ACK![Image Can Not Be Found]

I feel for you babe.

Our wireless is holding up, which is good because we don't have enough calbles for our cable.

Our probelm is simply that our computers suck.

It's terrible to have all your business stuff on a hard drive that croakes.

AND that's happend TWICE!!

The business computer is a stripped down dell laptop that was a free give-away because of H.'s mother's frequent flyer miles.

We CLEARLY need a new plan.

We have exactly one. Wish we had more options.

We can take an old computer some Mac person gave us because it's PC and they hate PC, and use it exclusively as a business computer and .... tell me folks, is this a good idea?... set it to automatically back up once a week.

What do you do Jen.  Your lively hood like ours depends on a reliable computer.

Is more than one hard drive the key?[Image Can Not Be Found]

Anyone else out there a professional who wishes they were a geek and could make all the right decisions?

Hope you can go one with landlines, Jen.

I never thought you realized how important and unique your work is.

I just mean it's undervalued.

Oh Jen... [Image Can Not Be Found]

Yeah, I can hook my computer directly to the cable modem and get internet that way. Sucks for the rest of the house, though. No Netflix downloads on my bedroom TV, no internet for my chilluns... we have a lot(!) of wifi devices. I've gotta get a new router, but I dread it. The setup always confuses the crap out of me.

I have more than one hard drive, which I copy my work files to when I think of it, which might as well be never for all it ever actually happens. I have not had a hard drive failure in years, though, and if my computer kicks the bucket I just pull out the old drive and put it in the new computer and copy files directly from it. That's harder to do on a laptop.

We had to turn our hard drive in to professionals once.  Probalble did nothing that we could have done oursleves, if we knew how.

By the time we got it back, all the outdated stuff was too old to really worry about.  H. just keeps on with the current stuff and that seems to work until a client gets crazy. [Image Can Not Be Found]

Lost in the Digital World.

As good as Lost in Atlantis, anyhow. [Image Can Not Be Found]

I got a new router last night, and everything works so much better now. I guess my last one had been on its last legs for a while now. I always blame it on Comcast! Unfairly, maybe, as it turns out, but it makes me feel better [Image Can Not Be Found] the bastards!

Those bastards ruined your wireless router! [Image Can Not Be Found] All those filtered torrent packets arriving too slowly clearly made the device overheat.

You could try an external hard drive you back up to nightly/weekly.

You could also pay money for one of those guaranteed online backup companies.  My problem with them though is that they are pricey and require a dedicated connection to your computer.  They can login any time they want.  Can't see why they would, but it still irks me.

You could go old school and burn backup discs, but that might get expensive too.

And next time you or anyone else here needs PC technical support, consider an online free tech site.  I am an admin at one and a moderator at others that are good.  One in particular is http://www.suggestafix.com.  They can help you for free or tell you if you should get a local tech.

And avoid Best Buy Geek Squad.  They are trained to tell you your HD is shot so you'll buy a new one from them and let them put it in.  They don't look at your PC for free and charge you to recover data even when they cannot recover a darn thing.  Local, small business computer shops are a dying breed, but if you can find one you can usually find them run by a guy/gal that loves computers and wants to see you happily reunited with yours asap.

Too bad you're not around Chitown.  I'd have looked at the broken down HD for you. 🙂
