The Steam version of the game makes use of Steam’s new ability to
sync game saves with The Cloud. The idea itself is sound: your local
game saves are mirrored on Steam’s remote servers, so if anything should
happen to your hard drive, your game saves will always be safe and
sound on Valve’s big fluffy Cloud.

That’s when it works, of course.

And of course it ain't workin' too good - so far.   A buggy game.  Steam messing up saves.  I think I'm gonna wait for next summer and the GOTY,  by which time I hope all the bugs will be worked out, I can get the add-ons at the same time, and save a bit of money in the process.

It is interesting that as much as we all hate Ubi's DRM, there are many among us (including me!) who tend to give Steam a free pass. I like the idea of cloud saving, but I also like the idea of not having to if I don't want to.

Maybe there really is no such thing as privacy.

Update: Steam Cloud has been turned off for New Vegas until further notice due to the problems it was causing. Just in case anyone was interested.

Funny how experiences change one's viewpoint. I just suffered three major hard drive crashes in a row - the first due to carelessness, the second due to stupidity, and the third through no fault of my own.

As a result I lost all my New Vegas saves and have to start over from the beginning, which - knowing me - is highly unlikely.

Steam can sync my saves any day it wants.

Crap, Steerpike. That just sucks. It's so discouraging to lose all your saves. (Looks at my Win 7 machine with weekly backup to exterior hardrive currently in progress as I type and pats it's flat little head.)

I hope Steam gets it together to make some kind of future backup availble on an opt out basis. Personally I like the idea. Since I started using Dropbox to back up my writing and pics me be big fan of cloud idea. Maybe I should add my save game file to the bin.

I love Dropbox. It's a must-have for anybody who uses more than one computer. As for opt-out of Steam Cloud, I can definitely get behind that. No one who doesn't want to be synced should have to be.

Unfortunately the first of those three crashes was my external backup system. I use Mozy for business stuff, so all that's safe, but my main gaming PC has gone through some serious meltdowns recently. Nothing's been working!

Drop Box is wonderful.  I never thought about it for game saves, but that's an excellent idea.

Yeah and the free version is pretty generous: 2GB (unless it's grown since I looked last) would be enough for almost 10% of your Fallout 3 saves, Spike.  [Image Can Not Be Found]

I've got Dropbox on my desktop, laptop and iPhone.
