#3 is The Last of Us, of course.

#4 is a Star Wars game, clearly...hard to tell which one from some purple lightsabers alone.  Broadly I'd guess either The Old Republic or possibly Jedi Academy if it's older.

#5 I've seen on Steam!  It's...it's...Reus, maybe?  Something like that.  With an 'R'

#6 is obviously some kind of period thing.  I'm gonna take a wild guess and assume it's from The Bureau: X-COM Declassified.  Could be LA Noire, but I don't think so.

#7 is killing me.  Like, literally killing me.  I know I've played this game.  I think.  I know I think I have.

Side note: so is the last one's #8 a thing titled "Drunken Robot Pornography" or is it just generically pornography with drunken robots?  Because that's probably a thing.

Started playing The Last of Us last night. So yeah, that's the Last of Us.

Haven't played any Star Wars games since Rebel Assault, Tie Fighter and Dark Forces so I wouldn't know which one that could be!

Dix is right, it's Reus!

It just came to me! Omerta: City of Gangsters?

That last one is... you know I know this Steerpike, so I'm going to keep quiet and let Dix squirm a bit more.

Nope, not Omerta. Actually it's going to be a nightmare to guess unless you know what it is. I'm meanspirited. Have to throw in a few tough ones or you guys will get all soft, like pudding.

I don't recognize the last one at all.  It's #7 (the spacey thing) that's driving me insane.  Can I just list all the spacey games I can think of?  It's probably one of them!

If I had to render a more selective guess, right at this moment, I'd be leaning toward Freelancer.  But I may yet have an epiphany.

You can, but you'd be roundly mocked - nay, ridiculed - for your scattershot approach.

The others wouldn't mock you, I would mock you. That's right, the mockery you fear the most!

Between this and the Tapcast thread, you seem to be downright adversarial these days, Steerpike.  Is it all that Crusader Kings II you've been playing?  (I don't know why it would be, it's just what I've seen you doing on Steam.)

Well, I did have to have one of my own sons assassinated to make room for his younger brother. Kid was crazy. It was the first wife, you know how it was in Medieval times. It's made me unusually Machiavellian! I'm going to try ruling through fear for a while, see how it goes. You know. There'll be a questionnaire to fill out in a week or so. "How fearful are you," things like that. Sort of a rule-by-fear best practices.

TapHeader_017.jpgImage Enlarger

This one was pretty tough. The advent of TinEye and Google Image Search forces me to rather extreme lengths to thwart you guys. The one up there now should be a little easier, though not necessarily from a Google Won't Help You perspective. Some will pop right up if you run them. It's a balance.

Last month (and a half)'s:

  1. Michael Cimino's Heaven's Gate - Scout could tell this story better than I.  This 1980 western is still one of the most expensive movies ever made (a $44 million budget adjusted to Today Dollars is around $150M), and one of the biggest box office failures ever.  Cimino could write his ticket after The Deer Hunter, but it turned out he only had two good movies in him (the other was Thunderbolt & Lightfoot) His behavior on set - demanding upwards of 50 takes, reconstructing whole sets - put Heaven's Gate over budget and behind schedule on day one. Its failure caused the collapse of United Artists and essentially ended Cimino's career, though he did rematerialize to direct Year of the Dragon in the mid eighties.
  2. Sentinels of the Multiverse, a cute board/card game that's good to break out if no one feels like setting up Arkham Horror
  3. The Last of Us (and there I thought it was hard to make out, you guys got that one in about ten minutes)
  4. Knights of the Old Republic 2
  5. Reus, a neat indie game which, interestingly, just came up in some other forum conversation
  6. Frozen State, a failed Kickstarter from Russia - this was one of those that was almost impossible to get, unless you backed it like me. It looked pretty cool, but couldn't get the Kickstarter traction it needed.
  7. Sins of a Solar Empire, which I despised because it sucked
  8. Here's an interesting one. That's Articy:Draft Professional, a really-quite-robust piece of game development helperware. It's one of the few that actually is built with game developers in mind, offering game-specific storyboarding, script tools, asset management, and so forth. I don't know if anyone actually uses it, but I appreciate the effort on their part.
  9. Sacrifice, because at the time Gregg had just reviewed it

As for this month's, the first three should be obvious. #4 is no picnic, though, so call the first three freebies. The latter five... I think they're pretty easy, but I've been wrong before.

Enjoy!

I forgot about the banner contest!

Okay so:

  1. Don't know. Beyond Good & Evil or Wildstar or Starcraft or Halo or something?
  2. Postbox.
  3. Don't know.
  4. Looks very familiar. Don't know.
  5. Could be any space game for all I know. Endless Space? Gal Civ? Sins? Kerbal Space Program? No real idea. Hang on, it is Kerbal Space Program!
  6. Pacific Rim.
  7. No idea.
  8. Logitech Setpoint software.
  9. No idea.

1. Destiny

4. Gives me sort of a Dear Esther vibe, but I know that isn't it

6. Pacific Rim

7. Feel like I've seen this somewhere...

9. Oregon TrailCuster's Revenge?  I dunno, it's a snake.

Oh, also, it turns out I hadn't played last time's #7 after all.  At a certain point space games all blur together if they aren't, like, Freespace.

Damn, I nearly said Destiny but a quick Google search didn't turn up anything that looked like that pic! I was close with Halo! ;-)

It's not Destiny. Or Halo! You guys are on the right general track though.

That last one is in fact a snake. Depending on when your childhood was, you'll have vivid memories of that snake.

It looks super super familiar and it's driving me nuts.

If #1 isn't Destiny I'm not sure what it is.  It reminds me of some of the Reaper attacks in Mass Effect 3, but I think they all had legs.

It's old-skool. That snake will cause different reactions in people depending on the nature of their exposure to the game in question. The mere sight of that snake has been known to drive men mad. Others have no reaction to it at all.

It's a rattlesnake. Though that has nothing to do with it.

I'm wracking my brain for what #1 might be.  I'm pretty sure it's not one of the Resistance games.  It could be Killzone something or other, but I haven't played any of those since the original, so I have no idea what their stuff looks like anymore.

You will find that I am rarely wrong, Steerpike!  Verily, perhaps never, dare I say.
