convey a message that an arbitrary number fails to.
It's a good read.
If being wrong's a crime I'm serving forever
I'll take a glance.
Metacritic does all the numerical aggregation we need. Numbers are good for narrowing down the ones you've any interest in examining more deeply – when I read a review, I want words.
Edit: Narrgh. Without naming the name, one of their reviewers puts me in mind of a seven year old writing 'what I did on my holidays', except without the sense. By choosing to publish his reviews they give a nasty impression of the site as a whole =<
Main article is a decent point, but one I think most thoughtful GJs are coming to discover for themselves or learn from the likes of RPS. Numerical scoring is going out of fashion already.
I don't generally approve of doing anything to encourage Armand, but you really can't go wrong with BnB or this thoughtful article. We've wrestled with the same thing here at Tap, and I was involved in many a discussion back when I worked in print about whether to retain numerical scores or not. Every argument in that debate makes sense, but instead of muddying things further it helps flesh out various reasons why (or why not) a site/magazine would make such a move.
Personallly, in general, I'd rather people read the thousands of words writers put into a review. God, look how hard Lewis worked on the Rift review. To glance at the Thumb Up and leave it at that is to do him, the game, and yourself a disservice. At the same time, though, there is something to be said for that triumphant stamp of a number - like Armand's own joyous 9/10 for Bulletstorm, or former FFC writer Denice Cook's equally joyous 0/10 in CGW Magazine for Dungeon Lords.
Life is the misery we endure between disappointments.
