I just recently picked up the Uncharted Dual Pack (that's Uncharted Drake's Fortune and Among Thieves) and have now completed both games (as a proud budget gamer I'm always behind the times).
The first word that comes to mind about Among Thieves is "Wow." I thought Drake's Fortune was very good, but Among Thieves takes to a completely different level. As I was playing through the earlier chapters I remembered how much more praise 2 garnered than 1 and I thought to myself "What's the big deal? It's not that different." Then I kept playing. And playing. The sheer volume of awesomeness that Naughty Dog packed into one disk just blows my mind.
The game contains so many varied and gorgeous locations, and so many exhilarating set pieces. I don't know if I can overstate my admiration of ND's accomplishment. Having not played Drake's Deception, I don't know how or if they can top it.
I understand the criticism by some that Uncharted has too much action movie and not enough game. But after playing, I can only reply, "yes, and?" As Amanda mentioned in her excellent article recently, Uncharted does what it does very well. It's just so fun, who cares if some of it is "fake hard?" I went along for the ride. It made me want to go along for the ride. And boy what a ride it was.
Usually with these kinds of games, after the initial play-through I'm done (and honestly, I rarely play games more than once). But I could easily (and probably will) enjoy another go. It's just that good.
Rule #2: Double-tap
The first Uncharted was a nice surprise when I bought my PS3. I bought Among Thieves when the price dropped but I still haven't played it, aside from a brief dance with the multiplayer. You just need to be in the right mood (not too heady) to enjoy these games, like many other shoot-fests, really. I pretend I'm interacting in an Indiana Jones story, but instead of a scholar and a gentleman the protagonist is a wise-ass and a jerk.
edit: Okay, come to think of it, Indy's not really a gentleman, but he wears a hat.
If being wrong's a crime I'm serving forever
Thanks Steerpike. I'll pick up 3 eventually I'm sure. Even if it doesn't top 2, it should still be a great ride.
xtal, I agree, it helps to be in the right mood for this type of game, but I guess that's true in general. It's not a big stretch from "Let's watch Raiders!" (the best action movie of all time, there I said it) to "I think I'll give Uncharted a go."
My wife usually enjoys watching me play cinematic-styled games (God of War is another example, III is in my backlog) but for whatever reason she doesn't care for Uncharted.
Oh, and the Nepalese sure must use a lot of propane.
